Mariusz Kalita, e.mail: SPIE Student Chapter FOTON was established in January Members of the Chapter come from different faculties of Lublin University of Technology (LUT) and Maria Curie Sklodowska University (UMCS). Among us there are electronic engineers, computer scientists and chemists. Until now we have created a structure containing four workgroups: Fiber application in communications Fiber sensors WDM technology Fiber transmission Workgroups during research 1

2 We have every week meetings during which we discuss and work on projects. We have succeeded in implementing one of them into practise. FOTON participate in many conferences and science initiatives. We took part in two annual conferences (autumn, spring) and some meetings organised by students organisations from other faculties. We met many interesting people which whom we still cooperate. It gave us a lot of new opportunities. We are planning to work on a project with members of student organisation Microchip. We were on scientific excursion in OTO - Fibers Fabric in Lublin. We saw there a lot of interesting technologies and got scientific publications which we will use during implementation of our projects. We observed the process of fiber fabrication. Scientific excursion at OTO In May 2005 we participated in a meeting with SPIE Student Chapter from Toruń. We had an opportunity to share our experience concerning projects we are working on. It gave us the possibility of expanding our knowledge and setting up different scientific relations. We learnt about fibre implementation in ophthalmology. 2

3 The meeting with SPIE Student Chapter from Toruń In December 2004 we participated in SPIE conference in Warsaw. We met there all SPIE Student Chapters from Poland and a few students from other countries. It was a great chance to meet people working on research similar to ones we are carrying out. Visit at optical laboratory - Faculty of Mechatronics Warsaw University of Technology The fact that we cooperate witch other SPIE Chapters and students organisations gives us the possibility to take advantages of experience and knowledge. Our contacts in Lublin also give us a lot of profits. We hope that we will be able to use the experience and knowledge that we acquired during the scientific excursions while 3

4 doing the projects. We constitute a well-developing group of young and creative people with a lot of willingness to work. These are qualities which we hope will let us be successful in the future. We promote science among students from LUT and make every endeavour to introduce them into science world. One of our members is employed part time as apprentice-assistant at LUT.
