Sungkyunkwan University (SKKU) Seoul, South Korea Julia Lefferts Economics & Business Economics Fall semester 2016

About the University Sungkyunkwan University(SKKU), founded in 1398, is the oldest University in Asia. SKKU has been rising on the national university ranking list in the past couple of years and is now one of the top 5 universities in Korea. The university has two campuses: The Humanities and Social Sciences Campus in Seoul and the Natural Sciences Campus in Suwon. The economics and business programs are on the campus in Seoul. This campus is located in Hyewha, which is a very lovely area. In my opinion, this location was perfect because it was quite in the middle of Seoul. The party districts are easily reachable with the subway or taxi, and the shopping district is only 4 stops away with the subway. Before my stay Preparations for the application RUG There are a couple of things you have to keep in mind when applying for the semester abroad. Firstly, if you are going to study outside of Europe, you might need to take a language test. The tests that are provided are IELTS (the one I took) and TOEFL. The slight difference between the two is that when taking IELTS, you have to interact with a real person during the speaking test, while TOEFL provides the test on the computer. Besides this and writing a motivation letter, there is not a lot more to prepare for. I visited two study abroad workshops and I attended one study abroad fair, which was quite helpful for me. Preparations for the application SKKU On the 9 th of March I received my first with information about the application. Of course, you have already been accepted into the University, but you still have to fill in some forms to make the application complete. The includes an online application guide, information about the SKKU exchange program and the fall course catalogue. Later on (around June), you will receive more information about housing and other things you ll need to arrange. Preparation for Korea To start with, Korea requires you to arrange a student Visa that lasts for more than 3 months. This will cost you around 54 euros. When you arrive in Korea, you still need to apply for a foreign registration card, because your visa itself will only be valid for around one month. After this certain date, the Visa is only valid in combination with the card. The vaccinations you need are Hepatitis A&B, DTP and Rabies. Rabies is not really necessary in Korea, but if you are going to travel around Asia afterwards, it might be useful. Furthermore, SKKU requires you to take a scan on Tuberculosis if you stay in the dormitory. This is possible in hospitals in the Netherlands. However, I took the test in a clinic in Seoul, which was about 25 euros. Accommodation SKKU offers you the possibility to stay in the dormitory, which is the option that I chose. I advise you all to do the same, since staying in the dorms is a good way to meet new people, it is close to the University, quite cheap (around 320 euro a month) and clean. For women, there are two dorms. I-house and M-house. For men they have M-house and C-house. You share a room with a roommate that possibly has another nationality, but I really enjoyed this because your English improves a lot and you have the possibility to interact with people from other cultures.

During my stay When I arrived in Korea, I stayed in a hostel for a couple of days to get rid of my jetlag and get used to the city. Consequently, I did not use the pick-up service from the airport that SKKU offers. On the 29 th of august, students could move into the dormitory and on the 31 st, SKKU organized an introduction day, which gives you the opportunity to meet new people and get to know your way around the campus. Students had to sign up for courses on the first couple of days of the semester. However, this process did not always run smoothly. The website of SKKU often did not work properly and a lot of students were not able to sign up for courses they wanted to take. Despite all of this, the university has an international office that is willing to help you with every problem, so don t worry about not getting into a course. This office also answers all your s with questions that you may have regarding the dormitory, payments and other problems. The semester officially started on the 1 st of September and ended on the 21 st of December. In this period there are two exam periods: one midterm period in the end of October and one endterm period in the middle of December. Courses 1. Monetary Policy (one lecture lasts for 75 minutes) - Your grade will consist of two homework assignments, two midterm exams and one endterm - You will receive 3 SKKU ETCs, which are 6 RUG ETCs for this course. - Literature: Frederic S. Mishkin, The Economics of Money, Banking and Financial Market, 10th edition, Pearson - The Study of money, credit, and liquidity as related to income, employment, and prices. Special attention is paid to the study of goals and effectiveness of monetary and banking policies. The course focuses on the role of Central Banks over the world and the money market in general. The difficulty of the course is average. You have to read a lot but the material itself is not that complicated. 2. International Finance (one lecture lasts for 75 minutes) - Your grade will consist of homework assignments, one midterm exam and one endterm - This course focuses on both finance and macroeconomics. A principle analysis of the pure theory of international trade, which was very interesting in my opinion. The course is a little bit harder than other courses. 3. Health Economics - Your grade will consist of one presentation, one midterm exam and one endterm - This course is designed to help students understand how basic economic concepts, principles, and theories can be applied to various health care issues including the production and cost of health care. For me, it was useful to follow this course because it is totally

