Purpose of the College of Education, Health and Human Development The College of Education, Health and Human Development includes national and international research leaders in multiple domains of educational study. We have a commitment to world-class research, teaching, and professional development in Education and Human Development through our four Schools (Educational Studies & Leadership, Teacher Education, Sport and Physical Education and Health Sciences), UC Education Plus, and a range of research projects and teams. Role, Purpose and Scope The role of Associate Professor is to: provide valuable teaching services within the University and undertake high quality research, whilst maintaining relevant professional practice and administrative requirements, and Associate Professors are well known in their field and are developing an international profile. The role of Associate Professor involves a research/scholarship record including papers in high impact international journals, or other appropriate outlets. Associate Professors typically show significant academic leadership, and are likely to have developed a research group within their specialised field. It is expected that Associate Professors are able to evidence effective supervision of Masters Thesis and PhD students, link their research/scholarship/creative work to their teaching and develop papers and courses inspired by their research. Associate Professors have clear evidence of innovative and sustained leadership in teaching and learning. Associate Professors will display leadership in the wider academic community through, for example, chairing sessions at international conferences. Associate Professor PD Page 1 of 7

2 Key Relationships Reporting Relationships Responsible to: Reports to: Responsible for: Pro-Vice-Chancellor Head of School Nil Functional Relationships The Associate Professor will develop and maintain excellent relationships with the following colleagues, customers and clients for the purposes stated below: Internal Relationships Who does the job holder work or interact with inside the University Students Academic Staff College of Education, Health and Human Development management and administrative Staff Other University staff and bodies The purpose and frequency of these interactions is to: Daily contact face-to-face, via phone or internet for advice and online support Daily to co-ordinate, liaise and advise; monthly for school meetings or committee work Daily to co-ordinate and liaise or as required Monthly contribute to and advise cross-university committees and working groups External Relationships Who does the job holder work or interact with outside the University Other Educators Community agencies, Professional Associations, Government and non-government organisations Other Universities and educational providers The purpose and frequency of these interactions is to: Weekly contact as needed and warranted by teaching or service responsibilities Monthly contact Contact as required Salary Range This position is continuous full-time (nominally 37.5 hours per week = 1.0 FTE). The salary for this position is determined by the skills of the incumbent and the Academic Staff and Senior Tutors Collective Employment Agreement. Research / Scholarship / Creative Work To generate new ideas and concepts and investigate these in an appropriate manner, adding value to own area of academic expertise. 1. Continue to develop an international reputation for research in field. 2. Maintain quality, cutting-edge research programmes. 3. Foster links between teaching and research, including forms of research that are appropriate for the particular teaching context. 4. Dedicate persistent effort to keep the research process moving. 5. Actively seek and obtain funding in support of research programs. 6. Develop a significant research / scholarship record of published work in prestigious journals, or other media (as appropriate). 7. Develop and lead international research teams. 8. Mentor early career colleagues in research development 9. Present research at international and national conferences. 10. Assist postgraduate students and postdoctoral fellows with research development. 11. Contribute to the formulation and implementation of the research strategy of the School and the College. 2. Teaching To create a stimulating and supportive learning environment in which students can engage with relevant knowledge, learn applied skills and realise their academic potential. 1. Design and develop effective and relevant curriculum and courses, incorporating Te reo Maori as appropriate. 2. Prepare and deliver lectures that stimulate interest in subject matter. 3. Engage students through the creation of stimulating learning environments. 4. Set and mark student assessments and provide effective feedback. 5. Be available to students for discussion, academic / career advice and support, as relevant. 6. Promote biculturalism by evidencing teaching strategies that acknowledge Maori cultural values and meet the needs of Maori learners. 7. Participate in Professional Practice Supervision, as appropriate. 8. Supervise and mentor postgraduate research students. a. Formal supervision of postgraduate work. b. Pastoral care and development of postgraduate students. 9. Seek and respond to feedback on teaching performance. Associate Professor PD Page 3 of 7

4 3. Academic Leadership To demonstrate leadership within the University and discipline and all related professional activities. 1. Develop opportunities to demonstrate leadership in their particular professional discipline. 2. Assist and mentor less experienced colleagues with the development of their research and / or teaching skills. 3. Lead curriculum review and reform. 4. Provide leadership through appropriate planning, consultation, encouragement, delegation, coaching and staff development initiatives. 5. Provide leadership in the community, particularly in professional organisations. 4. University Service The University is assisted with the attainment of its strategic objectives through the provision of commitment and contribution to the wider wellbeing of your College/Service Unit. 1. Participate in projects in line with your College/Service Unit s strategic objectives. 2. Keep current and comply with UC systems, policies and procedures and relevant legislation, and constantly look for ways to improve processes and procedures. 3. Contribute to the University s image as a good place to work and study through the provision of high quality, professional services and showing courtesy and respect in interactions. 4. Demonstrate an honest respect for and appreciation of biculturalism and diversity by supporting fair treatment and equal opportunities for all. 5. Contribute to the sustainability efforts of the University through the responsible use of resources and equipment. 6. Demonstrate commitment to providing students with an educational environment that incorporates the UC Graduate Attributes employability and entrepreneurship, community engagement, internationalisation and contribution to a bi-cultural New Zealand in a multi-cultural society. 7. Attend annual business planning meetings and align work plans with the goals and objectives of the department. 8. Demonstrate commitment to own professional development, taking advantage of learning opportunities and engaging fully in PD&R process. 5. Health and Safety A safe and healthy working and learning environment is maintained at all times. 1. Comply with Occupational Health and Safety Legislation and Regulations. 2. Observe all University of Canterbury safe work policies, procedures and instructions. 3. Take responsibility for your own health and safety and ensure no action or inaction on your own part harms others in the workplace. 6. Projects or Other Duties To carry out other duties which may reasonably be required by your Manager from time to time in the course of the University s business and which fit the role s purpose as stated, and for which the position holder is qualified or has received adequate training or instruction. 5 Professional Development and Review (PD&R) The University has a Professional Development and Review Process (PD&R) which is undertaken annually. During this process, the Manager and Staff Member will discuss and agree what contribution the Staff Member is expected to make during the review period towards achieving the University s objectives. Objectives (consistent with the Key Result Areas and Behaviours in this Position Description and the Department / Unit / College s Business Plan); performance measures (indicators of achievement) and the support (including development) required by the Staff Member to achieve these objectives will be agreed. Technical or Professional Knowledge, Skills, and Experience Expert knowledge of in Physical Education and Sport Pedagogy Understanding of effective teaching methods and demonstrated experience in teaching Research level commensurate with the level of the academic role Competence in Microsoft Office Suite and other discipline relevant software Demonstrate an understanding of multicultural issues and display a commitment to the Treaty of Waitangi Associate Professor PD Page 6 of 7

7 Employment Checks Candidates who successfully reach the final stages of the selection process for this role will be required to undergo pre-placement screening checks, inclusive of but not limited to Qualification and Criminal History/ or Police Vetting checks. A satisfactory report from the relevant agency will be a condition of employment. The University will, however, make the final decision as to whether the appropriate standard has been met.
