1 College of Education and Human Services Freshmen Scholarships Tom Austin and Donna Hale Scholarship For freshmen entering an undergraduate degree program within the Criminal Justice Department. Applicants must US residents or Canadian citizens, must demonstrate financial need and complete the FAFSA to be eligible. The scholarship may be retained providing the recipient completes 12 credits per semester, remains enrolled in a degree program in the Criminal Justice department and maintains a QPA of 2.5. Theodore and Blanche Barnhart Elementary Education Scholarship For entering full-time freshmen majoring in elementary education with a minimum SAT score of 1000 and rank in the upper 20 percent of their high school class. First preference is given to students from Hanover and Chambersburg, PA and the immediate surrounding area. If no qualified student from the above-defined regions apply, the scholarship will be awarded to a resident from the state of PA. Recipients of this four-year scholarship must maintain a 3.2 cumulative GPA at the end of each academic year, complete a minimum of twelve credits per semester, and major in Elementary Education. George R. and Margaret H. Brindle Scholarship For incoming full-time freshmen who are legal residents of PA who have declared themselves Teacher Education candidates intending to complete the core subjects in Teacher Education for certification purposes. Recipients must have a minimum combined SAT score of 1100 and rank in the top 15 percent of their high school class. Recipients of this four consecutive academic year scholarship must maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA at the end of each academic year, complete 12 credits per semester, and remain enrolled as a Teacher Education candidate intending to complete the core subjects in Teacher Education for certification purposes. Applicants must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to be considered. Class of 1950 Scholarship For incoming full-time freshmen who have declared themselves Teacher Education candidates, intending to complete the core subjects in Teacher Education for certification purposes. Recipients must have a minimum combined SAT score of 1000 and rank in the upper 20 percent of their high school class. Recipients of this four consecutive academic year scholarship must maintain a 2.8 cumulative GPA at the end of each academic year, complete 12 credits per semester, and remain enrolled as a Teacher Education candidate intending to complete the core subjects in Teacher Education for certification purposes. Applicants are required to complete the FAFSA to be considered for this scholarship. Class of 1954 Scholarship This scholarship is presented to an entering freshman enrolled in the teacher education curriculum who scored a minimum of 1000 on the SAT examination and who ranks in the top fifth of their high school class. The scholarship is renewable for four academic years provided a cumulative GPA of 2.8 is maintained. Anna Davis and David C. Smith Scholarship For entering full-time freshmen who are Teacher Education candidates within the College of Education and Human Services. Recipients must have an SAT score of 1050 and have graduated in the upper half of their class. First priority will be given to graduates of the Mt.

2 Lebanon School District, then graduates of Perry or Juniata County i. enrolling in Shippensburg University s English Department (Secondary Education) ii. pursuing teacher certification in another Secondary Education field iii. enrolling in Shippensburg University s Elementary Education Department. This scholarship may be retained for an additional three years providing the student completes 12 credits per semester, maintains a 3.0 cumulative GPA and remains enrolled as a Teacher Education candidate. O. Richard Forsythe English Education Scholarship For incoming full-time freshmen who have declared themselves Teacher Education candidates for certification purposes in the subject area of English. Applicants are required to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid to be considered for this scholarship. This scholarship may be retained for four (4) consecutive years provided the recipient completes a minimum of twelve (12) credits per semester and remains enrolled in Teacher Education for certification purposes in the subject area of English. The recipient must maintain a cumulative GPA that equals or exceeds a 3.0 and equals or exceeds the minimum needed for a student to remain a Teacher Education candidate. Dr. James R. and Mrs. Phyllis B. Geyer Teacher Education Scholarship For incoming, full-time, freshmen majoring in Teacher Education within the College of Education and Human Services. Recipient must have scored a minimum SAT score of 1100 and rank in the top 20 percent of their high school class. Recipients of this four-year scholarship must maintain a 3.2 cumulative GPA at the end of each academic year, complete 12 credits per semester, and remain enrolled in Teacher Education within the College of Education and Human Services. Class of 1949 Dr. J. Bernard Hogg Memorial Scholarship Fund For incoming, full-time, freshmen who are a resident of PA, majoring in