Text boxes will expand automatically while typing! preparation exchange/placement application process The placement process was not as hard as I expected it to be. As there are not many places available for Berlin (this might change every year..?), the most important thing is to write a good motivation letter. Then, as soon as the UU placed me in Berlin, there is not much difficulty to it. Keep the deadlines for the UU in mind and your fine (as there are not many procedural things for the Humboldt Universitat). counselling/support at home university All fine: as long as you write down the deadlines for certain applications in your agenda. academic preparation Not needed. language preparation I thought I was supposed to have a high german proficiency when arriving in Berlin, but this was not so much the case as I've feared. The humanities faculty of the UU offers German language courses in the first semester, so that I can advice. Though I found these courses pretty intense and quit them. Still, I was al right. finances Berlin is considerably cheaper than the Netherlands. Nevertheless, I should have saved more, as you just spend so much during your exchange. study/placement abroad period page 1 of 6

study programme/work plan (concerning content and organisational issues) Study programme is really fine. Except from a few English courses, the regular program of the faculty of Social Sciences offers German courses. Still then, you are often allowed to do your assignments in English. I think this depend on the subject matter (natural sciences and literature is much in German). Also, the level of the courses is really good. There is a special course program called Berlin Perspectives, which is for international students. Courses you can choose from this program are often though in English and has a Berlin/Germany focus, contentwise. academic quality of education/placement activities Very well, exept from the aforementioned Berlin Perspectives program. The courses within this program has a lower level, though that can also be the case as it's much taken by Erasmus Students who happen to not be so much focussed on studying whilst in Berlin. counselling/support at host institution/organisation All fine. They respond to s fairly quick and they inform you very well on what to do. transfer of credits Not applicable. student life welcome/orientation programme There was a welcome speech and a tour around the university. Then there's also an international club, of which I forgot the name. Different workshops/social events are organized for international students by this association. accommodation I found my accomodation via the internet. There's various Facebook groups that you can use and there's also a german kamernet called wggesucht.de. leisure/culture it s Berlin; do I need to say more? Of course, it's an amazing city and there's incredibly much to do. Be prepared that you spend so much more money on leisure than you'd anticipated! suggestions/tips If you want to do the Berlin Perspectives program, just choose one (maybe two) courses because they are contentwise not as spectacular as the names of the courses might indicate. Don't worry too much about the language. conclusions page 2 of 6

would you recommend this host organisation/destination to others? please explain Absolutely. The university is well structured and organized. There's always someone who can help you. But most of all, because Berlin has so much to offer. So I think I don't need to explain why, because people applying for Berlin will most of it do it because of the city, right? At least i did. do you have any additional advice or comments? No page 3 of 6

UU Report form ~ Erasmus faculty/college Social Sciences/Utrecht University level bachelor master PhD other name degree programme Pedagogische Wetenschappen destination city & country Berlin, Germany name host institution and/or Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin company/organization purpose Erasmus grant study/courses work placement departure date (dd/mm/yyyy) 15 / 10 / 2012 return date (dd/mm/yyyy) 31 / 03 / 2013 You are requested to write on the following topics. Text boxes will expand automatically while typing! preparation exchange/placement application process As preparation for my exchange application process, I first had to look at the list of universities that are partners of Utrecht University. My favorite place to go was Germany, although there was only one university which fit my study program. However, I was told that I could also apply for other universities which did not offer my own study program. Thinking about this possibility, I was looking on the websites of the different partner universities in Germany to see which courses I could take. Finally I decided to apply for the Humboldt University in Berlin. The application was not very difficult, I just had to sit for it and seriously think about finances and the different courses I would like to do, which of course was time consuming. counselling/support at home university I think that the counselling and support at University Utrecht was really good. They offered several informative presentations and I especially found the last one (before the departure) very helpful. Whenever I had questions, I could mail or go to the International Office of my faculty and I experienced everyone to be very friendly and willing to help. academic preparation For my exchange I did not need special academic preparation, but I tried to chose courses at my host university that could deepen my knowledge about certain things I had already learned. I think this was a good possibility to combine the exchange with doing something useful for my future. language preparation I did not need any language preparation, as German is my first language. finances I applied for an Erasmus grant which delivered 176 per month. Additionally I was receiving the Dutch study funding for students not living at home, I got some extra money from my parents and I used part of my own savings. study/placement abroad period page 4 of 6

