2 Undergraduate program Web Science TU/e Bachelor College The Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) clusters its bachelor s degree programs in the Bachelor College. As a student of the TU/e Bachelor College you have the scope to shape your education on the basis of your interests and ambitions. The bachelor s degree program is largely made up by your major, the field in which you later intend to work as an engineer. It is the foundation of your study program. This brochure tells you more about the content of the Web Science major in relation to the bachelor s degree program so that you can find out if Web Science appeals to you. This is Web Science In Web Science you learn to thoroughly explore the internet, not just from a technical perspective but also in terms of its use. Why do new services emerge? Who pays for it? How and why did Twitter, Flickr and Facebook emerge and why do so many people want to be seen for example, on Twitter? What are the factors that make an app successful? Does user convenience play a role in this? Web Science combines computer science with psychology, sociology, law and economics. From various disciplines you learn to understand how the internet emerged, how it is used and will develop. The major that survives all the hypes Everyone realizes that the internet is no hype, even though there are many applications and apps that quickly come and go. Web Science focuses mainly on the stable elements of the internet. You learn the technical aspects of the internet and the fundamental principles behind it, as well as the role of internet in society and how you can contribute to the further development of the internet. Bachelor s degree The Web Science major is formally part of the Computer Science & Engineering bachelor s degree program. When you graduate in this major, you are awarded the Computer Science & Engineering bachelor s degree (BSc), specialized in Web Science. Typically Web Science in Eindhoven Web Science is a major that is unique in the Netherlands. The TU/e has been teaching internetrelated studies since 1994, and also researching since that time what would later become the basic technologies for the internet: browsers, search engines, document management, application generators, etc. There is a lot of focus on convenience and in general, for technology interaction. The TU/e has always played a key role in the automated personalization and adaptivity of the internet. A lot of the practical input in the education comes from companies in the Brainport Eindhoven region. This is a big bonus for you, also when you graduate. The internet has an international character, which is why the course is in English. A suitable education for you? You are interested in technology and the online world. You want to understand the very latest internet developments and you are creative in coming up with solutions. You want to improve online life and respond to the internet needs of users. You like being online and interactive, and you keep in touch with latest media trends. You communicate well and have a determined streak. You are not averse to a solid portion of theory, whether it is mathematics or psychology.

Every day, the landscape of the Internet is evolving. We don t yet understand the full possibilities of instantaneous global communication, and the techniques we use to measure and analyze this new world are changing as fast as the latest hot app. I am especially attracted to web science because we also look at the human element: do these changes in technology affect the way we think, or talk to one another? I am constantly challenged by the people around me. Our subjects are difficult, but our teachers are brilliant and invest in helping students succeed. The people I study with are some of the smartest and most dedicated I ve ever met, and that has driven me to attempt things I never would have thought I was capable of understanding. The Bachelor s degree program Major Your major makes up half of the three-year bachelor s degree program, so it forms the basis of your education. In the major you learn methods and tools to analyze the internet and to innovate. In addition to these purely internet-geared aspects, you also cover general computer science elements including logic and programming. You put your knowledge into practice in Design-Based Learning (DBL) projects in which you work with fellow students to set up a webshop or website, for example, where nursing staff can observe patients from a distance. You analyze the use of large websites and improve the links and menu structure or use AI (Artificial Intelligence) methods to improve the available information, for example through personalization. The major is composed of the following learning tracks that comprise cohesive subjects from a particular Web Science domain: Theory and algorithms: The necessary basic knowledge of mathematics and computer science in order to be able to specify software systems and argue in terms of efficiency and correctness. Software development: The systematic development of correct and efficient software (systems). The use of various development and testing methods along with special project management techniques. Web technology: Important topics in the development of web applications, both the harder internet technology and knowledge about networks, like dedicated methods such as data mining. ICT in context: Essential theory from fields like psychology, sociology, economics and humantechnology interaction. Basic subjects In addition to your major you follow the TU/e basic subjects like Calculus and Physics for Technology as well as developing your professional competencies like cooperating and organizing. Electives A quarter of your bachelor s degree program comprises elective subjects that enable you to accentuate aspects of your education. You may opt to deepen your knowledge of your own field. To help you choose, the education offers a number of elective packages. Of course, it is up to you whether you want to use these packages. USE subjects Finally, you choose USE subjects. USE stands for User, Society and Enterprise. These subjects show how technology always operates in a broader context. Engineers develop technology for users to contribute to solutions for societal problems and to create business opportunities for industry. Information systems: Techniques to order and manage data, with a focus on the intended use. Special attention on operating information systems.