Teacher Education intending to complete the core subjects in Teacher Education for certification purposes. The recipient must have a minimum SAT score of 1000 and rank in the upper 20 percent of his or her high school class. Applicants are required to complete the FAFSA to be considered for this scholarship. This scholarship may be retained for four consecutive academic years provided the recipient remains enrolled in Teacher Education intending to complete the core subjects in Teacher Education for certification purposes, maintains a 2.5 cumulative GPA at the end of each academic year, and completes a minimum of 12 credits per semester. Dr. Dilys Martha Jones Memorial Scholarship This scholarship is for incoming full-time freshmen that declare themselves a Teacher Education candidate intending to complete the core subjects in Teacher Education for certification purposes. Recipients must have a minimum combined SAT score of 1000 and rank in the top 20 percent of their high school class. Preference is given to residents of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Recipients of this four consecutive academic year scholarship must maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA at the conclusion of each academic year and complete 12 credits per semester. Dr. Harry L. Kriner Memorial Scholarship Recipients must be entering full-time freshmen who major in the Elementary Education program within the Teacher Education Department and have an interest in pursuing additional certification in early childhood education. Applicants must complete the FAFSA to be considered for this scholarship. Recipients of this four consecutive academic year scholarship must complete 12 credits per semester and remain enrolled in the Elementary Education

3 program within the Teacher Education Department and actively pursue additional certification in early childhood education. Lillian Gertrude Bodes Kovach Memorial Scholarship Recipients must be entering full-time freshmen who have declared themselves as seeking certification to teach at the elementary level. Applicants must have an SAT score of 1000 out of 1600 and have graduated in the upper half of their high school class. Applicants must demonstrate financial need and complete the FAFSA to be eligible. First preference is given to students from Somerset County, second preference from Fayette County. The scholarship may be retained for 4 years provided the student completes 12 credits per semester and continues to seek certification to teach at the elementary level. Dr. Gerald A. Leidy Outstanding Student Scholarship This scholarship is awarded to entering freshmen who intend to seek certification to teach at the elementary level or to teach a specified discipline at the secondary level. Applicants must have a minimum score of 1200 out of 1600 on the SAT and have graduated in the upper 10% of their high school class. This scholarship may be retained for up to 4 consecutive academic years provided the student remains enrolled as a full-time student, completes a minimum of 12 credits per semester, continues as a student seeking certification to teach at the elementary level or to teach a specified discipline at the secondary level and maintains a 3.4 cumulative GPA at the end of each academic year. Jack and Margaret Lemmon Memorial Scholarship Fund This scholarship is awarded to entering full-time freshmen majoring in Criminal Justice or Social Work who are United States residents. Applicants are required to complete the FAFSA. This scholarship may be retained for 4 consecutive academic years provided the recipient completes a minimum of 12 credits per semester, remains enrolled in an undergraduate degree program within the Criminal Justice or Social Work Departments, and maintains a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale at the end of each academic year. Helen I. Lower Elementary Education Scholarship For incoming, full-time, freshmen majoring in Elementary Education, who demonstrate financial need and academic promise. Recipients must have a minimum SAT score of 1000 and rank in the upper two-fifths of their high school class. Applicants must present two letters of recommendation from non-relatives regarding academic performance, interest in children, and potential for collegiate success. They must also write a letter indicating interest in education, Shippensburg University, high school or out of school activities and interests, to give a broader view of the applicant personally as well as their writing skills. The scholarship may be renewed in subsequent years pending a review of the Selection Committee based upon academic progress of the recipient. Floyd M. and Dorothy Heisey Mains Scholarship For an entering freshman majoring in Elementary Education with a minimum SAT score of 1100 and rank in the upper 20 percent of their high school class. Applicants from Cumberland and Franklin counties, PA, are given priority consideration. Recipients of this four-year scholarship must maintain a 3.2 cumulative GPA at the end of each academic year and complete 12 credits per semester to retain the scholarship. Students cannot benefit from this scholarship for more than four years.

