1 Myton School RE AND PSHE DEPARTMENT YEAR: Year 7 Unit: Body and Soul Unit Title: Body and Soul Religious perspective: Christianity, Sikhism and Hinduism. STUDY UNIT STATEMENT: To explore what makes us who we are. To develop an understanding of the relationship between our body and soul. To explore beliefs about what happens when we die. To understand different religious beliefs about life after death. PSHE LINK TOPIC: 1 Do we have a soul? To explore what is meant by the term soul. To explain your own beliefs about the body and soul To evaluate the relationship between the body and soul. All Students will be able to understand what is meant by a person s souls. Most students will be able to explain whether or not they believe that the soul exists. Some students will be able to explain whether they believe the body or soul is more important. Discuss different definitions for the Body and Soul. Ask students to write a list of things that make them who they are e.g. beliefs, values, and interests. Then hand to students the Body and Soul diagram and asked them to put the words they have used to describe what makes them who they are and to order these into the correct sections on the diagram. Watch Bart Sell s his Soul and then ask students to answer questions. Are Body and Soul are the same thing Discuss Ask students to either stand the four corners of the room to represent to what extent they agree with the statement or to write down their own response and the response of the person sat next to them.

To explore opinions about what happens when we die To understand why people believe in an afterlife To evaluate the impact of having a belief about life after death. All students will be able to explain their own beliefs about life after death. Most students will be able to explore different opinions about life after death. Some students will be able to evaluate the evidence provided about life after death and draw their own conclusions. Read Dean s story as a class. Find someone who activity students must travel around the room until they have found someone who holds each of the beliefs on their card. They must then cut out and stick in their book the option they think will most, and least likely happen after death. Ask students what they think about Dean s story Is it realistic? Why did this change the way Dean behaved? Differentiated work sheets Students must then write a letter to Dean using the differentiated work sheets as a guide. Please distribute sheets according to ability. Ask students to write down three questions that they have for Dean about his experience. Students must write these questions in their book (they will come back to these during lesson 4)

To explore my understanding of the afterlife To be able to explain different religious views about what happens when we die To be able to compare and contrast different beliefs about the afterlife. All Students should be able to explain their own views about life after death. Most- will be able to explain two different religious beliefs about what happens when we die. Some Will be able to compare and contrast different religious beliefs. Students should be split into groups and roles allocated Peer assessment Watch short video clip (saved in shared areas video files under death). Hand out starter sheet with corresponding questions. Ask students to jot down responses whilst watching the clip. Class discussion. Students should use the different information sources about life after death and jot down the main points in a table. Students should then create a comparative story board comparing two different religious perspectives on what happens when we die. Groups should swap story boards and each group should peer assess using the peer assessment slip.

Number students 1 and 2. Ask all the 1 s to describe what they think heaven would be like while the other student attempts to draw this and then ask number 2 s to describe what they would imagine hell to be like whilst 1 s draw this. Discuss any common idea s e.g. fire, clouds and where this idea s come from. Discuss Christian explanations for heaven and hell on. To understand different beliefs about heaven and hell To explain my own view on what heaven and hell would be like. To explore the links between people s behaviour and their afterlife. All students will be able to describe their beliefs about heaven and hell. Most students will understand Christian beliefs about heaven and hell Some students will be able to make links between people s behaviour and belief about life after death. Investigation Students to feedback their findings Show students a clip of Lazarus and the Rich Man. Explain what a parable is and they will be watching the end section of an animated version of the parable. After watching the parable students are to copy the table from the and write down how heaven and hell had been shown in the clip. Students will then work in a group (please provide group roles) to re-write the beginning of the parable and put this into the format of story board. Students must decide how Lazarus got to heaven and the rich man to Hell. Teacher to then reveal what really happens at the beginning of the parable.

Revise for end of topic assessment 5 Interim Assessment To revise what I have learnt in RE so far To complete as RE assessment To work on my assessment writing skills Go through the different style questions that Complete assessment you could expect to answer in a ks3 assessment. Students should then plan answers to the questions. You may judge depending on the group whether this should take 1 or 2 lessons in preparation. There are example answers in the old scheme that could be used in preparation. Home Learning Project
