2 Job description Post: Division: Grade: Responsible to: Professor in Health Management and Leadership Health Services Research and Management Professor Head of Division This is an exciting new appointment made jointly with City University London, School of Health Sciences, and The King s Fund. It brings together one of the leading academic institutions in health sciences teaching and research with the leading independent foundation doing research on health care in England. We are keen to make an appointment in any area of Health Management and Leadership research, with a particular interest in clinical leadership. The key areas of responsibility will be: Lead a programme of internationally recognised research in the area of Health Management and Leadership in collaboration with The King s Fund Play a prominent role in delivering excellent undergraduate and postgraduate education Contribute to enterprise activities in the School and other activities of The King s Fund Through academic and operational leadership of the School, Department and Research Centre(s), enhance the reputation of City University London nationally and internationally Support the reputation of The King s Fund through high quality relevant research. 2
3 Main Responsibilities Research Lead the advancement of scholarship in the field of Health Management and Leadership through high impact publications (including joint publications with the Fund) and other research activity at an international level; Lead on submissions for funded research in collaboration with The King s Fund, colleagues within the school and university and other collaborators; Effectively disseminate research findings to a wide range of audiences to maximise the impact on policy and practice; Enhance the research culture in the School and The King s Fund to contribute to the development of research activities and research teaching Develop opportunities for collaboration to further enhance research activity across the School of Health Sciences and rest of the University Supervise doctoral and, where relevant. post-doctoral students Facilitate interdisciplinary research across the University and with relevant external research groups Develop research with academic and commercial collaborators nationally and internationally Education Contribute to the development and delivery of excellent undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, using educational methods that foster a positive learning environment and highly-satisfied students offer specialist supervision and tutorials to post graduate students; Contribute to the development of King s Fund staff and taught programmes; Initiate and contribute to new programme design and seek to improve current programmes Use a range of monitoring and evaluation techniques to assess the effectiveness of course delivery and contribute to quality assurance and quality enhancement; Supervise undergraduate and postgraduate student; Participate in administrative functions, committees and meetings within the School, University and The King s Fund as appropriate; Undertake any other relevant duties as reasonably required and agreed with the Deanery. Enterprise Contribute to enterprise activity in the School. Enterprise is likely to include, as appropriate, high level Continuous Professional Development, consultancy and the commercialisation of Intellectual Property through spin-in and spin-out businesses; Identify, develop and exploit enterprise links with the professions and business; 3
4 Identify business and consultancy opportunities that could be jointly pursued with The King s Fund. Strategic Management and Leadership Promote and maintain a professional profile through research excellence and academic quality provision that is an exemplar to others; Provide academic leadership within and across the specialist field of knowledge (including via external networks); Interact with colleagues on academic matters via collegiate committees and through governance structure of the University; Interact with senior colleagues at The King s Fund on the development of a strategic research programme. Contribution to the aspirations of the University, School and The King s Fund Promote the reputation and profile of the University, the School and The King s Fund through participation in academic activities beyond the University; Enhance the University s and The King s Fund s reputation and profile within the professions and with academic, health care professional and government and regulatory bodies Participate in the academic and operational leadership of the School and the University. Build and develop relationships within the School, the University, the King s Fund and externally in the area of Health Management and Leadership; Promote to external agencies the opportunities provided by the research and educational capabilities of the department and The King s Fund; Promote opportunities for engaging the Department with the broader community 4
5 Person Specification Post: Division: Grade: Responsible to: Professor in Health Management and Leadership Health Services Research and Management Professor Head of Division Qualifications Knowledge Experience Good first degree and PhD A world-leading breadth and depth of knowledge in Health Management and Leadership A world-leading research reputation Established links with international individuals and organisations in Management and a track record of obtaining research funding from Research Councils and other funding bodies Demonstrated ability to deliver a complex programme of research requiring extensive collaboration with others Experience of supervising doctoral and post-doctoral students to completion Significant experience of delivering excellent education at undergraduate and postgraduate levels An understanding of the role of enterprise and a record of enterprise achievement. Strong and effective academic leadership experience within a university or similar academic environment General Skills Advanced communication and interpersonal skills appropriate for a senior academic role and ability to quickly gain and maintain credibility with senior leaders Demonstrable evidence of effective management and collaboration with staff and students Strong contribution to the strategic development of research, enterprise and education Ability to act as a role model and to encourage and develop early-career academics 5
6 Ability to enthuse students and to encourage them to engage in high levels of scholarship and achievement, to obtain graduate-level employment and to leave City as satisfied alumni and ambassadors. 7 Salary and Conditions of Service The salient features of Conditions for Academic staff are as follows: The salary will be negotiable. Annual Leave is 30 days, plus 8 statutory and 4 additional days during the Christmas holiday period. You will have the option to join the Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS). Employees electing to join make a 6.35% contribution from their annual salary. All offers of appointment are subject to the University receiving satisfactory references and medical clearance. There is a probationary period of up to one year. Further Information We operate a smoking policy, which limits smoking to designated areas. The University offers an excellent pension scheme, generous leave allowance, season ticket loan, a good working environment, and access to our student fitness and social facilities.
