Welcome to 30-30! ( by elearnrussian.com ) Добропожаловатьвтридцать-тридцать! This is an audio based program for learning Russian where you ll learn 30 new words in each 30 minute audio lesson. That s a LOT, but don t worry, each lesson builds on the previous lessons with lots of repetition to help you really lock it in. And we have plenty of other material and lessons in addition to this high-speed series for learning Russian. My name s Brian. МенязовутБрайан. And this is Yulia. Аэто Юля. Привет! МенязовутЮля, аэто Брайан. She just said: Hi! My name s Yulia, and this is Brian. I don t want you to have to listen to non-native Russian, so she ll do the Russian while I do the English. When we start trying to master the pronunciation of words, then you ll hear both of us, along with her corrections to my pronunciation. Often you won t hear any difference at all, like me. Keep trying though and eventually you ll hear the difference and we ll both improve our Russian speaking. Хорошо? (Okay?) Хорошо! (Юля) One word that you ll hear many times a day is хорошо, which generally means okay or fine, good. So now say the word for okay. хорошо Another word that s handy to know is (hi). Use this greeting with friends and people you know. The more formal hello is те and the friendlier version of it is. Pay attention to the difference in the ending. Formal words generally have the ending -те. те Once again. те And the word for hi is: Хорошо, we re moving right along. What s the word for okay?.. хорошо Now, listen to Yulia do a conversation of two people meeting each other. Young people often use even when they re meeting someone new who is about the same age. Привет! МенязовутАнтон. (Hi! My name is Anton.) Привет! МенязовутЮля. (Hi! My name is Yulia.) Оченьприятно. (Nice to meet you.) The last bit you heard, Оченьприятно., literally means Very pleased. And the reply to Оченьприятно. can either be to also say, Оченьприятно., or to say (Me too.) 30-30_02 elearnrussian.com Page 1 of 11

Now listen again with the formal greeting. Здравствуйте! МенязовутАнтон. Здравствуйте! МенязовутЮля. Оченьприятно. And to make it slightly less formal, remember: (less formal) те (formal) So, less formal would be: Здравствуй! МенязовутАнтон. Здравствуй! МенязовутЮля. Оченьприятно. If you can, try and make the same sounds that Yulia is making. Really, that s all a language is, just a collection of sounds. Here are the three greetings, starting with the most casual: те Once again. те And the word for okay?.. хорошо And for nice to meet you?.. оченьприятно Now let s try a formal meeting of two people with a third person. Здравствуйте! МенязовутАнтон. АэтоЮля. (And this is Yulia.) Здравствуйте! МенязовутАнна. Оченьприятно. The expression Менязовут does not literally translate to My name is, but the expressions are equivalent. Literally, зовут means they call, so Менязовут would be They call me. But forget all that, and simply remember the match My name is : Менязовут. Listen again with the casual greeting. Привет! МенязовутАнтон. АэтоЮля. Привет! МенязовутАнна. Оченьприятно. The expression АэтоЮля. (And this is Yulia.) is also a really good expression to learn. The word это means this, that. The word A is often heard at the beginning of a sentence and means and, but. So how would you ask, And this?.. Аэто? Pretty simple, right? Let s review the words we ve worked on so far. Try and think of the English equivalent before I say it _02 elearnrussian.com Page 2 of 11