4 McGaughey-Higgins Outstanding Student Scholarship For incoming, full-time, freshmen students majoring in Education. Applicants must have a minimum SAT score of 1200 and have graduated in the top 10 percent of their high school class. Recipients can retain this scholarship for four consecutive academic years if they maintain a 3.2 cumulative GPA at the end of each semester and complete 12 credits per semester. Eleze P. and Chester S. McKenzie Scholarship For incoming, full-time, freshmen majoring in English with certification to teach English. Applications must have a minimum SAT score of 1100 and have graduated in the upper onefifth of their high school class. Recipients can retain this scholarship for four consecutive academic years if they remain enrolled as an English major with certification to teach English and complete 12 credits per semester. Glenn S. and Susan Robertson Minick Scholarship Applicants must be entering freshmen who intend to seek certification to teach at the elementary level or teach a specified discipline at the secondary level. Applicants must have a minimum SAT score of 1100 and have graduated in the upper one-fifth of their high school class. Evidence of financial need is required students must complete the FAFSA to be considered. This scholarship may be retained for up to 4 consecutive years provided the recipient completes a minimum of 12 credits per semester and remains enrolled as a student seeking certification to teach at the elementary level or to teach a specified discipline at the secondary level. Darby D. and Joseph H. Muggio Scholarship For incoming freshmen who intend to major in Teacher Education for Elementary Education or Business Education certification purposes. Applicants are required to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. Students must have graduated with a minimum SAT score of 1100 and have ranked in the top fifth of their high school class. Recipients can retain this scholarship for four consecutive academic years if they remain enrolled as a Teacher Education candidate intending to complete the core subjects in Teacher Education for Elementary Education or Business Education certification purposes, complete 12 credits per semester and maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA. Ethel L. ( Hoover ) Oyler Elementary Education Scholarship For incoming full-time freshmen majoring in Elementary Education with a minimum SAT score of 1150 and rank in the upper 20 percent of their high school class. Preference is given to applicants from Franklin County, PA. If no qualified students from Franklin County apply, the scholarship will be awarded to a student from the state of PA. Recipients of this four consecutive year scholarship must maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA at the end of each academic year, remain enrolled in Elementary Education, and complete 12 credits per semester. Vera W. Patterson Memorial Scholarship For incoming freshmen, entering an undergraduate degree program in the Criminal Justice Department. Applicants must demonstrate financial need and complete the FAFSA to be considered for this scholarship. First preference is given to residents of Allegheny, Beaver, Butler, Fayette, Greene, Somerset, Washington and Westmoreland. Second preference is to residents of Armstrong, Clarion Crawford, Erie, Forest, Indiana, Jefferson, Lawrence, Mercer, Venango and Warren. This scholarship may be retained for 4 consecutive academic years provided the recipient completes 12 credits per semester, remains enrolled in a degree

5 program within the Criminal Justice Department, and maintains a cumulative GPA of 2.5 at the end of each academic year. John A. Pringle Criminal Justice Scholarship Fund Recipients of this scholarship must be entering full-time freshmen majoring in an undergraduate degree program administered by the Criminal Justice Department. A minimum SAT score of 1100 and rank in the upper one-tenth of their high school class is required. Recipients should demonstrate outstanding character and citizenship traits, including community activities/service, along with a demonstrated knowledge of the founding documents of the United States of America the Declaration of Independence, and the U.S. Constitution. This scholarship may be retained for 4 consecutive academic years provided the recipient completes 12 credits per semester, remains enrolled in an undergraduate degree administered by the Criminal Justice Department, and maintains a 3.0 cumulative GPA at the end of each academic year. Each year the recipient will write a letter of commendation and appreciation for services rendered to a member of the law enforcement community (or to the family of a law enforcement agent who has been killed in the line of duty) who has distinguished himself/herself in the performance of duties in PA or any other state of the United States of America. Additionally the student recipient will write an internship paper based on firsthand internship experiences with an agency pertaining to law enforcement and/or the judicial system that upholds American values, morals, principles, and ethics of our country s Founders, the Declaration of Independence, and the U.S. Constitution, and our American heritage. Albert Lindsay Rowland and