different from the other courses that I have followed at the RUG. I would say that the difficulty is average. 4. Understanding Asian Culture - Your grade will consist of two reading responses, one midterm exam and one endterm - This course is quite useful because it teaches you the basic principles of the Asian culture, which is handy when spending half a year in this culture. It particularly focuses on Japan, China and Korea. The difficulty if average, so I would recommend this course to other students. 5. Financial Markets in Korea - Your grade will consist of homework assignments, one midterm exam and one endterm - This course is only available for exchange students only and helps students understand the basic principles in the financial market in general (it is not about Korea at all). The course is interesting and really easy to pass, so I would recommend it to other students. As I mentioned above, there was one possibility to sign up for these courses while I was still at home. However, I was not able to sign up then, so I managed to sign up while I was at the University. Travelling Seoul itself is such a big city that you are never bored. It has so many different districts which are all known for its own characteristics, so you are never bored. I managed to schedule my courses from Monday evening until Thursday afternoon, which meant that I was able to travel during the weekends. For example, I visited Jeju Island, Busan and China. In Korea there is always something to do, but it is also nice to travel to other countries. Japan and China are quite close, so a lot of students travelled to these destinations during the weekends. After the semester ended on the 21 st of December, I travelled to Thailand. Grand and costs I received the Marco Polo scholarship, which is available for every student (under certain conditions) who is going to study in Korea. The amount of this scholarship is around 900 euros. You will receive the first 600 euros in one of the first weeks of your stay in Korea, and the other 300 when you are back in the Netherlands and finished the report and other important administrative forms. There are also other scholarships for students who have an average above 7.0. The living expenses in Korea are quite high compared to other Asian countries. Going out to lunch and dinner, which you ll do every day, is not that expensive (around 4/5 euros) whereas regular products like fruit, groceries, dairy products and other food is really expensive. However, transportation (taxi or the subway) is really cheap. In the end, you will spend a lot more money than in the Netherlands, but this is also caused by the fact that you have a total different way of living your life.

After my stay Cultural perspective In my opinion, Seoul is the perfect place to study. The city is quite western, very well developed and there is not a lot of tourism. Korean people often do not speak English, but they are very polite. In addition, the food is amazing! (Even though I had to get used to it at first) Although the bruising Seoul is internationally oriented, signs of the Korean culture can be seen everywhere in the city. For example, there are a lot of temples or other cultural attractions to visit. The way of teaching on the university is very different from the way they teach at the RUG. For example, all the classes you have are mandatory to attend. If you don t, you will fail the course. Secondly, for a lot of courses you have to make homework assignments and lectures are given in classes for around 30 people. SKKU offers an intensive Korean Language Program, which gives you the opportunity to speak Korean quite fluently in the end. One drawback is that you have to follow the class from 9:00-15:00 on Monday till Friday. Luckily, the university also offers a less intensive Korean language course for two hours a week. I did not take any of these classes, which I regret now because it is useful to know the basics of the Korean language when you are there. In Korea they have a couple of cultural habits that you have to respect. First of all, you have to take everything with two hands. For example, if someone gives you the money (in a supermarket) you cannot accept it with only one hand, this is considered to be rude. Secondly, in some places (like homes or palaces) you always have to take off your shoes. Furthermore, respecting older people is very important in their culture. When you greet someone that is older than you (when you enter a store for example) you are expected to make a small bow. In Korea, people are shy, which is totally the opposite of the character of Dutch people. Also the eating habits are totally different. During the five months that I spent in Korea, I cooked once (however, this depends on your own choice) and you have to learn to eat with chopsticks. Because Korean people are so polite, there is almost no criminality and pickpocketing rarely happens (you still have to be careful though). This amazing experience has taught me a lot about culture. It was great to spend a couple of months in a totally different environment. Seoul is a very student-friendly city, and for me it felt like home so quickly. I definitely recommend this city and this amazing University to other students. Everything was very well organized and I have never regretted going.
