Utilize a variety of genre-relevant details. 1. Further develop the character. 2. Further develop the setting. 3. Add onomatopoeia words. 4. Add number details to be specific. 5. Add name details using proper nouns. 6. Add action to dialogue. 7. Add alliteration. 8. Add vivid action verbs. 9. Add prepositional phrases. 10. Add a repeating line to create drama. 11. Add sensory details. 12. Add comparisons. 13. Add personification. 14. Add slow-motion moments. 15. Add character thought-shots. 16. Add details in threes. Use an appropriate beginning/ introduction. 1. Introduce the main character(s). 2. Establish the mood or feeling. 3. Propose an intriguing question. 4. Describe the opening scene or setting. 5. Dive into pivotal dialogue. 6. Engage the reader with onomatopoeia. 7. Identify the story s point of view. Use an appropriate ending/conclusion. 1. Reveal how things look within a setting ending. 2. 8 6-Traits Integration: Bringing it all Together THE PLANNING PROCESS: Part 1 Part 1 Part We identify the mother-load units we are going to teach (e.g., narrative, expository, persuasive, drawing, labeling, listing). We identify the traits (umbrellas) and mini-lesson skills (spokes) we are going to teach within the mother-load units. We organize the traits & skills into a priority order teaching them within multiple mini-units. Parts 3 & 4 Part 2 Parts 1 & During the mini-unit, we teach mini-lessons based on the skills we identified. These minilessons go across multiple days giving kids time to Notice & Name it! and Try it! When instruction hits the Apply it! level, then the skills are added to the growing rubric of expectations. After teaching each of the skills for this mini-unit, assign a piece to be written and assess it for the traits taught. REPEAT FOR THE NEXT UNIT. 8