study programme/work plan (concerning content and organisational issues) I was taking part in a study programme with Erasmus. I went to the Humboldt University in Berlin which is offering exchange places to students of the bachelor programme social sciences. This was not exactly my study path but I could also choose courses from other faculties, so I chose one course of social sciences, two courses from the psychological faculty and an Italian language course. academic quality of education/placement activities The acadamic quality of education was very good. The teachers were very experienced and were usually able to explain the content well. The books and articles used, were mostly helpful for understanding the topics. However, what I like better at UU is that the year is devided into four units with only two courses in each unit. This makes it more easy to focus on the different subjects. In Germany every course has only about three credit points, so it is often necessary to chose more than five courses in one semester. What I liked, was that the lectures at the host university were smaller than at Utrecht University. This was helping in the understanding of subject matters and students had the opportunity to ask many questions during or after the lecture. Most teachers knew the students by name, as the whole study programm is small. We had to give presentations in three of the subjects, which was supporting the academic development. counselling/support at host institution/organisation The counselling and support at the host institution was ok, but sometimes I (and also other Erasmus students) felt a bit lost and wished for more guidance. The students at the host institution who were in charge of the Erasmus students, were really friendly and helpful. However, my Erasmus coordinator was not really enthusiastic or talkative and did only give information when asked for it. This gave me the feeling that she was not very interested in the international students. transfer of credits First of all, it was quite difficult to find the amount of credits for each course in advance. This because they were not noted in 'Agnes' which is like Osiris for us. Furthermore, many courses did only give about 3 credits, but in some courses (Psychology) Erasmus students would get one extra credit for each course. This was quite confusing. As the semesters in Utrecht and Berlin overlapped (until ), I also needed to go back to Berlin for exams when I had already started the second semester in Utrecht. That is why I still haven't received my transcript of records and can't say anything about the transfer. student life welcome/orientation programme In October there were several welcome events and orientations organized for the new Erasmus students. This was really nice, as we could also make friends with international students studying in different faculties. Of course we could also get to know the campus better. Most of these events were organized by students who were working for the international office. accommodation The university offered accomodations for international students for a very good price (max. 250 euros). You needed to apply for this and to pay a fee in advance which would be paid back after your stay. However, I thought that this fee should be paid when they offered you a room opposed to in advance. As I was too late with the money, I needed to look for a room myself. This was not that easy but in the end I had a room in a flat share. I would advice any exchange student to apply for the accomodations offered by the university, as you can save page 5 of 6

much time and money that way. leisure/culture Berlin is a city full of culture and interesting activities. If you like museums, flee markets, fancy events or parties, everything is possible in this city. Especially the history of the Berlin wall still feels very vivid, as you see historical places and stories everywhere. As a student you pay reduced entries for museums. Moreover, students get a 'semester ticket' for the public transport in Berlin and Brandenburg from the university (for 227 ). With this ticket you can see a lot in and around Berlin, like for example Potsdam which is very nice to visit for its castles and parks. I can recommend to go to Berlin when it is nice weather, as everyone goes outside and the city becomes even more vivid than in winter. Furthermore, the university has diverse offers for students to do in their free time. These offers are really cheap. For example, I could do a sports course which only cost 15 for a whole semester. But there were also informative events or discussions around current topics organized. suggestions/tips Ask the students working at the international office of the host institution for help whenever you have a question! The university organizes some informative events for incoming students, but the international students are expected to be independent and contact the responsible persons when they have problems or questions. About the free time, I can suggest that you should make use of special offers for students. This is cheap and often these offers are very nice. conclusions would you recommend this host organisation/destination to others? please explain I can really recommend this host institution to others. You can not only chose from many interesting courses which may enrich your academic development, but the location also offers many activities in your free time. Berlin is a city which is very much affected by the German history, but also feels very international. As a student you can benefit from cultural events or just fun activities. do you have any additional advice or comments? I can only advice any student to use the opportunity to study a semester abroad. It is an opportunity that you will never have again this way and you can gain very special experiences and friends. page 6 of 6
