Adelaide City Council - Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Employment Program (NB: Title of Programs correct at time of publication) Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff stories Sandra Bayet Program Assistant City Growth and Development Program Sandra joined Council on a six month Aboriginal Traineeship in She then gained permanent employment following the end of the traineeship and has now worked in various Programs across Council. Currently Sandra works in the City Growth and Development Program as the Program Assistant. She likes working and contributing to the population growth of the city. I enjoy working at Council as I like the diversity and possibilities it offers. I am also grateful to Council for giving me the opportunity to undertake further study and for their support for my work life balance. I feel respected and trusted, which enables me to contribute to Council s objectives. Lauren Bynder - Records Business Consultant Information and Communications Technology Lauren joined Council in early 2009 to learn more about government administration. Lauren s main role is to ensure record keeping is kept up-to-date and easy to do. A typical day includes software training, process analysis, issue resolution, strategic thinking, and working with a great team of people. Council has a knowledgeable and modern work force which I really appreciate. Our diverse business operations, unique teams and work experiences have enabled me to develop a really useful range of work skills. I m also supported in attending network opportunities, including the Aboriginal Employees Network. I have participated in formal learning that has helped me to remain marketable and I ve also had exposure to mentors from whom I have gained valuable experience and insight when problem solving. After all, not all learning can be gleaned from a text book.

Leata Clarke Reconciliation Officer City Community Leata joined Council in May 2010 as the Reconciliation Officer and was given the task of delivering and promoting Aboriginal cultural awareness. Leata s role includes providing executive support to Council s Reconciliation Committee and administering the Reconciliation Action Plan. She is also required to recruit and mentor Aboriginal trainees and graduates, assess reconciliation grants and organise the annual Lord Mayor s NAIDOC Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Flag Raising Ceremony and Morning Tea. I joined Council because the job offered variety and good money. I wanted to expand my knowledge and skills base. The team I work for is very supportive and nurturing of my potential. I find Council is a friendly place to work and is committed to reconciliation. Fredrike Owens Community Engagement Officer Strategy and Innovation In June 2013, Fredrike was successful in gaining contracted full time employment with Council, continuing on as a Community Engagement Officer. Fredrike s main role is to provide engagement support on low to medium risk projects. Fredrike also takes a proactive role in being the main support for Council s online engagement website. It s great to work in the Engagement Team as you usually the first to know about some of the exciting projects Council is undertaking. I ve learnt a lot of new and different skills in my short time at Council. Local Government is an excellent place to kick-start your career as there many possibilities and opportunities to further yourself. Robert Rundle Customer Service Officer Trainee City Community, Libraries Robert Rundle joined Council in June 2013, as a Customer Service Trainee in the libraries. Robert s main role is to assist library patrons in utilising library services and facilities such as, setting up library accounts, using an online Workflow system for the borrowing of books/cds and using the Pharos system for computer bookings. I applied for the traineeship to gain new knowledge and experiences with a greater chance at an interesting career. I enjoy working in a diverse environment with people from different cultures and ways of life. The reason I chose to apply for the council was because my family and I believed it would be a good place to build a career whilst doing an interesting job. Having spent time living regionally I really appreciate the number of people within the City Of Adelaide.

Tinesha Miller Administration trainee City Safety Environmental Health Tinesha joined Council on a 12 month Aboriginal Administration Traineeship in Tinesha s role includes supporting her team, answering the phone and directing enquiries, managing and maintaining files and records, using Microsoft Office and other computer programs while doing other administration duties. I was interested in this administration traineeship, as I thought this would be a great opportunity to get back into the workforce. Previously I had been out of paid work for two years, as a stay at home mother of two. The reason I choose this traineeship at the Adelaide City Council, was that I ve been told by others in the community, that working with Council is a good opportunity to get ongoing employment and benefits such as flexitime and leave that come with the job.

