Firefighters are exempted from holding a particular class of licence or endorsement under the Newfoundland and Labrador Highway Traffic Act Driver Regulations 1999 while operating such vehicles in the course of their duties (Section 22). However, they must have a minimum of a Class 05 licence and in some circumstances they may be by their employer to obtain these licences and endorsements. The local Fire Department requests that operators of the larger fire trucks (3 or more axels) obtain the appropriate licence (Class 03 with Air Brake endorsement) even though they are exempted (condition of employment).
