1 "BRIDGED" VIRTUAL MACHINES IN "VMWARE PLAYER", "ORACLE VM VIRTUALBOX", AND "WINDOWS VIRTUAL PC" SUMMARY: For "VMware Player", "Oracle VM VirtualBox", and "Windows Virtual PC" virtual machines, the "Bridged" bridge network configuration makes the virtual machine act like it is directly attached to your real, physical local area network (LAN). However, the virtual "Bridged" bridge network is the trickiest one to install and configure so here is some technical advice for you. TECHNICAL DETAILS: UPSTREAM NETWORK ADAPTER ISSUES FOR THE HOST COMPUTER: According to various discussion group posts, very few real, physical Wi-Fi adapters (for the host) will work as the upstream "Bridged" adapter for "VMware Player 3" or "Oracle VM VirtualBox 4". The Linksys (Cisco) "Dual-Bank Wireless-N USB Adapter" (model = WUSB600N) is capable of acting as the upstream Wi-Fi adapter for a "bridged" virtual machine in both "VMware Player 3" and "Oracle VM VirtualBox 4".

2 DIFFERENCES BETWEEN "VMWARE..", "..VIRTUALBOX", AND "WINDOWS VIRTUAL PC" FOR CONFIGURING THE UPSTREAM NETWORK ADAPTER IN THE HOST COMPUTER: Checkmarking the "VMware Bridge Protocol" connects the upstream physical network adapter of the host to the virtual "Bridged" bridge of the "VMware Player" system.

3 Checkmarking the "VirtualBox Bridged Networking Driver" in the "..Properties" box of the upstream host adapter connects the physical network adapter to the virtual "Bridged" bridge of the "Oracle VM VirtualBox" system. Checkmarking the "Virtual PC Network Filter Driver" in the "..Properties" box of the upstream host adapter connects the physical network adapter to the virtual "Bridged" bridge of the "Windows Virtual PC" system. ************************************************************* In "VMware Player", if you have multiple network adapters in the host computer, the virtual "Bridged" bridge will automatically connect to the network adapter that connects upstream towards the Internet, if the corresponding "bridge protocol" is checkmarked ("turned on") for the upstream network adapter in the "Properties" box of the upstream network adapter in the host's "Control Panel": ************************************************************* In "Oracle VM VirtualBox", if you have multiple network adapters in the host computer, you have to manually configure virtual network adapter of the virtual machine to make it connect the upstream physical network: Click on the "..VirtualBox" virtual machine that you wish to provide with a " 'Bridged' bridge" virtual network adapter: Click on "Settings". Click on "Network". Make sure that "Enable Network Adapter" has a checkmark. Make sure that "Bridged Adapter" is selected for the "Attached to:" field. Click on the "Drop down list button" to the right of the "Name" field and select the network adapter that is the one that connects upstream towards the Internet. In this example, we selected the "Linksys WUSB600N WiFi Dual-Band ver. 2" network adapter:

4 ************************************************************* In "Windows Virtual PC", you have to manually configure a virtual network adapter of the host computer to make it connect to the upstream real network adapter of the host computer: Click on the Windows "Start button". Click on "All Programs" in the "Start menu". Click on "Windows Virtual PC". Click on the "Windows Virtual PC" sub-menu item. Locate the desired virtual machine in the right pane:

5 Perform a right click on the desired virtual machine. A pop-up context menu will be displayed: Click on "Settings" in the pop-up context menu:

6 A "..Virtual PC Settings" box will be displayed: Click on "Networking" in the "..Virtual PC Settings" box:

7 Click on the drop down list button to the right of "Adapter 1:":

8 Click on the real physical network adapter of the host. In this example, the real physical network adapter of the host is "Intel(R) PRO/1000 MT Network Connect". For "Windows Virtual PC" virtual network adapters, when the real physical network adapter of the host is selected for the virtual network adapter of a virtual machine, then the virtual machine is connected by means of a "Bridged" bridge to the real physical network adapter of the host computer. Please note that for "Windows Virtual PC", the term "Bridged" is not shown in the configuration screen of the virtual network adapter of the virtual machine.

9 CONFLICT RESOLUTION BETWEEN "VMWARE PLAYER 3" AND "ORACLE VM VIRTUALBOX 4": If you are running both "VMware Player 3" and "Oracle VirtualBox 4" in the same "host" computer, VMware virtual machines will fail to acquire a DHCP IP address unless you do the following: Go to the "Properties" or "Configuration" for the "VirtualBox Host-Only Ethernet Adapter" and remove the checkmark (disable) the "VMware Bridge Protocol":

10 For "Oracle VM VirtualBox 4", "bridged" network adapters succeeded when "Windows 7 Pro 64-bit" was the host and the guest was "Windows XP Pro 32-bit" or "Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit". For an "OS X 10.6" host running "Oracle VM VirtualBox 4", "bridged" network adapters worked fine for a "Ubuntu bit" guest virtual machine. For an "OS X 10.6" host running "Oracle VM VirtualBox 4", "bridged" network adapters worked fine for a "Windows 7 Enterprise Trial 64-bit" guest virtual machine. For an "OS X 10.6" host running "Oracle VM VirtualBox 4", "bridged" network adapters worked fine for an "OS X 10.6" guest virtual machine.