Ruth Hodge Scholarship For incoming, full time, freshmen majoring in a degree administered by the College of Education and Human Services. A minimum SAT score of 1000 is required and applicants must have graduated in the upper fifth of their high school class. This scholarship may be retained for four consecutive academic years provided the recipient maintains a 3.0 cumulative GPA at the end of each year, completes a minimum of 12 credits per semester and remains enrolled in a degree administered by the College of Education and Human Services. Vincent G. and Nancy Hykes Stankus Scholarship Recipients must be entering full-time freshmen who have declared themselves as seeking certification to teach at the elementary level or to teach a specified discipline at the secondary level. Applicants must have an SAT score of 1100 out of 1600 and have graduated in the upper one fifth of their high school class. Applicants must demonstrate financial need and complete the FAFSA to be eligible. The scholarship may be retained for 4 years provided the student completes 12 credits per semester and continues to seek certification to teach at the elementary level or to teach a specified discipline at the secondary level. Ann Baldwin Taylor Scholarship Recipients must be entering full-time freshmen who have declared themselves as seeking certification to teach at the elementary level with preference given to applicants who will persue certification at the early childhood level. Applicants must have an SAT score of 1100 out of 1600 and have graduated in the upper one fifth of their high school class. The scholarship may be retained for 4 years provided the student completes 12 credits per semester and continues to seek certification to teach at the elementary level. Dr. Paul L. Stone Scholarship This scholarship is awarded to entering full-time freshmen majoring in Elementary Education. Recipients must demonstrate good character and citizenship and show evidence of

6 involvement in their community and extra-curricular activities. This scholarship may be retained for four consecutive years provided the recipient remains enrolled in the Elementary Education program and completes a minimum of 12 credits per semester. Strine/Stoner Memorial Scholarship This scholarship is awarded to entering freshmen who are Teacher Education majors, planning to complete the core subjects in Teacher Education for certification purposes. Recipients must be residents of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania with priority preference given to students from the counties of Cumberland and Dauphin counties who demonstrate financial need and complete the FAFSA. The scholarship may be retained for four consecutive academic years provided recipients complete a minimum of 12 credits per semester and remain enrolled as Teacher Education majors. Barbara Jones Swartley Memorial Scholarship For incoming, full-time, freshmen who have declared themselves Teacher Education candidates intending to complete the core subjects in Teacher Education for certification purposes. Candidates must indicate an interest in teaching at the middle school level. Recipients must demonstrate financial need and must complete the FAFSA to be considered for this scholarship. Recipients of this four consecutive academic year scholarship must complete 12 credits per semester and remain enrolled as a Teacher Education candidate intending to complete the core subjects in Teacher Education for certification purposes. Dr. Harry D. Sweely and Virginia Schell Sweely Scholarship This scholarship is for full time freshmen majoring in the Elementary Education program within the Teacher Education Department. Applicants must have achieved a minimum SAT score of 1100 and have graduated in the upper fifth of their high school class. Recipients of this four consecutive year scholarship must maintain a 3.2 cumulative GPA at the end of each academic year, complete a minimum of 12 credits per semester, and remain enrolled in the Elementary Education program administered by the Teacher Education Department. Virginia Thrush Education Scholarship This scholarship is for full-time freshmen majoring in Teacher Education and intending to complete the core subjects for certification purposes in Social Studies, with a minimum SAT score of 1050 and rank in the upper one-fifth of their high school class. Priority consideration is given in the following order: Graduates of Shippensburg Area School District; Residents of Cumberland and Franklin counties (PA); Residents of PA. Recipients of this four consecutive year scholarship must maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA at the end of each academic year, complete a minimum of 12 credits per semester, and remain enrolled in Comprehensive Social Studies. Dorothy S. Weaver Scholarship This scholarship is for full-time incoming freshmen who are entering Shippensburg University s Elementary Education program in the Teacher Education Department. Applicants are required to complete the Free Application of Federal Student Aid. The scholarship may be renewed for four years providing the applicant completes a minimum of 12 credits per semester and remains enrolled in the Elementary Education program in the Teacher Education Department. Wilkens Scholarship

