DATE WRTTEN/REVSED: October EDUCATONAL AMS OF THE COURSE The overall aims of the programme are to provide students with an understanding of central sociological theories and concepts and their application to global, national and local contexts within which they live and work. The acquisition of such understanding will develop the students skills in the collection and assessment of evidence, in the development of analytical arguments, and enhance their capability to reflect critically on the nature of human knowledge of the social world. 11 MAN LEARNNG OUTCOMES The following reference sources were used to inform the development of the programme and its learning outcomes: the University s vision and core strategic aims, teaching and learning strategy current research or other advanced scholarship carried out by academic staff; subject benchmark statement for Sociology, national and University qualifications and credit frameworks; The course provides opportunities for students to achieve and demonstrate the following learning. HONOURS DEGREE AWARD The Major/Minor award covers similar learning outcomes to the BSc (Hons) Sociology degree. Where the difference occurs is that students completing this programme will cover slightly less substantive sociology material. The focus of the Sociology Minor programme is for students to understand the world in which they live; therefore, the modules they will cover are the substantive modules in the degree.
2 11 NOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDNG OF SUBJECT Successful (Major) students will be able to: Discuss ways in which sociology can be distinguished from other forms of understanding. Recognise and discuss a range of central concepts and issues in a selection of related social science disciplines. Describe and examine a range of key concepts, theoretical approaches and debates within sociology. Be aware of a range of research strategies and methods and assess the appropriateness of their use. Recognise the importance of comparative analysis. dentify and evaluate different forms of explanation used in sociology. Recognise and evaluate the relationships between sociological arguments and evidence in a number of contexts. Recognise and examine the processes that underpin social change and social stability. Describe and examine the social feature of industrial and modern/post modern societies. Recognise and discuss social diversity and inequality and their effects. Be aware of sociology to some specialised areas. Examine the relationships between local, national and global social structures and processes. 9 12 STRUCTURE AND REQUREMENTS FOR THE AWARD The duration of the proposed course is 3 years in the case of full-time students, or not exceeding 7 years in the case of part-time students. The course is modular in design, with full-time students normally undertaking six modules per academic year and obtaining 18 modules in total to obtain an Honours degree. Students following a major pathway in Sociology therefore will take 4 Sociology modules per year (80 credit points), and two modules from the combination subject (40 credit points). Students following a minor pathway will take 2 Sociology modules (40 credit points) each year and four from the combination subject (80 credit points). Part-time students will normally study at the rate of three-four modules per academic year. The course design is compatible with the qualifications and credit framework (2002/03) with each module representing 20 credit points. n order to complete the award students both full and part-time need to achieve 360 credit points. The language of instruction is English. Duties of the Course Director also include oversight of the selection of applicants, the preparation of course publicity material, the allocation of advisers of studies, liaison with External Examiners and acts as Chair of the Course Committee. Regular meetings with an Adviser of Studies allocated to each student: Each student is supported by an Adviser of Studies. The Adviser of Studies has a pastoral role and students should keep Advisers informed of any difficulties/problems which may affect their academic progress. The Adviser of Studies is the student s representative at meetings where their academic progress is being reviewed. Advisers of Studies meet students formally at least once each semester. The opportunity to address general course concerns through the student/staff consultative committee A comprehensive induction programme for students Provision of Student, Subject and Module handbooks Provision of study skills within the modular structure Library and computer services induction sessions ndividual supervisor for research project Personal Development Planning in conjunction with their Seminar Tutor, students complete personal development plans to reflect on their progress throughout the year and develop their skills and abilities University Student Support Services Accommodation, Health, Counselling, Disability Support, Educational Guidance, The Support Fund Services; Nursery Career Development Centre provides advice and assistance in relation to future careers 10
