2 St Kieran's Catholic Primary School Anti Bullying Policy Purpose At St Kieran s Catholic Primary School, we believe that all members of the community have the right to a learning and work environment free from intimidation, humiliation and hurt. We all share a responsibility to foster, promote and restore right relationships. We believe that bullying is unacceptable and we [students, staff and parents] all share a responsibility for preventing it. This policy builds on the school's Pastoral Care and Behaviour Management Policies to provide clear procedures and strategies to prevent, reduce and respond to bullying. Policy Framework Flowing from the Christian vision expressed in the Diocesan Pastoral Care Policy, schools are called to establish relationships which are grounded in love, compassion, reconciliation and justice. In witnessing Christian values we reject ideas, beliefs and behaviours which marginalise or victimise people. Definition Whilst there is no universally accepted definition of bullying, there is general consensus that bullying behaviour: is deliberate and repeated intends to cause fear, distress, hurt or harm to another is action by a more powerful individual or group over a less powerful individual or group Bullying takes many forms, all of which will cause distress. Examples of bullying include: Physical - hitting, pushing, tripping, kicking, spitting on others etc Verbal - teasing, using offensive names, ridiculing, spreading rumours etc Non-Verbal - writing offensive notes or graffiti about others, using or text messaging to hurt others, rude gestures etc Exclusion - deliberately excluding others from group, refusing to sit next to someone etc Extortion - threatening to take someone's possessions, food or money etc Property - stealing, hiding, damaging or destroying property etc Cyber - any form of bullying which is carried out through electronic means such as mobile phones, , chat room, social networking, sms, web page etc How do we prevent bullying at St Kieran s School? We believe, based on research, that prevention strategies through education that involve the whole school community [students, staff and parents] are more likely to reduce bullying. Therefore, at St Kieran s Catholic School we 2

3 recognise that we all share the responsibility to prevent bullying. The Catholic Worldview which represents the antithesis of bullying will be taught explicitly, continually modelled, clearly demonstrated and generously affirmed across all facets of school life. At St Kieran s Catholic School we adopt the following strategies to prevent bullying: Explicit teaching of positive behaviours embedded within the curriculum. Engage Peer led program to promote inclusive behaviour. Tribes: Strategies developing inclusion, influence and community. Link: A program helping children who have social skill issues and resilience issues. Kids Club: A weekly lunch time club with the pastoral care team and pastoral care coordinator working on social interactions. Community Circles: Community Circles are a way of ensuring a collaborative, respectful approach to discussions. HSIE Getting to know you units at the beginning of each school year PDH Units of work: Me and My Mates (ES 1) Who Am I? (S 1) Getting along with others, (S 1) Me Myself and I (S 2) You, Me and Us (S 3) Personal Power (S 3) Choice Theory Strategies: Choice Theory offers teachers strategies for interacting with the children in order to help them to choose effective, responsible behaviours. Regularly developing, recognising and acknowledging students who demonstrate appropriate behaviours that promote and restore right relationships Weekly class awards, Library and Italian awards, Sport awards Student Leadership Program (Year 4, 5 and 6) Year 6 and Kindergarten Buddy Program School Assemblies Presentation of certificates of achievement. Regular communication of achievement in the newsletter. Vigilant classroom, playground and transition supervision Within the classroom, teachers (classroom or specialist or casual teacher) record any significant classroom issue on their individual Significant Classroom Issue Record (Form 4) (These can be found in the shared drive for teachers, Pastoral Care-Significant Behaviour Issues ) 3

4 Teachers monitor playground activity at all times and intervene where necessary. Significant playground issues are recorded on a Significant Playground Issue record (Form 1). Incidents are recorded by the teacher on playground duty, not the classroom teacher. Teachers are prompt for playground duty. Teachers accompany class to and from the playground areas for playtimes. Teachers accompany class to playground for dismissal after school. Clubs and rostered Oval Days organised for lunchtimes in order to meet children s interests and enable more productive use of the playground. Provision of safe and structured playground spaces and activities at break times Adequate supervision on playground. Students are aware of expectations and activities appropriate to specific areas. Provision for recording WH&S issues with prompt action by WH&S committee. Structured activities in specific parts of playground Designated areas for grades and restricted areas. Timetabled use of shared space and oval Clubs for specific grades at break times off At St Kieran s Catholic Primary School the community have the rights and responsibility to: Students have the RIGHT to: Safety and Respect at all times Learn in a supportive and engaging environment Staff have the RIGHT to: Safety and respect at all times Parents (volunteers) have the RIGHT to: Safety and respect at all times Be informed of their child s progress Be heard in an appropriate forum on matters relating to the rights of their child to an appropriate education Students have the RESPONSIBILITY to: Practice safe and respectful behaviours Staff have the RESPONSIBILITY to: Model safe and respectful behaviour Be aware of and implement behaviour management procedures within the school Involve parents in their child s education Parents(volunteers)have the RESPONSIBILITY to: Model safe and respectful behaviour Support the school in providing a meaningful and adequate education for their children The Police Youth Liaison Officer for St Kieran s, Manly Vale is Robyn Jennings 4

5 St Kieran s Catholic Primary School Response to a Bullying Claim by a student, parent, staff member Incident is alleged or witnessed and reported to a member of school staff Member of school staff reports to class teacher Alleged incident is investigated in the following way by class teacher as per the Diocesan Anti Bullying policy (see Appendix one) Students involved interviewed Class teacher to check Significant Classroom Issue Record Form 4 Class teacher to check Significant Playground Issue Record Form 1 As a result of the investigation CHOOSE from the following three outcomes Outcome 1 Outcome 2 Outcome 3 Alleged incident investigated by class teacher and found to be a non-bullying incident. Alleged incident investigated and recorded by class teacher. Class teacher to contact parents (phone) both sets of parents. Whole staff to be notified at business meeting and behaviour of child to be monitored. No further action See Form 2 Alleged incident investigated and recorded by class teacher who received the claim. Incident deemed bullying. Further action required. Notification of outcome of the investigation is given to the member of staff responsible for pastoral care (Principal). Member of staff responsible for pastoral care (Principal) to review the investigation process carried out by the class teacher. Once the member of staff responsible for pastoral care completes their investigation and the incident is deemed bullying ; Incident reported to Principal. Form 3 to be completed together by class teacher and member of staff responsible for pastoral care. Whole staff to be notified at business meeting. Parents are notified of a meeting with Principal/ Assistant Principal and class teacher where the incident of bullying will be addressed. Consequence will be in accordance with behavioural management guidelines. 5
