Host Name: While the name is changeable to administrator s favorite, the use of PROLINUX can help you to memorize how you create your own FQDN (Fully Qualified Domain Name). Domain Name: The domain name of PROLINUX registers to the internet or the domain name of the internet ISP. It is help you to memorize how you create your own FQDN (Fully Qualified Domain Name). FQDN = Host Name + Domain Name. For Example: If the FQDN = we can set the Host Name and Domain Name as: Host Name = www Domain Name = abc-isp.com 32

33 IP Status: This setting determines how PROLINUX obtains an IP address in your LAN. - Automatically (DHCP): This is the default setting. It is not necessary to set the IP address manually. 1. If there is a DHCP server in your LAN, such as Router, IP Share, or AP. They can assign a specific IP to PROLINUX. 2. All other settings will be assigbed by the DHCP server such as: Primary DNS, Slave DNS, LAN IP address, Subnet Mask, and Gateway. 33

34 - Manual Configuration: If a DHCP server is not present in your LAN then you must manually input an IP address and all other settings. 1. Primary DNS: This is the external DNS server s IP address which will allow PROLINUX connect to the internet. 2. Slave DNS: Performs the same function as the Primary DNS. 3. LAN IP Address: The IP address of PROLINUX. 4. Subnet Mask: Normally Gateway: The address of the Gate which is placed at the junction of the LAN and internet such as Router, AP, or IP Share. They serve as the communication between the internet and the LAN PPPoE Dial-up Setting If you are using an ADSL dial-up network connection with a dynamic IP, PROLINUX can also support ADSL dial-up connections. Enter the user name and password provided by the ISP to acquire an ADSL Dynamic IP. 34

35 4.2 Account Management PROLINUX is a multi-user and multi-task operating system and requires management on user accounts. To achieve a more efficient and flexible system of management, different file permissions are set to different accounts and groups. Note: 1. Use only the English alphabet (accounts may differ in Upper case or Lower case) and digits when creating a new account. (a..z, A..Z, 0~9, and _, are valid characters) 2. The initial character of the account must not be a digit. Important Notice! The Windows system recognizes the account name as the same whether it is upper or lower case, but Peter and peter is recognized as different accounts in a Linux system. That means the File server (Network Neighborhood) will recognize them as the same account causing an abnormal login to happen. While the FTP server recognizes them as the same account. To avoid this complex issue to happen, please add new accounts with extreme care on the case sensitive matters, ie: name accounts differently New Account On every new user account on PROLINUX, each account is able to access File Server and FTP servers unless otherwise disabled by administrator. You may set the Data Quota Size limitation on the accounts, and restrict specific accounts to access user s homepage, File server (Network Neighborhood) and FTP server. 35
