Signage Checklist 1. Location Yes No 1.1 Locate signs where they are clearly visible. 1.2 Position signs where the reader will not obstruct circulation paths. 1.3 Particularly important to position Directory / Floor Plans where the reader will not obstruct circulation paths as readers will need to pause and absorb information at these points. 1.4 Signs should be placed at eye level. The optimum height for viewing at eye level is mm above floor level. This also applies to Embossed Signs. 1.5 Signs that are projecting or being suspended from the ceiling must be positioned above head height at 2200mm from floor level. 1.6 Consistency of positioning crucial therefore signs should be at the same level on all Floors i.e. consistent positioning of Location Signs, Suspended Information & Direction Signs & Safety Signs 1.7 Position room number signs and names on the wall adjacent to the door handle and not on the door to avoid the door being opened whilst being read by touch. Number Signs should be at 1600mm from floor level. Wall mounted signs are recommended by N.C.B.I. However, Signs can be placed on door itself if no wall space is available.) 1.8 Signs that carry similar information on all Floors, such as Directories, should be placed in the same relative location on all floors. 1.9 Do not position signs directly onto External Glazing If Suspended Signs are used, consider wall-mounted signs incl. Braille / Embossed text. Prepared by J. Brady, Co. Librarian April

2. Sign Content: Language / Wording / Punctuation / Spacing 2.1 Use a hierarchical system for information, with a further breakdown of information provided as people progress along a route. When a decision has been taken about the hierarchy of information it should be applied consistently. 2.2 Language throughout should be Clear, Concise and Consistent. 2.3 Once a name has been chosen for a Service / a Room it should be used consistently. 2.4 Abbreviations should be avoided 2.5 Descriptive words such as Personnel or Accounts do not need to be qualified by use of Department or Division or Section. 2.6 Visually impaired people can recognize Numbers more easily than names. In addition, numbers can be larger than text without using more space. Use of Room Numbers for offices to be priority. 2.7 Use Punctuation sparingly. If Titles and/or Initials are required in Signage, full stops should be omitted between initials and avoided at the end of all sentences. 2.8 Legibility depends as much on the use of Space as selection of letterform. Consistent and wide inter - line Spacing essential. 2.9 Words per line: Max letters per line incl spaces OR Max. 2 3 words per line 2.10 Signs should have no more than five messages. Exception: Directories Yes No Prepared by J. Brady, Co. Librarian April

3. Surface finish, Colour and contrast/background Yes No 3.1 The surface of the sign should have a matt finish to reduce reflection and glare. 3.2 Black on white or white on black are good contrasting colours. Light coloured characters on dark backgrounds are preferred. 3.3 For very large text negative text is best. 3.4 The illumination of a sign should be considered. Signs must be visible at night. When a sign is illuminated, the light source must be shielded to prevent glare. 3.5 Do not place Suspended Signs against a light source e.g. at the end of corridors with windows or glass doors. 3.6 Avoid busy backgrounds. The background should enhance the visibility of the sign. 3.7 Letters and symbols should contrast with the signboard and the signboard should contrast with the background it is being attached to. 3.8 Use as few colours as possible and avoid colours that may be traditionally used in fire and safety signs (red/yellow/green/ blue). Note: Colours also fade which raises Maintenance costs. 3.9 In existing situations, if the colour of the signboard is similar to that of the background provide a contrasting border on the sign (25-50mm) 3.10 Be careful if using Colour to group words as it adds another level of required understanding. Prepared by J. Brady, Co. Librarian April

4. Typefaces and Sizes of Typefaces Yes No 4.1 Sign Lettering should ALWAYS use upper and lower case letters. 4.2 Letters used should be plain (Sans Serif) e.g. Arial, Avant Garde, Future, Akzidenz Grotesque and Helvetica Medium. 4.3 For Embossed Signs always use Helvetica Medium. 4.4 Never use italics or exaggerated typefaces on signs and the number of different typefaces and font sizes should be kept to a minimum 4.5 Justified text in signage should be avoided. 4.6 Size for Letters, Symbols, Braille and Embossed characters depends on Location and Reading Distance. 4.7 Guidance on size of Lettering (Lower Case letters)is as follows: Close up Reading: Min. Letter Hgt 15 25mm. Medium Range Reading: Min. Letter Hgt mm Reading Distance of 5 metres: Best Letter Hgt 290mm Reading Distance of 4 metres: Best Letter Hgt 240mm Reading Distance of 3 metres: Best Letter Hgt 180mm Reading Distance of 2metres: Best Letter Hgt 120mm Reading Distance of 1 metres: Best Letter Hgt 60m Symbols should be at least 100mm in Height overall. External directional sign Letters should be at least 75mm high. In general, a minimum letter height of 150mm is recommended at building entrances or house Nos Prepared by J. Brady, Co. Librarian April

5. Tactile finish Yes No 5.1 If a wall mounted sign has raised letters or Braille that are to be read, the tactile letters should be placed at a height of mm. 5.2 The letters should be raised 1.5mm and the edges of the raised characters should be slightly rounded. The recommended stroke width of each character is 1.5-2mm for a 15mm letter. Minimum Character Hgt of 15mm 50mm depending on space available. 5.3 Braille should be incorporated onto signs that are designed to be read close up. 5.4 Braille should enhance the embossed information but not replace it. 5.5 The use of embossed symbols at the beginning and end of Braille messages is important (e.g. arrows). 5.6 Reading an embossed sign in the vertical plane is not comfortable. If possible, the face of a sign should be inclined at degrees from horizontal as it provides a more natural position for the hand. 5.7 Embossed information should be considered for inclusion into standard safety signs. 6. Audible Signs Yes No 6.1 Electronic wayfinding systems herald a new era of independence for Visually Impaired. And greatly improve accessibility. The Passive Infra-Red detector (PIR) commercially available to be considered re suitability for new building. Prepared by J. Brady, Co. Librarian April

7. Symbols and Directional arrows Yes No 7.1 Well recognized symbols are often better than words e.g Can be larger than equivalent text message; many are internationally recognized and therefore overcome Language and Literacy difficulties; confusion can be created by use of Dual language. Success of symbols depends on simplicity, legibility and a good recognition factor. Use Symbols where possible and appropriate. 7.2 Always use the ISO 7001 Recommendation re Directional Arrow design. 7.3 Directional arrows should be placed on the side of the sign to which change of direction applies. 7.4 Messages on signs should be aligned to right or to left according to the direction indicated by the arrow. 7.5 Direction arrows indicating the need to go straight ahead should be placed on the top of the sign. Prepared by J. Brady, Co. Librarian April