11 nformation Services Department provides technical support and back-up for computing and library services Sport and Recreation Department nternational Office provides advice and support for overseas student Students Union Chaplaincy WebCT 14 CRTERA FOR ADMSSON Applicants must satisfy the University s general entry requirements or provide evidence of their ability to undertake the programme through the accreditation of prior experiential learning. Exemptions and Transferability: A number of colleges offer a two year part-time Certificate of Higher Education in Social Sciences. Candidates who successfully complete this Certificate are eligible to apply for admission directly onto the second year of the full-time BSc (Hons) Sociology/Sociology with Criminology/Sociology with Politics programme. 15 EVALUATNG AND MPROVNG THE QUALTY AND STANDARD OF TEACHNG AND LEARNNG Quality and standards are evaluated and improved through consideration of: Staff/Student Consultative Committee The purpose of this committee is to provide a forum where staff and students can meet to discuss matters of interest relating to the programme and to provide students with the opportunity to put forward any issues raised by their year group. Each year group meets with the Year Tutor and teaching staff. Minutes are responded to by the Course Committee and are publicised on the Faculty web pages. Module Evaluation and Annual Subject Monitoring Students evaluate each module through a free response form. Module Co-ordinators use feedback from module evaluation to contribute to course development. Course Directors use data from module evaluation in the completion of Annual Subject Monitoring Forms. Annual Subject Monitoring provides the opportunity for the review of the performance of Course and Subjects in the context of the School, Faculty and University objectives. External Examiners The University appoints at least one external examiner for each undergraduate Honours subject. External examiners play an important role in assuring the quality and standard of the University s awards. Their key functions are to ensure that the standard of the University s award is maintained and that students are treated fairly in the assessment process. The University also expects course committees to consult the external examiner when proposing changes to the content, structure or regulations for a course during its period of approval. 11
12 Faculty Strategy The faculty Teaching and Learning Strategy informs the Sociology programme. The key aims of this strategy are to provide excellence in teaching foster and disseminate innovation and best practice. This strategy is co-ordinated through the Faculty Teaching and Leaning Committee. University Support The University has an active staff development unit and staff are encouraged to participate in the wide range of course and opportunities provided. Staff in Sociology previously attended training in the use of WEB CT, JSC plagiarism software, and student assessment. University Monitoring Procedures The continuous development of teaching programmes is supported by feed-back drawn from periodic re-validation procedures, annual course monitoring, and Staff attendance at activities organized by the University and Faculty s Teaching and Learning Committee. Peer Observation of Teaching Staff took part annually in peer observation, as required by the Faculty Teaching and Learning Committee. This encouraged staff to adopt more supportive and compatible teaching and assessment methods and promote a more seamless and enriching learning experience for students. During 2008/9, Sociology staff will be taking part in a pilot study to evaluate the new Peer-supported review of Learning, Teaching and Assessment. Views of Graduates in the National Student Survey n the annual National Student Survey of graduates, sociology has had the highest levels of satisfaction in the University for the past three years. Nationally, in 2007, Sociology at Ulster came joint second in relation to satisfaction with teaching and learning and first in relation to satisfaction with assessment (Guardian, March 2008). 16 REGULATON OF STANDARDS Assessment rules The pass mark for the course, for individual modules, for coursework and for examinations is 40%. The following overall percentage bands will be used as a basis for determining the classification of the honours degree First class 70%-100% Second class - Upper division 60%-69% Second class - Lower division 50%-59% Third class 40%-49% 12
13 External Examiners There is one external examiner. External examiners are academic subject or professional experts appointed from outside the University. Their key functions are to contribute to the assurance of the standards of the award and the fair treatment of students. They are involved in the moderation and approval of assessments and the moderation of the marking undertaken by internal examiners. 17 NDCATORS OF QUALTY RELATNG TO TEACHNG AND LEARNNG One third of staff members are accredited members of the Higher Education Academy One third of staff hold a professionally recognised teaching qualification and new members of staff are required to undertake such a qualification. One member of staff served on QAA Benchmark review panels in One member of staff sits on the Higher Education Academy s Subject Centre Advisory Board to advise on matters of strategy and policy in promoting learning and teaching. Research The majority of staff members in Sociology are involved in research, with interests which include: dealing with the past, regional economic development, media representation, governance and participation, counselling, racism and pregnancy loss. These interests clearly emerge from central concerns of the Sociology programme and in turn feed into developments in teaching content in the modules of the programme. 13
