12. Relevant QAA subject benchmark/ Professional, statutory and regulatory body guidelines No specific benchmark statement is available for this M level programme. 13. Date of production of specification January December Date of programme review 2018/ Educational aims of the programme i.e what is the purpose of the programme and general statements about the learning that takes place over the duration of the programme The aim of the programme is to enable students to gain an advanced knowledge of major approaches to linguistic aspects of culture; to enable students to understand the complex relationships between language and cultural diversity; to enable students to understand and analyse the use of language in urban multi-cultural contexts in a globalized world and how personal and socio-cultural identities such as gender, age and ethnicity are shaped, both institutionally and on a local level of everyday social interaction; to provide students with an M-level competency in the research skills and knowledge relevant to further study in empirical and applied linguistics; to prepare them to conduct a PhD research project in the students chosen field, to foster the capacity for critical analysis, independent judgement and communication of scientific knowledge; to enable students to draw, as appropriate, on non-linguistic work in the humanities and social sciences, and to participate in inter-disciplinary dialogue. To that end, the programme will address the following learning outcomes so that upon completion successful students will be able to provide informed background knowledge in situations where culturally diverse people interact and communicate with each other; demonstrate a theoretical and analytical understanding of how language and cultural diversity are interrelated; assess and evaluate issues of cultural diversity, intercultural communication and understanding through analysis of language use; diagnose how cultural diversity is manifested in language use and how an awareness of culturally specific uses of language can contribute to successful cross-cultural communication; demonstrate the ability to formulate research questions and select appropriate research methods and/or identify existing data sets appropriate for answering those questions; understand and combine two or more fields of applied linguistics, such as sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, linguistic anthropology, language policy, language education, first & second language acquisition, discourse & text analysis and others; relate debates in linguistic scholarship to wider issues in the humanities and social sciences; conduct independent linguistic research, including the ability to review published literature critically, identify research problems, handle data, interpret results, and write up findings in a way that it is consistent with normal principles of research ethics;

use both quantitative and qualitative methods of socio-cultural linguistic data collection, and as necessary, analyse, interpret, and present the resulting data, and evaluate applications of those methods by other researchers in other contexts; exhibit the analytical, numerical, literacy, communication, and computer skills to enable them to undertake critical research and be able to apply those transferable skills to subsequent work in a wide range of potential occupations. 16. Educational objectives of the programme/programme outcomes (as relevant to the SEEC Credit Level Descriptors) The programme provides opportunities for students to develop and demonstrate knowledge and understanding and skills in the following areas: The programme provides a knowledge and understanding of the following: Knowledge and understanding These are achieved through the following teaching/learning methods and strategies: major theoretical debates in socially and culturally related linguistics; theories of culture and its relationship to language; quantitative and qualitative methods of data collection and analysis; ethical considerations in research design, execution, and dissemination; issues, theories, concepts and descriptive and analytic frameworks in at least two core areas of applied linguistic theory: sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, linguistic anthropology, language policy, language education, first & second language acquisition, discourse & text analysis; a critical awareness that can undertake analysis of complex, incomplete or contradictory areas of knowledge, communicating the outcome effectively. Acquisition of the various skills is achieved through a combination of lectures and seminar discussions, which are informed by students weekly prior study of selected literature in the field. Use of IT-based materials will be made where applicable. Throughout the programme, students will be encouraged to undertake independent reading both to supplement and consolidate what is being taught/ learnt and to broaden their individual subject knowledge and understanding of the subject. They will also be encouraged to participate in the full array of linguistic research seminars offered in the College, and will be allowed, as appropriate, to register for one module outside linguistics in order to enhance their knowledge and understanding of relevant non-linguistic work in the humanities and social sciences, and their ability to participate in interdisciplinary dialogue. Assessment: Knowledge and understanding will be assessed through coursework essays, projects and/or class presentations, and