4 TU EINDHOVEN LEARN/EXPLORE/INNOVATE Success is a process. Learn the fundamentals, explore the possibilities, and innovate to solve problems. The Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) offers an excellent learning environment that allows you to excel. You will appreciate our personal approach - in the lecture room, on campus and in guidance by professors. We will help you find your way. Together with your own drive and ambition this will be your way to success. Specifically: the first year In the first year you will be working at the TU/e a lot, attending lectures and doing programming assignments or working in a group in DBL projects. In Programming you learn the Java programming language and the elementary principles of (object-oriented) programming. To be able to solve simple algorithmic problems you will obtain basic knowledge on Data Structures. To be able to make logically- connected web applications you must, as a developer, be able to argue with logic. The knowledge that you acquire in the logic and set theory subject is indispensable in the design of information systems that may be used in online shopping or banking. In the Human-Technology Interaction subject you learn to develop ergonomic user-interfaces that are also efficient and effective, employing knowledge from the Psychology & Technology subject. In a group you specify, design and build a hypermedia system in the first DBL project. The most familiar example is the World Wide Web (www), on which everyone can publish information and link the pages and sites of others. You develop professional competencies in various training sessions, like conferencing and project-based working. A tutor monitors and supervises the process. Finally all the groups demonstrate their systems and explain their design. The best performing team wins a prize! Intensive coaching Experienced TU/e coaches offer you personalized advice during your entire education, from start to finish. This begins during your enrollment, when you and your coach choose the major that suits you best and select your electives. This way you shape your study program in line with your interests and ambitions. If you realize during the first year that a different major suits you better, then you and your coach will check the possibilities to switch your major during that first year. In addition to a personal coach, you also get help from a study counselor and from senior students who mentor groups of first-year students of which you are a member. During your initial period of study they can show you the ropes. What next after graduation? Once you graduate in Computer Science & Engineering as a Web Science specialist, you are ready for a career as a web developer finding solutions for customers or developing an app or application for users groups for example. As a creative soul with a technology background you have good insight into the needs of the end user and can come up with innovative solutions. For example, you create an effective virtual conference room for virtual conferencing or you gather information and develop personal newsflashes. You design a portal with all the European master s degree programs or improve web services by using the latest data mining method. On to a master s degree After completing your Web Science bachelor s degree, you can go on to the TU/e master s degree programs in Computer Science and Engineering (with its special tracks Information Security Technology and EIT Service Design and Engineering tracks) or Business Information Systems. You can also choose the Science Education and Communication (SEC) master s degree program, in combination with one of the other aforementioned master s degree programs if you want. With the SEC degree in your pocket, you are qualified to teach computer science to pre-university pupils.

As a PhD researcher I want to understand what they are capable of and, above all, how our lives can be made easier and better. Certainly, the computer can take over much of our routine work so that we can focus on what we are good at as people. I graduated from TU/e in data mining, a relatively new field that enables us to discover statistical links in huge quantities of data. But the nicest thing about this is using that knowledge for practical purposes. For example in healthcare where data mining enables the very precise measurements of a person s heart rate or breathing to establish exactly when there are periods of deep sleep. This deep sleep is invaluable for a person s physical and psychological condition. In any case, the link between theory and practice business, industry, healthcare institutions is very close in Eindhoven. This also made my time at the TU/e very rewarding.