Waylon Miller Apprentice Public Realm Horticulture Waylon joined Council in March 2012 as an Aboriginal Apprentice in Horticulture with the Biodiversity Team. Waylon s role includes working outdoors, planting and weeding across the Park Lands and River Torrens. I applied for a job in Council because I enjoy working outdoors and learning about plants. I always wanted to work for Council because it provides job security, a qualification in Certificate III and flexible working hours so I have time for my footy training. Waylon resigned from Council to pursue other interests. Andrew J Wilson Trainee Records and Archives City Planning and Development Andrew joined Council in August 2011 as a trainee in Records and Archives based at Topham Mall. Andrew s main role includes assisting customers with copying records and the archival of various electronic records. I applied for the traineeship to further my skills and qualifications. Working in archives was a really interesting experience because I got to discover a lot about my family s and Adelaide s history. I also really enjoyed working as part of a team and I think I will miss that the most. Andrew has resulted in furthering his educational qualifications in the tourism industry.

Veronica Presley Trainee Customer Service Officer Active City, Aquatic Centre Veronica joined Council on a 12 month Aboriginal Traineeship in Veronica s main duties included serving customers by answering customer enquires over the phone and face to face, data entry, arranging memberships and enrolling swim school students into lessons. I was given the opportunity to undertake an Aboriginal Traineeship once I completed year 12 and I snapped it up straight away. During my 12-month contract at the Adelaide Aquatic Centre, I worked in different areas of Council, which was a real eye opener. I enjoyed my time at the Aquatic Centre and met so many new people. I would encourage anyone who is not 100% sure about what they want to do in life to complete a traineeship in something. It is useful in identifying what you are good at and which way you want to go in life. Veronica has resulted in casual employment with Council Aquatic Centre. Keisha Miller Trainee Administration Officer City Design Keisha joined Council on a 12 month Aboriginal Traineeship in Keisha s role included supporting her team; planning meetings; managing and maintaining files and documents; using Microsoft Office programs; and doing general administration duties. I was really interested in gaining employment in the administration field. I appreciated helping with two of the biggest projects happening (Victoria Square and Rundle Mall). I got to see what goes on throughout projects and everything that s involved with their planning and designing. I enjoyed meeting other staff through the Aboriginal Employee Network as it was very helpful being introduced to other Aboriginal employees and to hear their stories from working within the Council, the troubles they were facing, and what they enjoyed about their work. I really enjoyed participating in cultural events such as the Lord Mayor s NAIDOC Flag Raising Ceremony and Morning Tea, and volunteering for the NAIDOC March and Family Fun Day and the Cultural Tour. I enjoyed working with the City Design Team, everyone dressed to feel comfortable and they were all helpful, understanding and very well mannered. The best thing was coming into work every day and being surrounded by hard working and creative people in a comfortable atmosphere. Keisha has resulted in her furthering her educational qualifications in administration on a full time basis.

Managers Testimonials Fredrike Owen, Libraries Trainee, has great customer service skills and a positive approach to working in the libraries, which has endeared him to staff and public alike. Fred has been able to share some of his IT skills with other Customer Service Officers. In addition he has developed a good working relationship with the staff of the State Library. Fred's style of self-leadership and commitment to furthering his opportunities and education has seen him go beyond the role of trainee. I'm really excited for Fred to be able to continue on with Council. I found it to be very rewarding and would encourage any team to become involved in the Aboriginal Employment Program. Simon Murphy, North Terrace Library Centre Coordinator Andrew Wilson, Records and Archives Trainee, most of his time was spent working in the City Archives. His duties included retrieval of records stored in the Archives repositories that were requested by both internal and external customers, return of records to storage, updating location data in TRIM. Andrew also assisted with digital scanning and copying projects, and with TRIM data entry of archived documents. Andrew was a popular member of the team. Robert Thornton, Senior Archivist Veronica Presley, Customer Service Officer, is a very confident, enthusiastic and flexible employee who still works for Council as a casual at the Aquatic Centre. I think the Aboriginal Trainee Program is so worthwhile. Leata does an excellent job in administering it and provides first rate support for the trainees. I recommend everyone at Council to consider this program. Anne Kurzel, Team Leader Customer Support Keisha Miller, Trainee Administration Officer, was a really worthwhile employee and I strongly encourage everyone at Council to consider the Aboriginal Trainee Program. It was really pleasing to see that the experience for Keisha has resulted in her furthering her educational qualifications in administration on a full-time basis. David Chick, Manager City Design Tom Clarke, Horticulture Tradesperson, was a really valuable employee. He was always punctual and willing to learn, and he has a great work ethic. I urge everyone at Council to consider employing an Aboriginal trainee through this program. Frank Rossi, Group Team Leader Horticulture
