1 ISSUE 72 NOVEMBER The October-December 2015 Cambridge English exams sessions is about to come to an end, so in this edition of International Recognition we have tried to include information that we hope you will find useful for next year. The first section is about how to view Cambridge English exams grade statistics for all Cambridge English exams from 2004 to These data are very useful for you to find out how your students are doing in comparison with other learners of English in Uruguay and many other countries in the world. The second and third sections contain information about very interesting resources regarding the most common spelling mistakes at levels B1 and B2 of the Common European Framework and about a Cambridge English website from which you can download sample pages from thousands of coursebooks and methodology books for teachers. The last two sections in the bulletin contain some very interesting information too. Section four is about a webinar which addresses you emotions and well-being as a teacher and which is available to Cambridge English Teacher subscribers only. 3 Cambridge English s Statistics What percentage of students pass FCE - or any other Cambridge English exam - every year? Has the FCE pass rate gone up or down over the last 5 to 10 years? And how do the figures for Uruguay compare with other countries in Latin America and the rest of the world? You can find the answers to all these questions at the Cambridge English official website. 4 Common Spelling Mistakes What are the most common spelling mistakes at levels B1 and B2 of the CEFR? The table below will give you the answer to this question. These spelling mistakes are taken from the learner corpus which analyses candidates scripts from all over the world. Do your learners make the same mistakes? Or are there different words that are difficult for them? Top 5 misspelled verbs, nouns and adjectives at Level B1 Verbs 1. receive 2. decided 3. recommend 4. want 5. think Nouns 1. centre 2. accommodation 3. business 4. conference 5. programme Adjectives 1. beautiful 2. interesting 3. grateful 4. different 5. quiet Top 5 misspelled verbs, nouns and adjectives at Level B2 Verbs 1. recommend 2. receive 3. think 4. appreciate 5. believe Nouns 1. advertisement 2. accommodation 3. programme 4. environment 5. centre Adjectives 1. convenient 2. necessary 3. comfortable 4. available 5. interesting These examples illustrate British usage of spellings but American usage, for example, is equally acceptable in Cambridge English exams. Candidates must use a particular variety of English with some degree of consistency. 4

Language Teacher Psychology & Well-being In teacher development programmes and research in the field of language teaching, a lot of attention has been paid to the learner and their needs, wishes, motivations, emotions, and general wellbeing. Whilst this remains an important priority, the question many teachers may well ask is yes, but what about me? What about my well-being, emotions, and motivation? In this webinar, Sarah Mercer explores the important strategies that teachers can engage in to promote, maintain and protect their professional well-being. She considers ways of managing our emotions, maintaining and boosting our motivation as well as coping strategies for dealing with the various stresses that typify this demanding profession. Sarah Mercer teaches at the University of Graz, Austria where she has been working since Her research interests include all aspects of the psychology surrounding the foreign language learning experience, focusing in particular on issues of self and identity. She is the author, co-author and co-editor of several books in this area including Towards an Understanding of Language Learner Self-Concept, Psychology for Language Learning, Multiple Perspectives on the Self in SLA and Exploring Psychology for Language Teachers. 6