7 Applicants must be full-time freshmen who have declared themselves a Teacher Education candidate intending to complete the core subjects in Teacher Education for secondary education certification purposes in English. This scholarship is renewable for up to four consecutive academic years provided the recipient remains as a Teacher Education candidate intending to complete the core subjects in Teacher Education for secondary education certification purposes in English, maintains a 3.0 cumulative GPA at the end of each academic year and completes 12 credits each semester. The College of Education and Human Services Upper Division Scholarships Drs. Bartos and Hockersmith College of Education and Human Services Deans Scholarship For students majoring in a degree offered in the College of Education and Human Services who have completed 60 credits before receiving the scholarship and who have a QPA or 3.0 or above. If offered to a junior, the recipient may retain the scholarship for their senior year provided they complete 12 credits per semester and maintain a QPA of 3.0 or above. Wilbur O. Carthey Achievement Award This award is presented annually to one or more outstanding second semester sophomore majors from the College of Education and Human Services. Recipients are chosen for their scholarship and professional qualities. Class of 1908 Earle H. Schaeffer Scholarship Award This award is for a full-time student who has completed his or her sophomore or junior year with an interest in teaching. Class of 1933 Scholarship This award is for an Education major who has completed the sophomore or junior year and who has demonstrated financial need. Catharine H. Ellenberger Scholarship Fund For full-time graduate students in the Counseling program at Shippensburg University pursuing a Master of Education degree. Students in the Master of Education degree curriculum in Counseling may specialize in Elementary School Counseling or in Secondary School Counseling. This scholarship may be retained provided the recipient continues to meet the criteria. Dr. Donald Froiland Professional Development Award Recipient must be a graduate student in the Counseling program in their final semester, preparing to graduate. Recipient must be actively seeking employment in his/her field and attending a College Student Personnel conference. Joan Hilkert Memorial Scholarship This scholarship is presented to a junior majoring in Government or Public Administration who demonstrates academic excellence and promise of professional success.

8 Juvenile Justice Scholarship This scholarship is presented to junior and senior Administration of Justice majors demonstrating a sincere interest in the field. Financial need is taken into consideration. Carl A. Naugle Family Graduate Fellowship This fellowship is available to full-time graduate students pursuing a Master of Science degree in either college Student Personnel work or College Counseling. Recipients must have achieved a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.2 on a 4.0 scale in their undergraduate degree. John Weldon Scott Scholarship For incoming full-time freshmen, or students currently enrolled, who are majoring in French or Spanish (BA), with or without Secondary Education Certification, or in International Management (BSBA) or who have a minor in Ethnic Studies, French, German, Spanish, or International Studies. Priority consideration will be given to qualified students of any minority race. Recipients must have achieved at least a 2.8 cumulative GPA. Rupe-Stuart College Student Personnel & College Counseling Scholarship for Graduate Students This annual award is presented to students who are enrolled in the College Student Personnel or the College Counseling master s degree program. Recipients must demonstrate financial need, be in good academic standing and demonstrate good character and citizenship. This annual award will be given to different graduate students each year who demonstrate their focused intent to complete the master s degree coursework and required fieldwork within an acceptable period of time. Dr. Ray and Mrs. Marjorie Sunderland Study Abroad Scholarship For full time undergraduate students who have declared themselves a Teacher Education candidate (elementary or secondary) intending to complete the core subjects of Teacher Education for certification purposes. Applicants must desire to complete a student teaching assignment in an educational setting outside the United States. First preference is given to students studying in England, Scotland, or Wales. Student must complete the FAFSA to be considered for this scholarship. Each recipient must satisfactorily complete a study abroad student teaching assignment or forfeit all claims to this scholarship. Vision for Excellence in Social Work Scholarship This scholarship is presented to a senior receiving his/her degree from the Social Work Department. The student must possess professional standing within the department, a 2.5 overall cumulative GPA, and a 3.0 GPA in social work. The recipient must demonstrate leadership ability and a commitment to the profession of social work. Financial need is also taken into consideration. The scholarship will be awarded in the semester of the student s field practicum.