хорошо те Менязовут.. Оченьприятно. a это okay hi hello hello (formal) My name is.. Nice to meet you. Me too. and, but this, that How d you make out? Don t worry if you didn t get them all, or even any. This is a fairly high-speed approach to learning, and we have lots of other material and lessons to help you lock it all in. Now, let s learn the words for who (кто) and what (что). Once again, кто(who) / что(what) If you see someone in a photo, you might ask, Who s this? or Who s that?. In Russian you d say: Ктоэто? And it s the same for both expressions, since this/that is simply.. это. If you re at someone s house, looking at photos they have out, and they weren t looking, so don t know what picture you re talking about, the conversation might go like this: Ктоэто? (Who s this?) Кто? (Who?) (But perhaps more common in both English and Russian to say Where? / Где ) Это. (This.) А, этобрайан. (Ah, that s Brian.) Here, you can see that Russian uses the same expression as English for Ah, that s Brian., and it s the same word as you learned earlier for and, but (a). The same little dialogue also works using what, listen: Чтоэто? (What s this?) Что? (What?) (Again, perhaps more common in both English and Russian to say Where? / Где ) Это. (This.) Янезнаю. (I don t know.) The last sentence Янезнаю. literally means I not know. You can also simply say Незнаю. (Literally Not know., or as we commonly say, Dunno. ) Russian uses the words I and me differently than in English, so you need to be careful and not translate, just get used to using the right word in Russian. How would you say: Not me. or Not I... Нея. And me or I is simply:.. Я. And how would you say, Me too.?.. Ятоже. Of course you may have guessed which also means Me too. but is used in different situations. We recommend you get used to saying Ятоже. (me too) since it s slightly more common and it helps you avoid an m m association with (me too) _02 elearnrussian.com Page 3 of 11

Listen again to who and what кто (who) что(what) And do you remember the word for this, that?.. это Let s listen to the 3 greetings again to help you lock them in. Хорошо? (Okay?) Привет! Здравствуй! Здравствуйте! And you ll often simply hear Здрасьте! This isn t an officially correct word and you won t often see it written, but it s commonly spoken. And it s always good to learn how to say thank you (спасибо) and you re welcome (пожалуйста). We ll practice getting the pronunciation exactly right later. Listen again: спасибо(thank you) пожалуйста(you re welcome; or please) The word пожалуйста has 3 basic meanings; 1) you re welcome, 2) please (when asking for something), and 3) please, go ahead (when offering something). So a simple dialogue would be: Пожалуйста. (Please, go ahead.) Спасибо. (Thank you.) Пожалуйста. (You re welcome.) Now, let s learn the words for he, she and they : он, она, они he (он) she (она) they (они) Here s what someone might say to a friend when they finish talking to someone on the phone. Ктоэто? (Who was that?) ЭтоАнтон. (That was Anton.) Ктоон? (Who s he?) You might use the same expressions if you re out at a party or something, and see someone. Ктоэто? (Who s that?) ЭтоАнна. (That s Anna.) Ктоона? (Who s she?) And if you re referring to two or more people, you d say: Ктоэто? (Who s that?) ЭтоБрайаниЮля. (That s Brian and Yulia.) Ктоони? (Who are they?) Here, you heard the other Russian word for and, и. Listen to the two words and (и) and and, but (а): и(and) а(and, but) Let s see how many of the Russian words you can remember from the English equivalents. Make sure you repeat out loud the Russian word after you hear it and try and say it on your own, before Yulia gives you the answer _02 elearnrussian.com Page 4 of 11

okay хорошо hi hello (casual) hello (formal) те hello (spoken only) здрасьте My name is.. Менязовут.. Nice to meet you. Оченьприятно. Me too. and, but a and и this, that это who кто what что I, me я not; don t не I know язнаю I don t know янезнаю me too ятоже too, also тоже he он she она they они thank you спасибо please; you re welcome пожалуйста Another very useful word to now is sorry or excuse me : извините Notice the -те ending, which means it s formal. With friends you d simply say извини (sorry). Listen to the two together: извини извините At this point, you can now reply to any question in Russian: Извините, янезнаю. (Sorry, I don t know.) In Russian, as in many languages, there are two different forms for the word you. The singular and casual form is ты and the formal and plural form is вы. If it s being used for formal, singular, then it should be capitalized, but this rule isn t strictly adhered to. Once again, the two forms of you are: ты (casual, singular) вы (formal, plural) The remaining pronoun to learn has a similar sound, мы (we, us) _02 elearnrussian.com Page 5 of 11

