Today s Agenda Discuss math content, language, and teaching methods that are being used in classrooms today Explore hands-on math activities Discuss games and activities to do at home to support mathematical thinking
Stages of Learning

By the end of each year students should be able to: 1 st grade 2 nd grade Be fluent in numbers to 10. Able to read, write, count, and compare numbers up to 1,000 Add and subtract within 20 using various efficient strategies. Add and subtract tens or ones to a 2-digit number using manipulatives, pictures and strategies based on place value. Add and subtract within 1,000 using various efficient strategies. Fluently add and subtract within 20; know from memory all sums of two one-digit numbers For detailed standards, go to:
Successful mathematicians are Accurate- ability to produce accurate answers. Efficient- choose an appropriate strategy for specific problems. Flexible- the ability to use number relationships with ease
Your children will further develop their understanding of numbers. What is seven? 7
Thinking about numbers What is 7? Words After/One more than Numbers Before/one less than away from ten = 10 2 more than
Number Bonds- Decomposing numbers Number bonds help students see that numbers can be "broken" into pieces to make computation easier. Children experience multiple ways to compose and decompose numbers. The part/part/whole mat and concrete practice are used a LOT! This helps little ones really understand how addition and subtraction are related.
Decomposing numbers
We talk a lot about the number ten. Why is ten so important? Turn and talk at your tables.
The All Important Ten 1st graders begin learning their basic addition facts and apply that knowledge in a strategy known as "make a ten. This helps make sense of facts that might otherwise be hard to memorize, such as or Students decompose one of the addends to make a ten from the other. In the example pictured below, the 4 is decomposed (split) into 3 and 1. The 3 is combined with the 7 to make 10, and then the 1 is added for 11.
The All Important Ten Addition Concrete Pictorial Ten Frames
The All Important Ten Addition Abstract Number Bonds
Understanding Place Value Truly understanding place value requires students to be able to unitize. They must be able to understand that a group of ten ones can be counted as a single unit, called a ten. Students need lots of varied handson experiences building tens and ones and talking about the meaning to develop a true understanding. Students should manipulate materials, such as linking cubes, bundled straws, beans in small cups, etc., so they can build a ten and then break it back into ones.
Place Value Across Grades 1st grade - Compare two two-digit numbers based on meanings of the tens and ones digits, recording the results of comparisons with the symbols >, =, and <. 2nd grade - Compare two three-digit numbers based on meanings of the hundreds, tens, and ones digits, recording the results of comparisons with the symbols >, =, and <. 4th grade - Compare two multi-digit numbers based on meanings of the digits in each place, recording the results of comparisons with the symbols >, =, and <.

The All Important Ten Subtraction Concrete Abstract 12-8 Ten Frame Number Bonds = = 4
The All Important Ten Subtraction Semi-Abstract Abstract = = 4
The All Important Ten again! = = 87 OR = = 87 What makes sense to you?
Let s Try A Few! Think about: What s the math? What strategies are likely to be used? What questions would you ask?
Putting it All Together Close attention given to the value of each digit within a number Focus on explaining thinking Goal: to understand why the algorithm works The GOAL is FLEXIBILITY!
It s the Questions That Drive Mathematics Encourage your child to explain his or her thinking Express wonder and amazement at what they are figuring out - Can you show me how you got that answer? - How do you know? Can you show me? - Interesting Can you prove it? - Do you think that strategy will always work? - What do you think it would look like if we put it on paper?
Let s Play! All you need Top-It (old-school War) single numbers, addition, subtraction, multiplication, doubles 10s Go Fish Close to 20, 50, 100, 1,000 Domino compare, addition, subtraction Train Game roll, build, compare, count

Bringing Math Into Our Children s Worlds Turn an ordinary walk around town into a mathematical experience Use existing passions to springboard into a mathematical conversation. Encourage your child to take risks it s okay to make a mistake and struggle!
