2 Copyright and Fair Use Guidelines for Teachers Note: All works must be properly attributed. For a free printable chart showing this information and more, go to Printed Material Poem less than 250 words; 250-word excerpt of poem greater than 250 words Articles, stories, or essays less than 2,500 words Excerpt from a longer work (10 percent of work or 1,000 words, whichever is less) One chart, picture, diagram, or cartoon per book or per periodical issue Two pages (maximum) from an illustrated work less than 2,500 words, Video The material must be legitimately acquired. Material must be used in a classroom or nonprofit environment dedicated to face-to-face instruction. Use should be instructional, not for entertainment or reward. Copying OK only if replacements are unavailable at a fair price or in a viable format. Music A maximum of 30 seconds per musical composition may be used. Microsoft Office Clip Art No citations are needed when using clip art from Microsoft Clip Art. Creative Commons Please note that search.creativecommons.org is not a search engine, but rather offers convenient access to search services provided by other independent organizations. CC has no control over the results that are returned. Do not assume that the results displayed in this search portal are under a CC license. You should always verify that the work is actually under a CC license by following the link. Since there is no registration to use a CC license, CC has no way to determine what has and hasn't been placed under the terms of a CC license. If you are in doubt you should contact the copyright holder directly, or try to contact the site where you found the content.
