3 3 ADMISSION/ENTRY REQUIREMENTS All South African applicants must meet the following list of entry requirements to be eligible for admission. The minimum admission requirements is a National Senior Certificate (NSC) with a minimum of 30 39% in the language of learning and teaching of the institution (in our case it is English) coupled with an achievement rating of 3, 40-49% or better in four recognised subjects. Subjects such as Hospitality studies, Tourism and Computer Applications Technology, Design are recognised national senior certificate subjects. All recognised subjects have a credit value of 20, except Life Orientation (10) and thus therefore not count. Duration: 2 Years NQF Level: 6 Exit Level Credits: 245 SAQA Qualification ID no.: PURPOSE / PROGRAM DESCRIPTION The 2-year full-time Diploma in Print Production and Design is an extremely creative and practical course where you can bring your imagination to life in a final product as you saw it in your mind s eye. This Diploma encourages learners to develop a greater understanding of the key skills and techniques essential to developing computer generated designs. The course consists of a series of activities which will enable the learner s to become more familiar with specific equipment, software and design processes. The course has been designed to progress and advance the learners developing skills. In this course the learner will focus on preparing creative work, both hand rendered and computer generated, suitable for print. They will learn about all aspects of design including digital graphics, print, pre-press, packaging, drawing, technical and commercial illustration and typography. In addition they will focus on professional skills needed to work successfully in any business environment including interpreting briefs and project management. The learner s professional development is an integral part of any success they will have in securing employment as a graphic designer. The Diploma in Print Production & Design emphasises innovative and design processes that deals with visual communication while providing the technical knowledge necessary for a challenging and exciting career in the creative industry. YEAR 1 SUBJECT 1: DESKTOP PUBLISHING THEORY This subject will equip students with knowledge of typography, layout and the production of material for the print industry. It includes the key elements to produce resourceful and effective work in the desktop publishing environment as well as within context of marketing, specifically advertising communication. SUBJECT 2: DESIGN CONCEPTS (ADOBE ILLUSTRATOR) This subject consists of stages of design, from visualising your ideas and thoughts on paper, digitising your ideas and printing them out. A range of concepts and theoretical components pertaining to the design industry is explored. Students are required to demonstrate understanding of the skills, techniques and methodologies used within the design environment. It emphasises creative thinking that stimulates out of the box ideas to create functional design products. SUBJECT 3: FUNDAMENTALS OF DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY This subject serves as a basic introduction to the field of digital photography. Basic image formation principles are explained in theory and in practice. Operational techniques, camera settings, compositional rules and their application are also investigated. This will enable students with the solid grounding in the digital image making process. Attention is also given to a variety of photography genres as well as the ethical considerations regarding digital manipulation. SUBJECT 4: E-PUBLICATION GRAPHICS AND ILLUSTRATION (ADOBE ILLUSTRATOR BEGINNERS) This subject teaches students how to create and refine vector illustrations for a number of different applications. Students will be equipped with a wide range of techniques to create professional designs that

4 includes creation of illustrations, logos and packaging. The subject aims to equip students will necessary skills to create illustrations with in the context of a design brief. SUBJECT 5: E-PHOTO EDITING (ADOBE PHOTOSHOP) This subject is for those who have little or no experience with photographic software and provides a solid foundation in the fundamental tools and techniques used to create professional effects and achieve stunning visuals. It will develop essential knowledge and skills in digital imaging using computer graphics and photographic software, including a range of imaging and editing tools. These tools are specifically used for creating, manipulating and retouching computer graphics and photographs. SUBJECT 6: E-PAGE LAYOUT AND TYPOGRAPHY DESIGN (ADOBE INDESIGN) This subject will develop knowledge and associated essential skills in creating page layouts for print-ready publications. Students will be able to create multi-page documents, import and edit text, create and work with styles, use graphics, work with tables and print documents. They will be introduced to page layout software and the use thereof to format and arrange documents, navigate effectively and use the appropriate tools. It includes sophisticated layout of images and text to create posters, flyers, brochures, corporate identities, magazines, books as well as interactive PDF documents. The subject also covers terminology and methods relating to good design habits relevant to page layout and typography. This qualification provides candidates with the relevant knowledge, attitudes and skills as currently required in print production design at an advanced level, both nationally and internationally. SUBJECT 7: TYPOGRAPHY This subject will give the student insight into where text originated the foundations thereof, the physical construction of the letter type as lines and spaces together with the understanding of the use of negative image spaces. This subject also covers the combinations of text and images to construct a better visual understanding of a concept. The practical and technical application of text to book cover, brochures, visual designs, web etc. is explored in depth. 