Also, available by appointments. Text: College Algebra: Concepts and Contexts(Stewart, Redlin, Watson, Panman). You are required to have Web Assign, this is where you will do Online Homework. Having the book is optional to have in class; the Online Homework will have a copy of the textbook. A graphing calculator is required. Only TI-83 or 84. Course Outline and Objectives: The main objective for this course is the development of a solid understanding of basic algebraic and the critical thinking skills necessary to solve certain problems that can arise in real world situations. In addition to the standard concepts introduced in a beginning algebra course, we will look at simple applications to these concepts arising in the social sciences, biological sciences, physics, and economics among others. Course Goals: Upon completion of this course, the student will have a basic understanding of elementary algebraic concepts including properties of the real number system and the solutions of certain equations and inequalities arising typically in a beginning college algebra course. The student will also have a working knowledge of the elementary functions of mathematics encountered in the applied sciences and at the next level of instruction, their properties, graphs, and certain operations on these functions. Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to: 1. Find exact solutions to various algebraic expressions. 2. Use elementary algebraic and graphing techniques to approximate solutions of elementary equations. 3. Recognize, interpret and solve real world type problems involving linear and exponential functions. 1

2 4. Perform the basic operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and composition of functions. 5. Use the basic transformations of graphs to produce graphs of functions. 6. Produce exact solutions of exponential and logarithmic equations. 7. Produce exact solutions of quadratic equations and interpret problems which are modeled by quadratic functions. Class Hours and Location: MTWR 8:00 am - 9:15 am in Founders Hall 226. Classroom Etiquette: 1. NO CELL PHONES, LAPTOPS, or other electronic devices IN-CLASS!!!!!!!!, other than a TI- 83 or 84 Calculator. (a) If you are texting or your cell phone goes off during a Quiz you will receive a 0 for that quiz. (b) If your cell phone goes off during class, Test, or Final Exam, you will receive a 0 for the assignment, asked to leave, and be marked absent. (c) If my cell phone goes off, everyone in class that day will receive a single Quiz grade of All quizzes and tests must be done in pencil. If work is done in pen, you will receive a Zero for each problem done in pen. 3. Do not leave any trash in the classroom. Also, if you move a desk put it back the way you found it. Treat the classroom as if you are visiting someone else s home. 4. No friends and children of the student will be permitted in the classroom while class is in session. 5. Disruptive/uncooperative students will be asked to leave the classroom, continued disturbances may result in sanctions up to and including removal from the class with a grade of F. 6. Attendance Policy: Attendance for this class is mandatory. You are allowed to miss 6 classes. Each absence after that will result in a reduction of a letter grade per absence. (a) I will take roll by either having a sign-in sheet going around or Quiz at the beginning of class. It is your responsibility to sign the sing-in sheet and to be on time to take the quiz. (b) If you are absent it is your responsibility to get any notes or assignments missed. 2

3 (c) If you are absent due to sickness and/or hospital visit you must bring in a signed doctors note. 7. Academic Integrity: It is the responsibility of every student in this to avoid dishonesty, fraud, or deceit of any type. Work submitted for grading must be completed by the student and the student alone. Any student who violates this policy or who knowingly assists another to violate this policy shall be subject to sanctions up to and including removal from the class with a grade of F. Please see the University of South Carolina Honor Code for information at 8. Homework/Quiz Policy: (a) I will not accept late Homework or give make-up Quizzes unless there are extenuating circumstances with documentation. (b) All homework will be done online via Web Assign. Grading Section. This is discussed more in (c) For all quizzes you must have your own calculator, you may not borrow a calculator from anyone in the class or use your cell phone. (d) Quizzes will be given within the first 5-10 minutes of class depending on the length of the quiz. 9. Calculator Policy: A TI-83 or -84 is required for the class. The use of the calculator on tests, quizzes, and homework is acceptable and strongly advised. Calculators may not be shared during any quiz, test, or final exam. I will also have different quizzes and test problems where you will not be allowed to use the calculator. Grading: 1. There will be 5 In-class Tests that counts for 50% of your final grade. There will an Optional Review, Given at the start of each Chapter, before each Test. I am placing those dates on the Tentative Class Schedule, the dates may change as the terms goes but I will provide a one week notice of any change. The time and location will be given at beginning of each Chapter. 3

4 2. There will be a Cumulative Final that counts for 25% of your final grade. If your Final is higher than your lowest Test Grade, I will drop your lowest Test Grade and Count your Final twice. 3. There will be an In-class Quizzes that count for 15% of your final grade. There will be no more than 2 quizzes a week. I will drop the 3 lowest Quizzes. 4. There will be assigned On-line Homework, through Web Assign, that counts for 10% of your final grade. All homework is due Nov. 30 by Midnight. I will not drop any Homework Grades. For every Chapter that has an average of 100, I will give a free 100 Quiz Grade. 5. All Test and Quiz problems will be based on a 4 point system, as shown below: 0 : No work shown at all; No correct train of thought. 1 : Many errors; Little work is shown. 2 : No work is shown for correct answer; Answer not in correct format; Multiple errors. 3 : Couple errors. 4 : Correct answer with all work shown. 6. 5 7. Grading for Extra Credit Essays: (a) For any assigned Extra Credit Lectures, dates to be determined, are worth a maximum of 5 points. The points earned will be added to the test closest to the due date; due dates will be TBA. (b) The essays are due 3 days after the lecture is given. No late essays will be excepted. (c) Requirements: i. Length minimum of 300 words, not including your name or title of essay, answering the following questions: Summary of the lecture, minimum of 100 words. What future research or work would you want to do with this lecture, and why? (Provide something even if you the topic doe not interest you.) Minimum 50 words. What is your current major and career goals? Why? minimum of 150 of words. ii. The paper should be typed, double spaced, standard 1 inch margins, Times New Roman, 12 point font, and put your name, title of lecture, and date at the top of the page in single line. (d) You will be graded on grammar, sentence structure, and meeting requirements. (e) If grading scale: Important Dates: If not right margin lengths, double spaced, font, or Times New Roman. Lose.5 for each. If not correct minimum length 2 points. No clear grammar and/sentence structure lose 1 point.