Let s now review all the basic pronouns. I, me я you (casual, sing.) ты he он she она we мы you (formal, plural) вы they они Let s practice them a bit. Try and think of the Russian expression before you hear it. Who are you? (casual) : Ктоты? And you can change the word order around also and say, Тыкто? Who s he? : Ктоон? Who s she? : Ктоона? Who are they? : Ктоони? Who are you? (formal or plural) : Ктовы? You won t generally ever need to express the ideas Who am I? (Ктоя?) or Who are we? (Ктомы?) but you can. Let s practice them again but with a new word, where (где). Listen again and pay close attention to the sound: where (где) If you re talking to someone on their mobile phone, you might ask, Where are you? (Гдеты?) or (Ты где?). Notice in the second example how the g sound is generally pronounced with the first word. Listen to this simple conversation. Алло? (Hello?) Алло! Тыгде? (Hello! Where are you?) Янезнаю. Аты где? (I don t know. Where are you?) (note the word emphasis as in English) Notice that the Russian word for hello when answering the phone is nearly the same as it is in English. Алло. (Hello.) Can you hear the small inflection? Listen again and try and copy the sound. Алло. (Hello.) And notice that the word A was used in the reply: Янезнаю. Аты где? (I don t know. Where are you?) See if you can give the Russian for these simple sentences. Where is he? (Гдеон?) Where is she? (Гдеона?) Where are they? (Гдеони?) Where am I? (Гдея?) Where are we? (Гдемы?) Where are you? (Гдеты? или Тыгде? или Гдевы? или Вы где?) And now you know the word for or (или) _02 elearnrussian.com Page 6 of 11

Listen to this short phone conversation. - Алло? - Алло. Привет. Тыгде? - Дома. (At home.) (be sure to get the emphasis on the first syllable) Аты? (And you?) - Тожедома. (Also at home.) The Russian word for house, home is дом and it changes to дома for (at home). It s also useful to know that the Russian word дом generally refers to the apartment building itself, and people live in an apartment (квартира). And once again we used the word for, also (тоже). Repeat the following and think of the meanings: Ятожедома. (I m also at home.) Мытожедома. (We re also at home.) Онтожедома. (He s also at home.) Онатожедома. (She s also at home.) Онитожедома. (They re also at home.) Now let s review all the words introduced so far. okay хорошо hi hello (casual) hello (formal) те hello (spoken only) здрасьте Hello. (on the phone) Алло. thank you спасибо please; you re welcome пожалуйста Excuse me. (casual) Извини. Excuse me. (formal) Извините. My name is.. Менязовут.. Nice to meet you. Оченьприятно. Me too. and, but a and и or или this, that это who кто what что where где I, me я not; don t не I know язнаю I don t know янезнаю me too ятоже too, also тоже he он she она they они you (casual) ты you (formal, plural) вы we мы house, apartment building дом at home дома apartment квартира 30-30_02 elearnrussian.com Page 7 of 11

How did you make out? Don t worry if you didn t remember many of them. We ll use them all many more times and eventually they ll sink in. Remember, the expression used after meeting someone Оченьприятно. (Nice to meet you.) actually means Very nice.. So the word for very is очень and nice is приятно. (Generally in relation to a feeling thus приятно= pleasant, pleasing, agreeable, nice) If you re getting a massage or something and it feels really nice then you can say: Этооченьприятно. (That s really nice.) Let s wrap it up here, since we ve already introduced more than 30 words. Ничего!..which means, No worries! or No problem! And we ll spend the remaining time doing some drills to help improve your pronunciation and help lock all these words into your memory. Хорошо? Okay? Do you remember these three words? very nice nothing; No problem! очень приятно ничего And how about these polite expressions? thank you please; you re welcome Excuse me. (casual) Excuse me. (formal) спасибо пожалуйста Извини. Извините. Notice that with спасибо (thank you), the s sound at the beginning isn t always clear and it can sound like it starts with a p sound. Also, make sure you get a good clear ee sound in the middle. Listen again: спасибо( пасибо) Now with пожалуйста, make sure you get a good clear ж sound, not an sh sound, and pay attention to the other sounds also. Listen: пожалуйста по-жа-луй-ста пожалуйста Once again: thank you (спасибо) And the greetings: hi () hello (casual) () hello (formal) (те) hello (spoken only) (здрасьте) Hello. (on the phone) (Алло.) And, Excuse me. (casual) (Извини.) Excuse me. (formal) (Извините.) To which you might reply: No problem! (Ничего!) 30-30_02 elearnrussian.com Page 8 of 11