4 SUBJECT 8: PREPRESS This subject is the foundation of printing and creating a document for output in the desktop environment such as the construction of a magazine which contains the specific colour use, binding processes, dot grain, package and preparation for output. It covers all the printing processes, colour subject, meaning of colour, meaning of RGB and CMYK, purpose and meaning of ICC profile and the use of it in the Desktop environment. In addition, attention is paid to utilising project management by working with financial management, project requirement review on the design projects. SUBJECT 9: ENTREPRENEURSHIP This subject introduces the student to the entrepreneurial world and creates a platform for more advanced studies in this field. Students will explore the unique characteristics of the Entrepreneur as an individual who seizes opportunities to develop new products and services which satisfy the multiple needs of consumers with limited resources. Specific techniques for releasing creativity in the development and growth of new business ventures will be presented in practical terms. The differences between concepts such as: Entrepreneurship and Intrapreneurship ; creativity and innovation ; feasibility and viability, will also be explained with the aim to sensitise students for business opportunities even within existing and well established business environments. This subject finally introduces the student to the requirements of a structured mini-business plan. The role of women as emerging entrepreneurs is also highlighted, accompanied with base-line knowledge of the advantages and disadvantages of the existing legal business forms available to entrepreneurs in South Africa. YEAR 2 SUBJECT 1: E-IMAGE MANIPULATION) (ADOBE PHOTOSHOP) The subject is designed to develop essential skills in digital imaging using computer graphics and photographic software. The unit/subject provides learners with the opportunity to develop knowledge and apply skills in relation to these different software functions, as well as a range of imaging and editing tools. These tools are specifically used for creating, manipulating and retouching computer graphics and photographs. This subject will form part of a qualification that will equip students with a sound theoretical and practical knowledge in this particular field. The candidate with this qualification will be able to apply relevant knowledge, attitudes, and skills in print production design at an advanced level. SUBJECT 2: APPLIED ADVERTISING AND PROMOTIONS This subject will equip students with a comprehensive understanding of the key areas of advertising and promotion as part of an integrated approach to marketing communications. Students will develop the ability to determine specific promotional activities in response to target audience and other stakeholders characteristics and needs, and to apply and justify chosen promotional mixes within a strategic and tactical framework. Specific attention is also paid to the role of below-the-line techniques and how they are used as well as the integrated promotional strategy.

5 5 SUBJECT 3: ADVANCED E-PAGE LAYOUT AND TYPOGRAPHY (ADOBE INDESIGN) This subject introduces students to advanced page layout and typography, how to format and arrange advanced documents, navigate effectively and use the appropriate tools. Students will develop a good understanding of advanced settings for page layout and its application to create page layouts for printready publications such as posters, flyers, brochures, corporate identities, magazines, books as well as interactive PDF. documents. It includes creating multi-page documents, importing and editing text, creating and working with styles, using graphics, as well as working with tables and print documents. The practice is combined with key terminology and methods relating to good design habits relevant to page layout and typography. It is required of students to take their print designs to a more advanced level. SUBJECT 4: INTERACTIVE MEDIA DESIGNS (ADOBE IN DESIGN INTERACTIVE) Interactive Media Design is a practical, introductory subject to the world of interactive and digital media design. The focus will be on creating interactive experiences that are both functional and engaging. This will be approached from various points-of-view: design, usability, technique and entertainment. The focus will not only be the specifics on how to make something work, but strategies concerning how to make it work well, while making it easy to understand and fun for your audience. SUBJECT 5: ADVANCED E-GRAPHICS & ILLUSTRATION (ADOBE ILLUSTRATOR) This subject teaches students how to create and refine vector illustrations for a number of different applications. Students will be equipped with a wide range if techniques and necessary skills to create professional designs that include creation of illustration, logo, adverts and packaging within context of a design brief. SUBJECT 6: E-PDF EDITING (ADOBE ACROBAT) This subject will equip students with the necessary knowledge to deliver highly professional PDF communications. It covers creating and editing PDF files with rich media included, share information more securely, and gather team feedback more efficiently. Other aspects included utilising word search, organising documents, combining documents and converting files into different formats, as well as utilising multimedia features by adding movies, slideshows, picture tasks and making documents responsive by adding in links is but some of the features. SUBJECT 7: WORK-BASED LEARNING Work-based learning (also called internship or professional practicum) happens in your final year of study. It involves learning through placement at a company for the purpose of gaining hands-on experience through executing actual tasks and assignments. Work-based learning is structured around a clear purpose, performance (outcome) targets and procedures in collaboration with the employer and lecturer(s) concerned. It provides students with an opportunity to acquire first-hand experience of the world of work in the industry concerned. Students should acquire an in-depth knowledge of workplace practices as well as a broad knowledge and understanding of how the host organisation operates. They should develop competencies that are impossible or highly unlikely in the classroom environment, for instance the ability to deal with challenges and problems within context of the workplace itself. They will also develop the ability to integrate knowledge and skills across all program subjects at practical level.
