1 Institute Purpose and Overview The Emerging Educational Administrator Institute (EEAI) is designed for experienced faculty aspiring to be administrators or those who are in their first administrative position. It is a threephase program that combines online and in-person activities to provide experienced nurses greater opportunities to gain leadership skills and put them into practice in an effort to advance excellence in nursing education. Phase 1: Online Coursework Phase 2: Multi-day Workshop in Indianapolis Phase 3: Project Implementation with Mentor The areas of skill development include: planning for and getting an administrative position, curricular/accreditation expertise, setting the vision and strategic plan, being an effective leader, building an effective team, finding balance, influencing change, transforming/shaping the organization, being a good partner, communication and conflict management, financial expertise, legal aspects of education, understanding politics and advocacy, and leaving a legacy. Goals/Objectives: Participants will be able to: 1. Create an administrative career path; 2. Develop knowledge and skills related to the administrator role in academe; 3. Select and/or demonstrate appropriate administrative skills in selected scenarios; 4. Create and initiate a personal plan to achieve administrative goals; 5. Apply best practices to administrative actions, decisions, and communications; 6. Evaluate administrative performance by self and others in selected scenarios; 7. Develop as an administrator in one of three academic missions (education, research or service); 8. Identify strengths in areas where Scholars can role model and/or mentor others. Applicant Criteria: The EEAI is designed for experienced full-time faculty members with at least six (6) or more years experience as a faculty member, and who are either aspiring to become an administrator (level coordinator, program coordinator/director, assistant/associate dean/director, or chair/director/dean) or are in their first administrative position for less than three (3) years. How should I select potential mentors? Scholars should select a total of three possible mentors who have the qualifications and experience necessary to support their goals. The mentors should be individuals who can provide guidance and feedback in a manner that allows the Scholar to grow in his or her leadership capacity. It is also important that these mentors not be employed at your academic institution and have experience in being a mentor. Please CENE@stti.org if you have any questions or concerns regarding this requirement. 2. Should I work with my direct supervisor and/or my dean in the development of my Institute application and project summary? Ideally, yes. By involving the direct supervisor and/or your dean in the development of the Institute application and project goals, he or she will gain an awareness of the time and support that will be required for successful participation in the Institute. This understanding and involvement should be reflected in the letter of support. 3. May I or fax the application? No. All applications must be submitted via the online application system at Page 3 of 5
4 4. Will Scholars receive continuing nursing education credit for participation? Yes. Scholars will receive CNE for online coursework and their attendance at the workshop. Application Process Faculty who are eligible to attend the EEAI should complete the EEAI Application as outlined below. The ultimate goal of the EEAI is to provide experienced nurses greater opportunities to gain leadership skills and put them into practice in an effort to advance excellence in nursing education. The online application requires that you enter the following information: 1. Contact Information and STTI Member Number (if you are a member) 2. Biographical Sketch including years of nursing education experience 3. Contact information for your immediate supervisor (i.e. dean, department chair, etc.) 4. You will then be required to upload the following items: Answers to the Application Questions (listed below) Your CV or Resume Letter of support from your dean or immediate supervisor confirming available time and resources to support participation.
