Replace: The entire selected clip from the Project Library is replaced with your entire selected video clip from the Event Browser. Replace from Start: Replaces entire selected clip in the Project Library with video of an equal length from the Event Browser, starting from the beginning of your selection (where you place your cursor) in the clip from the Event Browser. Replace from end: Replaces entire selected clip in the Project Library with clip of an equal length from the Event Browser, working backward from the end of your clip selection in the Event Browser. Replace at Playhead: Replaces selected clip in the Project Library with clip of equal length from the Event Browser, placing the beginning of you re the clip you selected in the Event Browser at the playhead that you placed in the clip in the Project Library. Insert: Insert will split the video at the playhead and insert the selection from the Event area. The length of your project will change to reflect the added clip. Audio Only: Drag the selected clip over a video clip in your project, and then choose Audio Only from the menu that appears. A green sound effect icon appears below the video clip where you placed the audio. NOTE: You can also add just the audio from an Event clip by holding down the Command and Shift keys as you drag the clip to your project. Cutaway: You can add a video clip as a cutaway, pasting a clip over a related clip in your project. The clip you paste will cover over the same number of frames in
12 your original video clip as are in the clip you paste. The new cutaway will appear above the original video clip in the Project Library. The grayed out area that shows in the original clip are the frames that are covered up. Using cutaways is an editing techniques, great for showing someone s reaction to what s happening, showing the action as people are talking about it, or covering moments you don t like in clips that are otherwise good. Picture in Picture: You can insert video that plays in a small widow on top of another video clip. Green screen: You can record video in front of a green backdrop, and then electronically cut out the subject, and then place that video into a video clip in your project. The background can be a solid color or an animated clip. Cancel: Cancel the placement of the video clip. Notes *Explanations of the options in the share menu: To share your movie with others, you have to export them out of imovie using one of the options in the Share menu. itunes: If you want to download and view one of your imovie projects to your ipod or iphone, you first need to send it to itunes. When you send your project to itunes, imovie allows you to create one or more movies of different sizes, depending on the size of the original media that s in your project. The mediumsize movie is best for viewing on your ipod or iphone idvd: You can send your finished movie directly to idvd, and then create a professional-quality DVD featuring your movie. To send your movie to idvd: Choose Share > idvd. Your movie is rendered efficiently and sent to idvd. idvd opens with your movie in a new idvd project. You can change the DVD menu theme, edit the menus, add more movies, add photo slideshows, or simply
13 burn your movie to a DVD immediately. Note: If you want to add your video project to an idvd project already in progress, send it to the Media Browser and select the largest movie size available. imovie renders your project and then makes it available to all Apple applications that can access the Media Browser, including idvd, iweb, and GarageBand. Media Browser: If you want to use any of your finished imovie video projects in iweb, GarageBand, idvd, Pages, Keynote, or another Apple application, you can send a project to the Media Browser and then access it by opening the Movie window or the Media button in the application you want to use it with. Sending a project to the Media Browser for use with idvd is useful if you want to add your movie to an idvd project already in progress. Otherwise, you can use your movie with idvd more quickly and easily by sending it directly to idvd. Your movie opens in idvd, ready to burn to a DVD disc. This option will also place a copy of the exported movie in the Project Library in imovie 09. Click on the Project Library tab to view. YouTube: You can publish your imovie project directly to YouTube, an independent website that freely hosts videos by its community members. To post to YouTube, you must have a YouTube account. MobileMe Gallery: To share your movies over the Internet, you can publish your imovie projects directly to your MobileMe Gallery. After you publish a movie, send its Internet address to your friends and family so that they can view your movie. To publish to your MobileMe Gallery, you must have an active MobileMe subscription. If you don t already have a MobileMe subscription, you can sign up for one at the MobileMe website at There is a free 60 day trial. Export Movie: If you want to save the current version of your movie before you edit it, or if you simply want to create a copy you can access on your desktop or in any Finder folder, you need to export it as a movie. Exported movies are identical to the movies that are rendered when you share with itunes or the Media Browser, but they are accessible through the Finder and can be used by any application that doesn t have access to movies in itunes or the Media Browser, such as Mail.
14 Export Using QuickTime: Use Export Using QuickTime when you want to bypass the default export options and set your own video compression formats such as H.264, AAC, Linear PCM, Apple Lossless, Qualcomn PureVoice, and more. You can use the option button in the dialog box to set your own Movie Settings. Export Final Cut XML: Use Export to Final Cut XML to export to FCP. Then, in Final Cut, choose Import > FCP XML from imovie to import project.
