1 Blackboard Faculty Tutorial Wikis A wiki is an online collaboration tool that allows documents to be created and edited by multiple users within a course. There are two different types of Wikis: Course Wikis: All enrolled users are able to contribute to, edit, and comment on wikis. Group Wikis: All members enrolled in a specific group are able to contribute to, edit, and comment on wikis. Creating a Wiki 1. From the Control Panel, click Wikis under the Course Tools section. 2. On the next screen, click Create Wiki. 3. Enter a Name for the wiki and specific Instructions for students into the text box. W i k i s - P a g e 1

2 4. Under Wiki Availability, click Yes to make the wiki available or No to make it unavailable. 5. Under Limit Availability: 5.1. Check the Display After and Display Until fields to set the availability of the wiki Or leave the boxes unchecked so the wiki is accessible all the time. 6. Under Wiki Participation, set the wiki to be Closed to Editing or Open to Editing. 7. Under Wiki Settings, select No Grading or Grade as desired. If Grade is selected, enter a point value. NOTE: If grading is selected, a column will be automatically created in the grade center. 8. Click Submit when finished. Creating a Wiki Home Page Once a wiki has been created, the wiki s home page should be created. Students have the ability to create the home page as well; however the home page will be the default entry point for the wiki in question. 1. Access the Wiki s area by clicking on Wiki in the Course Tools area of the Control Panel. 2. Click on the title of the Wiki in question. W i k i s - P a g e 2

3 3. If the Home Page has not been created, a blue message will appear at the top of the screen. If this does not appear, a home page for the wiki has already been created. 4. Enter a Name for the page and add wiki content as desired. 5. Click Submit when finished. Creating a Wiki Link in a Content Area In most cases, students can access wikis by way of the Tools area of the menu, however, instructors also have the option of creating a wiki link in any content area of the course. 1. Navigate to the desired content area and make sure the Edit Mode button is ON. 2. Hover over the Add Interactive Tool menu and choose Wiki. W i k i s - P a g e 3

4 3. Choose whether to: 3.1. Link to the Wikis page 3.2. Link to specific Wiki 3.3. Create a new Wiki 4. Click Next to continue 5. Choose a Name for the Link and set Availability and Date/Time restrictions if desired. 6. Click Submit Adding New Wiki Content Once a wiki has been created and the home page has been defined, wiki content can be added. 1. Access the Wiki s area by clicking on Wiki in the Course Tools area of the Control Panel. 2. Click on the title of the Wiki in which to add content. W i k i s - P a g e 4

5 3. Click on the Create Wiki Page. If existing wiki content is to be edited, see the section entitled Editing Wiki Content. 4. On the Create Wiki Page screen, enter a name for the page and add content as desired. 5. Click Submit when finished. 6. The new wiki page will then appear on the screen. Editing Existing Wiki Content Once wiki content has been created, it can be edited, modified, and removed by any wiki participant. 1. Find the wiki page to edit. If more than one wiki page exists, the different pages can be accessed by clicking on the page titles in the About this Wiki area. W i k i s - P a g e 5

6 2. Once the wiki page in question has been located, click on the Edit Wiki Content button. 3. When the Edit Wiki Page screen appears, edit, add, and remove the existing content as desired. 4. Click Submit when finished. Viewing Wiki History Each time a wiki page is saved, a new version of that page is saved in the History area of the page. This will allow the page in question to be reverted to a previous version. It will also allow for a comparison of the page s modifications. Changes are marked with a time and date stamp, along with the user name of the person who made the changes. 1. On the Wikis page, find the wiki in question under the About this Wiki area. 2. Click on the Action Link of the wiki in question and click on History. W i k i s - P a g e 6

The Page History will now show a list of all wiki versions To view a version, click on the version s title To compare versions, select two versions to compare and click on the Compare Versions button To delete versions, check the versions to delete and click the Delete button. Individual versions can be deleted by clicking on the Action Link of the version in question and clicking delete. Please note that version deletion is only available to instructor-level users in the course. Students cannot delete wiki versions To revert to a previous version, delete all versions saved after the desired version. Grading Wikis If the Grading option was selected upon a Wiki s creation, wikis can be graded directly through the instructor s view of a Wiki page. NOTE: Wiki grades can only be assigned for the entire Wiki and not individual Wiki edits. 1. On the Wikis page, enter the wiki in question by clicking on the Wiki s title. W i k i s - P a g e 7

8 2. Near the top right, click on the Participation and Grading button. If this button is not available, enable Edit Mode. 3. On the Participation Summary screen, click on the student in question. If all or most students have participated in the wiki, it may be best to start at the top of the list alphabetically. OR 4. Click on the links in the Page Version column to view the student s contributions. W i k i s - P a g e 8

9 5. Once a grade has been formulated, click on the Edit Grade button in the Grade area on the right. 6. In the Grade popup window: 6.1. Enter the number of points this student earned into the Current Grade Value field. If a rubric is associated with this Wiki, click on the View Rubrics button Enter any comments that should be visible to the students in the Feedback box Enter any internal comments in the Grading Notes box. Students are not able to see what is entered in this box Click Save Grade when finished. W i k i s - P a g e 9
