3 Discovery School Professional Dress Code Discovery School is defined by its teaching and learning excellence and innovation; and equally by its warmth and inclusivity. We are committed to ensuring that each student s one chance is their best chance. At Discovery School we know that people thrive in positive and happy environments in which there are clear and agreed expectations and boundaries. It is this which shapes our ethos and culture and underpins our policies and procedures. All members of the Discovery School family - teachers, students, technicians, and admin staff - are governed by our policies. They are written with this in mind. We all abide by the same codes of conduct and act respectfully to those we work with. Aims and Rationale A work dress code is a set of standards that organisations develop to help provide their staff with expectations about what is appropriate to wear to work. As all members of the school community are governed by our policies and because we have a coming to work rather than going to school ethos at Discovery School, it is appropriate that we have a work dress code suitable for both students and staff. Therefore, the dress code at Discovery School for all is a professional dress code. The Discovery School professional dress code exists to allow all members of the Discovery School to project a professional image whilst still being comfortable and safe in the workplace. Professional Dress Code The standard of our dress code is professional work-wear. As casual clothing is not suitable for the Discovery School learning environment, the following expectations will help you determine what is appropriate to wear Clothing that reveals too much cleavage, your back, your chest, your feet, your stomach or your underwear is not appropriate for a place of business. Torn, dirty or frayed clothing is unacceptable. All seams must be finished. Any clothing that has words, terms, or pictures that may be offensive to other members of the school community is unacceptable. Professional Dress for Work This is a general overview of appropriate professional attire. Items that are not appropriate are listed too. The list tells you what is generally acceptable as professional attire and what is generally not acceptable attire. No dress code can cover all contingencies so students and staff must exert a certain amount of judgment in their choice of clothing to wear to work. If you experience uncertainty about acceptable, professional attire for work, please speak with the Principal. Trousers and suits Tailored trousers, skirts and suits in wool, wool blend or manmade fibres are acceptable. Inappropriate pants include jeans, canvas trousers, sweatpants, exercise pants, shorts, leggings, and other form-fitting pants. 3

4 Skirts, Dresses and Skirted Suits Tailored dresses, skirts and skirted suits in wool, wool blend or manmade fibres are acceptable. Dress and skirt length should be at a length at which you can sit comfortably in public. Short, tight skirts that ride halfway up the thigh are inappropriate for work. Mini-skirts, shorts, sun dresses, beach dresses, and spaghetti-strap dresses are inappropriate for work. Shirts, Tops, Blouses and Jackets Tailored shirts/ blouses in cotton, cotton blend or manmade fibres are acceptable. Plain sweaters and cardigans in wool, wool blend or manmade fibres are acceptable. Suit jackets or sport jackets are also acceptable attire. Inappropriate attire for work includes tank tops; midriff tops; shirts with potentially offensive words, terms, logos, pictures, cartoons, or slogans; halter-tops; tops with bare shoulders; sweatshirts, hoodies and t-shirts. Shoes and Footwear Conservative, sturdy leather shoes are acceptable for work and are required in the engineering, science and technology areas for safety reasons. Flashy trainers, sandals, flip-flops, and any shoe with an open toe are not acceptable. Coats A warm, weather proof coat should be worn to school. Coats should be removed in learning sessions. Jewellery and Makeup Makeup should be tasteful and appropriate for a professional environment. The wearing of jewellery in an engineering environment is a health and safety risk. Therefore, it should not be worn at all or kept to a minimum e.g. a plain ring, one pair of plain earrings and no visible body piercing. Hats and Head Covering Hats are not appropriate in the work place. Head Covers that are required for religious purposes or to honour cultural tradition are allowed. As both students and staff have made an informed choice to join the Discovery School family they will already have an allegiance to the high standards which help Discovery School stand out from the rest, including the agreed standards of professional dress. However, if clothing fails to meet these standards, the individual will be asked politely not to wear the inappropriate item to school/work again. If the problem persists, the offender may be asked to go home to change clothes and will receive a verbal warning for the first offense. Progressive disciplinary action, in line with Discovery School policy and practice, will be applied to both students and staff if dress code violations continue. 4
