Response to INTERVENTION (RtI) A PARENT GUIDE FOR READING
Instructional & Behavioral Strategies.
WHAT IS Response to Intervention? Response to Intervention (RtI) is based on the concept of providing evidence-based instructional and behavioral strategies that are matched to student needs and monitored on a frequent basis. The information gathered by this approach is used to make decisions regarding the student s educational program. In other words, we will provide our students with what they need to be successful.
Get help immediately. WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF Response to Intervention? Perhaps the greatest benefit of an RtI approach is that it eliminates a wait to fail situation because students get help immediately within the general education setting. If data indicates a problem area for a student or group of students, interventions are put into place to address these concerns. While interventions are taking place school staff monitors student progress. In the RtI process, teachers regularly review this data and use it to evaluate student needs. They are then able to match instruction, resources, and interventions appropriately to best serve Centennial students.
WHAT IS THE PROCESS OF Response to Intervention? Our system of RtI is layered into three tiers of instruction explained below: TIER II Education that provides help for students who need more support than they are receiving from the typical general core curriculum. 3 2 TIER III Education that provides more individualized instruction for students who need the most support. 1 TIER I Education for all students from high quality core reading curriculum and instruction in the regular classroom.
WHAT IS MY INVOLVEMENT IN Tier 1? Remember, Tier 1 takes place in the reading classroom. Parents are involved in the following ways: Ask your child about his/her school day. Monitor and assist with homework assignments. Support and reinforce the classroom teachers. Praise your child for good work and discuss issues that are problems. Frequently communicate with your child s teacher and meet with him/her if your child starts to experience difficulties. Attend school functions, such as parent-teacher conferences and family nights.
WHAT IS MY INVOLVEMENT IN Tier 2? If your child is struggling in reading, it might be necessary for the school to implement reading interventions. In many cases, this will be enough to get your child back on track. Your involvement could include the following: Support, praise, and encourage your child as he/she improves. If necessary, implement and reinforce strategies at home. If necessary, attend team meetings. Be involved.
WHAT IS MY INVOLVEMENT IN Tier 3? If adequate growth is not made, it is sometimes necessary to provide further instruction. Tier 3 is designed to provide a smaller student to teacher ratio and more individualized instruction. Your involvement could include the following: Continue to reinforce strategies at home. Continue to reinforce your child as he/she improves. Continue to be involved in team meetings. Beyond Tier 3, it is sometimes necessary to make a referral for an evaluation. This evaluation will determine if your child needs special education services. In this case, an educational plan will be established to best meet the needs of your child. This is a very formal process and parental involvement is essential and encouraged. For more information, contact your child s reading teacher.
RtI READING Terms & Definitions Accommodations - the act of meeting a student s needs without altering what is being taught. This is not an intervention. DIBELS Next - Dynamic Indicator of Basic Early Literacy Skills; assesses and monitors basic early literacy skills, reading fluency, and reading comprehension in comparison to grade-level peers. Differentiated Instruction - the practice of making lessons different to accommodate the variance of students' skills in a single classroom. Intervention - providing additional practice or instruction that aims to increase the student's reading skills. Modifications - changes in the curriculum which address a student s needs. This is not an intervention. NWEA MAP - *Northwest Educational Association Measures of Academic Progress; *creates a personalized assessment experience by adapting to each student's learning level - precisely measuring student progress and growth for each individual in the areas of math, reading, and language. Progress Monitoring - the process of periodically administering assessments to measure reading growth.