a written examination, as well as through the dissertation. Intellectual skills: Students develop the ability to Skills and other attributes These are achieved through the following teaching/learning methods and strategies: synthesise information in a manner that may be innovative, utilising knowledge or processes from the forefront of the discipline; handle the demands of reading across disciplines; critically evaluate research, advanced scholarship and methodologies and argue alternative approaches; conduct independent research. Intellectual skills are developed throughout the programme, in particular through the setting of problem-solving tasks, classroom discussions, practice in applying concepts both orally and in writing and the analysis and interpretation of language data. The skills will be demonstrated particularly in the coursework essays, the student presentations, the written examination and the dissertation, as well as through written tasks. Assessment: The variety of assessment methods employed places great emphasis in the student s ability to demonstrate the various skills through the production of coherent written and oral responses either to problems or tasks set. The combination of assessment methods (oral presentations, essays, written examination, dissertation) provides an appropriate vehicle for the demonstration of these skills. Practical skills: Students develop the ability to: apply appropriate research designs and methodologies to research questions; collect, code, analyse and interpret qualitative and quantitive data; retrieve, synthesise, and effectively present information from a variety of sources; discuss and negotiate contradicting These are achieved through the following teaching/learning methods and strategies: The skills will be acquired throughout the course, through tasks, classroom discussions, student presentations, the production and critical reflection upon coursework essays, as well as the dissertation and written examination. In the modules diverse theories and methods will be discussed and applied

positions. systematically. This includes theoretical and practical implications of different theories and approaches in the study of cultural diversity as reflected in language. The research method modules enable students to develop their ability to work responsibly and reflexively. Assessment: The skills will primarily be assessed through coursework essays and the dissertation, and through oral presentations. There will also be a written examination. Generic/transferable skills: ability to use full range of learning resources; ability to competently undertake research tasks with minimum guidance; manage time and resources in an independent research project; ability to prepare well-focused presentations using appropriate technical aids; ability to communicate ideas effectively, orally and in writing; a wide range of IT-skills M-level numeracy skills These are achieved through the following teaching/learning methods and strategies: Generic/transferable skills are developed through the teaching and learning programme outlined above. The skills are developed in particular through class discussion and smallgroup teaching in all modules, through written work and feedback thereon. The need to acquire those skills is inherent in producing assessed coursework, and applies to all modules. Assessment: These skills are not individually measured; their assessment is subsumed in varying degrees within the assessment of all activities within the programme. 17. Statement of how the programme has been informed by the relevant subject benchmark statement(s)/professional, statutory and regulatory body guidelines There is no specific benchmark statement relevant to this MA programme. However, the programme combines elements of both language and linguistic studies and thus constitutes an extension and specialisation at an advanced level of BA degrees in (Applied) Linguistics and Languages. Moreover, the programme is informed by ESRC Post-graduate Research Training Guidelines F8 ((Applied) Linguistics). In addition to knowledge and understanding of linguistic theories and methods pertinent to social aspects of language(s), general intercultural awareness will be developed. With its

emphasis on culturally diverse contexts, the programme thus contributes to the applications of linguistics to the solution of real-world problems (ESRC, PGR Training Guidelines, F8:3.2). For subject-specific training in applied linguistics, the ESRC specifies the principled gathering, handling and interpretation of data sets using [both hypothesis-testing and experimental, ethnographic and non-hypothesis-driven approaches (F8:3.1) in the following areas: the theory and practice of language learning and teaching, language in education, (critical) discourse analysis, the development of corpora for computational treatment and other kinds of data sets, anthropological approaches to language, the development of language policies (F8:3.2). These are covered in the individual modules offered in the programme. 18. In cases of joint honours programmes please provide a rationale for the particular subject combination, either educational or academic n/a Which is the lead department and/or School?

