The acquisition of such understanding will develop the students skills in the collection and assessment of evidence, in the development of analytical arguments, and enhance their capability to reflect critically on the nature of human knowledge of the social world. The specific objectives are: To develop competence in the use and application of theoretical and conceptual orientations in sociology. To develop an understanding of the processes involved in comparative social change, industrialization and modernization. To develop an understanding of the social features of modern/post modern societies. To develop students ability to apply Sociological explanations to the social contexts in which they live and will work. To make students aware of the methodological bases of research methods used in sociology so that they can make informed choices as to their use. 1

2 To develop students knowledge of sources of data and develop their skills in the use of the main research methods used in sociology. To give students the opportunity to apply sociological concepts to practical situations. To incorporate staff research and scholarship within teaching. To give students some choice in the study of the more specialised areas of sociology. To offer where appropriate sociology modules to students from other courses. To develop student learning that will challenge, develop and engage students as well as enhance specific skills relevant to future employment. 11 MAIN LEARNING OUTCOMES The following reference sources were used to inform the development of the programme and its learning outcomes: the University s vision and core strategic aims, teaching and learning strategy current research or other advanced scholarship carried out by academic staff; subject benchmark statement for Sociology, national and University qualifications and credit frameworks; 11 K KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING OF SUBJECT The Major course provides opportunities for students to achieve and demonstrate the following learning: K1 To describe and examine a range of key concepts and theoretical approaches within sociology and evaluate their application. K2 To identify and examine a range of research strategies and methods and assess the appropriateness of their use. K3 To discuss ways in which sociology can be distinguished from other forms of understanding. K4 To recognise and examine the processes that underpin social change and social stability. K5 To recognise and analyse social diversity and inequality and some of their effects. K6 To recognise and evaluate the use of comparison in sociology. K7 To recognise and evaluate the relationships between sociological arguments and evidence in a range of contexts. K8 To examine the relationships between individuals, groups and social institutions and how they are by influenced by local, national and global structures and processes. K9 To apply sociology to a range of specialised areas. K10 To describe and discuss methodological, ethical and political issues in sociological research. This includes advice and information on: a) University Central Services b) Faculty specific information, and; c) Tailored course induction. The Social Sciences Faculty has adopted a holistic and continuing approach to induction which will include pre-registration tailored course induction with the Subject Director (Day 1) and with the Sociology programme (Day 2). Within Sociology, induction is an ongoing process and continuing throughout the first year for new students. It includes a strong emphasis on study skills and personal development for careers. Subject Director The Subject Director normally runs the seminar groups for the first six weeks of SOC102. This provides the Subject Director with the opportunity to build up a relationship with the students. 6

7 Studies Adviser Each student is supported by a Studies Adviser from the course team. The Studies Adviser has a pastoral role and students should keep Advisers informed of any difficulties or problems which may affect their academic progress. The Advisor of Studies is the student s representative at meetings where their academic progress is being reviewed. Studies Advisers meet students formally on a scheduled basis four times per year. If students have concerns related to their study of Sociology they may contact their Studies Adviser for further meetings. They may also contact their Module Coordinator or the Subject Director. Staff/Student Consultative Committee The purpose of this committee is to provide a forum where staff and students can meet to discuss matters of interest relating to Sociology and to provide students with the opportunity to put forward any issues raised by their year group. Two students are elected from each year (to include representation of part-time students). This is convened by the Subject Director and is attended by all teaching staff. The committee meets at least once per semester. Student Evaluation of Teaching Each module is assessed in each academic year through the university s formal student evaluation of teaching questionnaire. Students are required to complete this online before they can access their preliminary module results after the examination period each semester. This information is analysed centrally for Lecturers, Schools, Faculties and the University to assist with programme development. 14 CRITERIA FOR ADMISSION TO THE COURSE General Entry Requirements Applicants must satisfy the University s general entry requirements and minimum requirements for admission to the course which are: GCE A Level: minimum of 240 UCAS Tariff Points to include grades CC Irish Leaving Cert: to include BBCCC at Honours Level including English and Mathematics. (English and Mathematics may be at Ordinary Level). Access to Higher Education (55%), The European, International or Welsh Baccalaureate Or equivalent non-uk/roi/bac qualification. Subject-Specific Requirements There are no subject-specific requirements. 15 EVALUATING AND IMPROVING THE QUALITY AND STANDARD OF LEARNING AND TEACHING Quality and standards are monitored and maintained through the following mechanisms: Staff/Student Consultative Committee The purpose of this committee is to provide a forum where staff and students can meet to discuss matters of interest relating to the programme and to provide students with the opportunity to put forward any issues raised by their year group. Minutes are responded to by the Subject Committee and are also considered by the School Board. Module Evaluation and Subject Monitoring Students evaluate each module through an online structured questionnaire, as noted above. Feedback from module evaluation is used to assist course development and planning. 7

8 External Examiner The External Examiner makes a major contribution to the maintenance of standards. The External Examiner s key function is to ensure that the standard of the University s award is maintained and that students are treated fairly in the assessment process. The External Examiner therefore takes responsibility for monitoring examination papers for each module and scrutinises coursework and examination scripts. The University also expects Subject Committees to consult the External Examiner when proposing changes to the content, structure or regulations for a programme during its period of approval. Faculty Strategy The faculty Teaching and Learning Strategy informs the Sociology programme. The key aims of this strategy are to provide excellence in teaching foster and disseminate innovation and best practice. This strategy is co-ordinated through the Faculty Teaching and Leaning Committee. University Support The University has an active staff development unit and staff are encouraged to participate in the wide range of courses and opportunities provided. University Monitoring Procedures The continuous development of teaching programmes is supported by feedback drawn from periodic re-validation procedures, ongoing subject monitoring, and staff attendance at activities organized by the University and Faculty s Teaching and Learning Committee. Views of Graduates in the Annual National Student Survey In the 2011 UK National Student Survey of graduates, Sociology at Ulster was rated amongst the 4 departments with the highest levels of satisfaction (alongside Oxford, Edinburgh and UEA). Sociology won the University prize for teaching and learning in REGULATION OF STANDARDS Assessment rules Pass mark for course work and examination is 40%. Honours classification derives 100% from level 3 modules. External examiners External examiners make a major contribution to the maintenance of standards. They have responsibility for monitoring examination papers for each module and considering coursework and examination scripts. 17 INDICATORS OF QUALITY RELATING TO LEARNING AND TEACHING The QAA Institutional Review gave an excellent report of academic quality at the University. 8
