Use the picture as a guide or go crazy with colour and create your own species! WHAT YOU LL NEED: - A printer - Paper - Scissors - Glue stick - Crayons or felt tip pens

3 CREATURES FEATURED IN THIS KIT... GREEN SEA TURTLE ATLANTIC BLUEFIN TUNA GREAT WHITE SHARK

4 GREAT WHITE SHARK learn How long they are: 6m (that is 3 times the size of the average daddy or mummy!). What a group of them are called: A School. How long they live (Life Span): About 30 years in the wild. Where they live: They like to live in cool coastal waters all over the world that have a temperature between 12 and 24 C (54 and 75 F). What they eat: Seal lions, seals, small whales and sea turtles. What they do: They have a streamlined, torpedo-shaped body and can swim at speeds of up to 15 miles (24 kilometers) per hour. They can even jump completely out of the water (called breaching) when attacking seals from underneath. How babies are born: Shark babies (known as pups) grow in eggs that hatch inside their mummy s tummy and continue to grow there until they are born. Why they are endangered: Because of their size and scary reputation, great white sharks are often misunderstood and sometimes hunted out of fear. Fins, jaws and teeth from great whites are also sold illegally for large amounts of money, making them a target for poachers.

8 GREEN SEA TURTLE learn How big they are: They have a shell (or carapace) size of over 1 metre. What a group of them are called: A bale. How long they live (Life Span): Up to 80 years old. Where they live: In tropical and subtropical seas all around the world, swimming great distances as they move from one place to another. What they eat: Sea grasses. What they do: Although they spend most of their time submerged under water, Green Sea Turtles need to breathe air. They can hold their breath while diving for up to 5 minutes, but when asleep and resting they can stay under the water for several hours at a time. How babies are born: Mummy turtles crawl onto the beach at night, dig a nest and lay between 100 to 200 eggs. After about 60 days, the baby turtles - called hatchlings - then emerge at night and scramble down the beach into the water. Why they are endangered: The biggest human threat to green sea turtles is the harvesting (theft) of eggs and adult turtles from the beaches where they go to nest. Other threats include getting caught up in commercial fishing nets and the destruction and loss of their favourite nesting places by humans, who build on the beaches where they nest.

12 BLUE FIN TUNA learn How long they are: 2m (longer/taller than the average daddy - or mummy!). What a group of them are called: A School. How long they live (Life Span): Up to 15 years in the wild. Where they live: They like to live in the cold waters off Newfoundland and Iceland, as well as the tropical waters of the Gulf of Mexico and the Mediterranean Sea. What they eat: Smaller fish, crustaceans, squid, and eels. What they do: Unusually for fish, Atlantic Bluefin Tuna are warm-blooded! They migrate and swim huge distances - from North American to European waters, several times a year. How babies are born: In spawn (eggs), laid by the mummy. Why they are endangered: Because of its popularity as a source of food (especially for Japanese sushi), bluefin tuna have been over-fished to the point of extinction. Fishing for bluefin tuna is now illegal in many countries, but in some countries people will pay a LOT of money (enough to buy a house!) for a single fish.