Once again: please, thank you, you're welcome: Пожалуйста. Спасибо. Пожалуйста. And the greetings: hi () hello (casual) () hello (formal) (те) hello (spoken only) (здрасьте) Hello. (on the phone) (Алло.) And, Excuse me. (casual) (Извини.) Excuse me. (formal) (Извините.) No problem! (Ничего!) And the word for 'okay' : хорошо And how do you say: My name is.. (Менязовут..) Nice to meet you. (Оченьприятно.) Me too. () And the other way to say Me too.? Ятоже. I don t know. (Янезнаю.) I know, I know. (Язнаю, язнаю.) Who s that? (Ктоэто?) I don t know. (Янезнаю.) I don t know either. (Ятоженезнаю.) Thus, it s common for native Russian speakers to have trouble remembering to use the word either since in Russian they simply use the word тоже (also) for both cases. Do you remember these words: who (кто) what (что) where (где) Let s practice them: What s this? (Чтоэто?) Who s that? (Ктоэто?) Where are you? (Тыгде? илигдеты?) I m at home. (Ядома.) And you? (Аты?) I m also at home. (Ятожедома.) Now let s practice all the pronouns: I, me (я) you (casual) (ты) you (formal, plural) (вы) he (он) she (она) they (они) we (мы) 30-30_02 elearnrussian.com Page 9 of 11

We re at home. (Мы дома.) I don t know where she is. (Я незнаю, гдеона.) I don t know where he is either. (Ятоженезнаю, гдеон.) It wasn t me. (Этонея.) It wasn t me either. (Этотоженея.) Me or you? (Яилиты?) Him or her? (Онилиона?) Us or them? (Мыилиони?) Me and you. (Яиты.) Him and her. (Ониона.) Them too. (Онитоже.) Is that nice? (Этоприятно?) Very nice! (Оченьприятно!) My name is.. (Менязовут..) Nice to meet you. (Оченьприятно.) Me too. () who, what, where (кто, что, где) Not him! (Неон!) Not her! (Неона!) Not them! (Неони!) Is that him? (Этоон?) I don t know. (Янезнаю.) Excuse me. (casual) (Извини.) Excuse me. (formal) (Извините.) No problem! (Ничего!) and, but (a) and (и) or (или) this, that (это) not; don t (не) I know (язнаю) I don t know (янезнаю) too, also (тоже) me too (ятоже) house, apartment building (дом) at home (дома) apartment (квартира) very (очень) nice (приятно) nothing; No problem! (ничего) Well done! Now let s do one last run through the list of words learned so far. okay (хорошо) hi () hello (casual) () hello (formal) (те) hello (spoken only) (здрасьте) 30-30_02 elearnrussian.com Page 10 of 11

Hello. (on the phone) (Алло.) thank you (спасибо) please; you re welcome (пожалуйста) Excuse me. (casual) (Извини.) Excuse me. (formal) (Извините.) My name is.. (Менязовут..) Nice to meet you. (Оченьприятно.) Me too. () and, but (a) and (и) or (или) this, that (это) who (кто) what (что) where (где) I, me (я) not; don t (не) I know (язнаю) I don t know (янезнаю) me too (ятоже) too, also (тоже) he (он) she (она) they (они) you (casual) (ты) you (formal, plural) (вы) we (мы) house, apartment building (дом) at home (дома) apartment (квартира) Ятожедома.
