1 Işık University Department of Information Technologies IT235 Server Side Programming Spring Lab Guide #1 OBJECTIVE: Javascript example, XAMPP Installation and test our first PHP script after interpreted by Apache Instructor Assistants : Dr. Cüneyt Sevgi : Murat Kaya Date : Week : 1 Objectives: Today, we will begin with the review on how to run a sample javascript code in an html file. And we will learn how to install XAMPP. XAMPP's name is an acronym for X (to be read as "cross", meaning cross-platform) Apache HTTP Server, MySQL, PHP, Perl. XAMPP a free and open source cross-platform web server solution stack package, consisting mainly of the Apache HTTP Server, MySQL database, and interpreters for scripts written in the PHP and Perl programming languages. Installing XAMPP takes less time than installing each of its components separately. Although, there are many XAMPP versions for Windows, Linux, and MAC OS systems, we will concentrate on solely Windows systems. After that, we will create our first Hello_World.php document by using Dreamweaver MX. You may also use any text editor (such as notepad, wordpad etc.) for writing PHP scripts. 1) Create your first javascript program using Dreamweaver MX. Now, we are going to use Dreamweaver MX to create our first javascript. STEP I Launch Dreamweaver MX (Start Programs Macromedia Macromedia Dreamweaver 8). When you launch the program, you will see an initial GUI (Graphical User Interface) as shown in the figure below. For the time being, we are interested in creating an: HTML document. So, click on HTML option in Create New group. Before going into detail, we should say that we can design the page either in Code View or Design view. STEP II When you click code tab of Dreamweaver workspace, code view window is appeared as shown below. 1

2 STEP III Analyze the codes written in your first example and automatically generated codes in the code view. And, you will copy+paste the necessary codes written in your first example. Note that, java scripts are written between <script> and </script> tags. STEP IV After that you have to save this file as an html file. To save the file look at the picture shown below. 2

3 You can see below the output of the HTML code shown above. 2) Install XAMPP to your computer (Windows). STEP I You can download XAMPP for Windows from link shown below STEP II After your installation, there will be a directory named xampp in the root directory of your hard drive. STEP III Double click on xampp directory and you will see the files of XAMPP. 3

4 STEP IV In the xampp directory you will see an icon named xampp control. Double click the icon. STEP V After launching, xampp control panel you will see a dialog as seen figure shown below. Note that all services are stopped. In the following step, we will start the Apache service. But for the time being, let s see how the.php files will be displayed before starting the Apache server. 4

5 To check the correct installation of Apache Web Server, write down localhost:8079 or on your web browser s address bar. As seen from the figure shown above, the default page cannot be displayed. This is because of Apache server has not yet been started. STEP VI To execute your.php files, we must first start Apache service from Xampp Control Panel. To start the Apache server, just click on starts button. Note that, when you start the Apache server, you will see Running label in green color. 5

6 After you start the Apache Server, again check the correct installation of Apache Web Server, write down localhost:8079 or on your web browser s address bar as shown figure below. You will see the default page.. 3) Create your first.php script using Dreamweaver MX. Now, we are going to use Dreamweaver MX to create our first.php script. STEP I Launch Dreamweaver MX (Start Programs Macromedia Macromedia Dreamweaver 8). When you launch the program, you will see an initial GUI (Graphical User Interface) as shown in the figure below. STEP IV You can view the interpreted codes in the Design view (without opening it in a browser) written in the Code view. 7

8 STEP V Save your.php document with name HelloWorld.php and save your HelloWorld.php file to Xampp/htdocs directory. STEP VI Write down localhost:8079 to your browser s address bar. Notice that, your Apache Server is working shown below. Now, change the address in the address bar to to access our.php file. 4) Create your first.php example Before starting to write our first.php example, we should mention that variables are declared with a variable preceded by a $ sign. STEP I Write the following code and save the.php file with name HelloWorld.php. 8

9 STEP II Refresh your web browser to see result of your PHP document. 5) Create your second.php example STEP I Write the following code and save the.php file with name armut.php. STEP II Write the following code and save the.html file with name elma.html. 9

10 STEP III Write the following code and save the.php file with name My_Include_Example.php. STEP IV Refresh your web browser to see result of your PHP document. 10

STEP VI Refresh your web browser to see result of your PHP document. 6) Using phpinfo(); in.php example STEP I Write the following code and save the.php file with name my_php_info.php. STEP II Refresh your web browser to see result of your PHP document. 11
