2 Who are we? The Department of Employment The Department of Employment is responsible for national policies and programmes that help Australians find and keep employment and work in safe, fair and productive workplaces. Jobactive jobactive is the Australian Government s employment services system to help Australians into work and help employers find the right staff for their business. Online Engagement Solutions Team Responsible for online engagement through online or digital services and channels such as jobactive.gov.au employer and job seeker apps and our YouTube channel.

4 Background Australian JobSearch (now called jobactive) in existence for over 20 years Change has been constant during this time; not just in the way it looks but in the services it provides. Competition has increased with many new online job boards in the market offering similar services (Seek, CareerOne).

5 The main reason why I clicked on job active was that it was a government website,.gov is a trusted domain Innobreaker

6 The Project - Innobreak Employ a small number of university students during their summer break to provide different perspectives to our digital experiences. Students would preferably be from a diverse range of disciplines bringing different outlooks and thought processes and a non traditional and unusual approach to IT software design. Successful candidates would be hired on a part time basis at the APS1 entry level

7 The Project - Objectives 1. Generate new ideas that could deliver new or improved digital experiences to job seekers, employers and providers. 2. Inspire collaborative thinking and design approaches. 3. Bring new perspectives to existing digital services 4. Experiment with new technology and digital solutions 5. Uncover new talent for future engagement opportunities through internal or graduate programmes. 6. Provide opportunities for practical work experience.

However, jobactive did not appear at all after seven pages of scrolling. 11 Unless an individual looking for a job is looking specifically for jobactive it is unlikely that the user will come across the website/app. Innobreaker

12 The Project - What we learned Support job seekers becoming job ready Provide advice or examples for building resumes, interviews, physical presentation for interviews etc. Competition Had a broader range of casual work which required no experience Easier to find on Google and Bing Better use of Social Meida What we do well Harvest job option: targets a niche market Promote Government incentives; Relocation Scheme, Mature Age

16 Seek.com gives users the option to enrol into job ready courses. These courses are done at CIT but people have to pay to do these courses. Recently I found a website Alison.com. I completed my customer service diploma online at no cost. I think if the government could create a job ready course scheme completely free to people who are registered with mygov. this would be beneficial to people who work for the dole. It occurred to me that perhaps some people apply for jobs because they have to. Maybe they do not have the confidence in their skill set to perform the job when they get it. If the government does something like this it would be a nationally recognised learning centre and that the number of unemployment will decrease. Innobreaker

20 Reducing Assumptions Open honest and interactive feed back Real life experiences combined with user research enhanced the findings Generated comment and awareness of senior executive Cost effective Provided meaningful employment for four students First hand information from users using the site/app, not from executives telling us what they think people want/need Highlighting the flaws or drawbacks of the online environment directly to the people who can make those changes The students were not only working for us but were also active in the job market Presentation to Executive showcased the ideas from a user perspective APS 1 part time for 3 months Added to the innobreakers personal CV Developers have audience on hand testing from a user perspective not a systems perspective Messages are received first hand and can be discussed in detail with the ability to test back changes immediately They added comments on other sites or online support that user testing only on jobactive would not have taken into account Highlighted an innovative way of recruiting for testing purpooses No consultant fees, no SIM centre fees, no focus group fees Identified new and potential talent for our team