The only exception to this will be if there are changes made by Professional, Regulatory or Statutory Bodies that are noted to this programme. The full-time and part-time programmes of study are given in the table above. Thematic core module Language, identity & culture This module offers an overview of theories of language and culture, thereby creating a bracket for more specific thematic modules. Drawing on cross-fertilizations of linguistics, anthropology and cultural studies, it critically examines the interrelationships between language, identity and culture at the level of both theorizing and empirical work. The module will demonstrate the role of language in the production and reproduction of social and cultural practices and relations. To do so, it will look into case studies of language use in a variety of communication contexts ranging from small group to organizational and mediated communication. It will also refer to studies from

different cultures, societies, speech and language communities. Research methods modules Researching linguistic diversity This module covers methods for research on spoken language data, including basic procedures such as transcription, linguistics techniques (elicitation of linguistic structures, grammaticality assessments), basic sociolinguistic methods (ethnographic fieldwork, trans-contextual and micro-analysis), techniques of endangered language recording and preservation. Digital methods for text and discourse analysis The first part of the module reviews approaches to the computer-based study and processing of language, and introduces essentials of corpus-based text-analysis. The second part discusses methods in the study of computer-mediated communication, including issues of sampling, collection of log-based data, software-aided techniques of analysis, ethical issues and digital ethnography. Optional modules Optional modules fall into the following thematic focal areas: Linguistic Diversity, Discourse, Text, Interaction and Identity and Teaching and Diversity. Modules can be combined according to the student s interests, with the expectation that the chosen modules will normally be chosen from at least two different focal areas. Moreover, there is the possibility of taking one module outside linguistics. Linguistic diversity This thematic area engages with aspects of global linguistic diversity. The modules offer overviews of the world s languages, examine sociolinguistic processes in multilingual societies, and focus on how cultural diversity is encoded in linguistic structure. Modules include: World Languages and Linguistic Typology; Translation; Language Contact; Bilingualism and Black Englishes; Cultures in Grammar; Arabic Sociolinguistics; Language Politics in the Middle East. Discourse, text, interaction and identity This area focuses on how human communication is shaped by the dynamic interaction of linguistic content and the social, artistic and intellectual contexts in which speaking and writing take place. Modules in this area draw on scholarship in discourse and conversation analysis, literary studies, digital text-analysis and sociolinguistic theory. They include: Linguistic Approaches to Narrative Analysis; Theory of Digital Texts; Language and Power; Medical Discourses; Directed Research in the Digital Analysis of Literature.

Teaching and Diversity The modules in this thematic area explore relationships between cultural and linguistic diversity and processes of teaching and learning, looking at how social and linguistic diversity shapes classroom interaction and teaching policies, but also how diversity itself may become a topic in learning and teaching. Topics include: Language Practices in Multiethnic and Multilingual Classrooms; English for Academic Purposes; English for Speakers of Other Languages. Further optional modules, both in and outside of the department, have been added to the original list of optional modules, as they are relevant to the programme/meet the learning aims and outcomes of the programme and may be of interest to students. Other level 7 modules in Linguistics may be permitted, subject to approval by the Programme Director.

20. Marking criteria The College generic marking criteria for assessment of postgraduate work apply to the assessment of the programme. Department-specific supplementary assessment criteria will be used for the dissertation. 21. Particular features of the programme which help to reduce the barrier experiences by disabled students and ensure that the programme is accessible to all students who meet the entry requirements. The Buildings and classrooms where the programme will be taught are accessible to people with disabilities, the material supporting the programme can be provided in an electronic form if necessary, special arrangements can be made for students with special needs. Structure: The programme is offered part-time as well as full-time. Publicity and programme handbook: These clearly communicate the key skills that will be required during the programme, the content of each module, the intended teaching methods to be used and the module s status (core/compulsory/optional). Teaching methods: A wide range of teaching methods are utilised including: handouts in alternative formats, electronic resources placed on the website. Assessment: Advice has been taken from the Equality and Diversity Department to ensure assessment methods do not unfairly discriminate against students with disabilities. The College s Special Examinations Arrangements Committee (SEAC) considers request for adjustments to assessment to take account of learning and/or physical disabilities. Module outlines specify the assessment methods that will be used and explain that SEAC will need to be notified about requests for alternative assessment methods. The form that the alternative assessment will take has been specified for each module in advance. Feedback: Feedback on programmes is regularly collected from students, including information from students with disabilities about their learning experiences. The information collected is used towards the on-going development and improvement of programmes.
