Adherence to agreed technical standards Solutions are always designed with reuse and other teams development in mind. 2. Purpose & scope of the role 2.1 Purpose of the role: To sit on department design authority to enable the development of extensible, scalable and robust applications and operations that meets the business s objectives, whilst delivering the target architecture. To ensure that all designed solutions satisfy business requirements. Produce architectural designs in a well-structured manner to facilitate ease of development, testing, and support. Deliverables will be compliant with departmental standards and / or working practices. To develop spike solutions of complex functionality as templates for further development to take place. Mentoring of development staff in completing the solutions to fully-fledged applications where directed. To champion and continuously improve the standards, processes and practices within the department. Promote the use of best of breed architectural solutions for individual applications based on agreement with the Enterprise Architect. 2.2 Scope of the role: Based in Peterborough providing solution architecture and design services to Ctm. 2.3 FSA Classification: Not in scope Page 1 of 5

Key Result Areas Key Result Areas (KRAS) Activities within the KRA (including frequency) Development, Planning and Implementation To develop projects ranging from small to enterprise-wide, ensuring adherence to quality and technical standards Develop detailed application architectures and designs to standards and processes to support the future requirements and scale of Ctm Ensure features are prioritised appropriately, estimates are reliable; benefits can be realised; design activities are pro-actively monitored / tracked to meet planned timescales Proactively assist the Project Managers in their development schedules to specify and scope their delivery commitments Manage architectural problems and issues arising from projects, escalating issues as necessary Solutions Architecture Develop and maintain IT s target application architecture and coding best practices and continually re-evaluate the appropriateness of existing programming techniques and open and closed source tools in light of emerging trends so that a baseline of best practice exists. System Support Service Levels Delivery Communication People Management & Development Act as the primary project Design Authority using modelling techniques to understand the complexity of the business s requirements and design the architecture to meet these requirements, whilst delivering the target architecture. To document the designed architecture and ensure that this is agreed by relevant IT stakeholders. Collaborate with relevant project stakeholders to identify and where appropriate escalate Key Design Decisions (KDDs) that could compromise the delivery of the business s requirements or the target IT architecture. Ensure that the application design incorporates both functional and non-functional elements that result in extensible, scalable and robust components and applications. Control the design of the application components and interfaces ensuring that regular code reviews and refactoring occurs so that the envisaged architecture is actually delivered. At all times look for opportunities for reuse. Assist in the support of systems utilised by assigned areas of the business, ensuring the timely resolution of problems arising Ensure the design and architecture service provided by the team is in accordance with the agreed service levels between the functions within IT systems and the business. Ensure Intermediated Businesses deliverables are delivered to a high quality, to time and meet the agreed requirements Ensure effective communication and cooperation with other IT (and Business) managers and department to resolve problems / issues and further enhance the IT development services provided to the business. To contribute to appraising, coaching and developing team members Business Management Identify how business requirements can be met through application software and define the required application components including third-party software, common components and bespoke code to inform the decision regarding whether to buy, build or re-use. General Undertake activities in line with department standards and / or working practices Contribute to the ongoing improvement of the adopted working practices, standards and process within the department with a view to improving both efficiency and quality Page 2 of 5

Awareness of the groups policies and procedures and the regulations relevant to the role. Experience of creating Technical Architecture Definition documents and architecture diagrams that provide a graphical view of the major system components and the relationships between them.
