Some knowledge you can only obtain from an actual functioning engine. Through RMIT, I ve been able to take on exciting opportunities including my internship at Rolls-Royce in Bristol, UK. I ve also had opportunities to intern in Australia for the Defence, Science and Technology Organisation and QinetiQ. I was able to apply what I had learned at RMIT and extend my skills further. The work experience support at RMIT is excellent. You know what to expect in the workforce and what direction you might want to take your career in. RMIT has prepared me for the workforce by helping me become more analytical and confident, approaching problems and developing teamwork skills. Associate Degree The two-year Associate Degree in Engineering Technology is your pathway to a future in engineering. At the end of the first year, which covers general principles in engineering, you will choose from one of seven majors: Advanced Manufacturing and Mechatronics Aerospace Engineering Civil Engineering Computer and Network Engineering Electrical and Electronic Engineering Mechanical Engineering Sustainable Systems Engineering. Pathways If you complete the associate degree with a GPA of 2.0 or above, you are guaranteed entry into a related bachelor degree with credit for the equivalent of two years of study. A study score of at least 20 in Mathematical Methods (CAS). A study score of at least 25 in English (EAL) or at least 20 in any other English. Advanced Diplomas Another option is to undertake a two-year advanced diploma program. Advanced diplomas are ideal if you want to specialise in a specific engineering discipline from the very start of your studies. Pathways Upon completion of the advanced diploma, you can apply for entry into a relevant bachelor degree and you may get up to one-and-a-half years credit. Most advanced diplomas in engineering have no formal entry requirements, though Year 12 Mathematical Methods and Physics are encouraged.

8 8 I started my career as an automotive mechanic, so mechanical engineering was a solid next step. Practical work is a large part of any engineering degree at RMIT, which is extremely important. There s value in understanding how something works under ideal conditions but knowing how it actually works in the real world is more valuable to employers. I mentor first year students and I am also a member of the Staff-Student Consultative Committee. Both are extremely rewarding and enable me to give back to RMIT. 9 9 Associate Degree in Engineering Technology RMIT Code: AD026...FT2 V T 2015 Clearly-in ATAR: This program is aimed at students starting out in a career in engineering. It allows you to specialise in one of seven major engineering disciplines. Upon graduating from this program you may be eligible for entry into the relevant bachelor degree program. This associate degree has seven majors: Advanced Manufacturing and Mechatronics Aerospace Engineering Civil Engineering Computer and Network Engineering Electrical and Electronics Engineering Mechanical Engineering Sustainable Systems Engineering. In the first year, you will learn fundamental principles of engineering that apply across the different major areas. At the end of your first year you will select the major you will specialise in for your second year. If you have maintained a grade point average (GPA) of 2.0 or higher, you will be eligible for guaranteed entry into a degree program relevant to your major, with credit for 192 study points (equivalent to two years study). Year One You will be introduced to fundamental engineering skills including drafting, use of hand and power tools, machine processes and manufacturing. You will cover materials engineering, which includes metals, composites, plastics and adhesives. You will learn the processes used to construct objects from these materials and the external factors that can change the effectiveness of these materials. You will also develop skills in computer-aided drafting (CAD) using specialised software. At the end of this year, you will choose your engineering major. Year Two You will choose subjects relevant to your engineering major. All majors emphasise professional and personal development, allowing you to build your skills in communication, decision making and team leading. You will undertake an engineering project to design, develop and present a product. The engineering project is carried out in conjunction with industry or simulates a real engineering environment. This program has a very strong Industry Advisory Committee (IAC), which strongly links the program and actual industry developments. The IAC is comprised of staff from local engineering organsations. It provides regular feedback on the program and the changing needs of the aviation industry. Teaching staff within the program have been industry professionals. They have extensive experience and contact networks. Aerospace graduates may work in the aerospace industry as aircraft maintenance engineers or aerospace design engineers at paraprofessional level. A civil major will allow you to work in civil and structural fields as a laboratory technician, research assistant, construction supervisor or CAD draftsperson. A major in computer/network engineering will allow you to pursue a career in networking, IP telephony, network design or network support. With a major in electrical and electronics, you can work in electronic design, service engineering or microprocessor programming. If you choose to major in mechanical or advanced manufacturing and mechatronics, you can work in roles including product design, production planning or as an automation specialist. Sustainable systems major graduates will focus on the development of a sustainable system approach. The following streams are fully accredited by Engineers Australia: Civil Engineering Computer and Network Engineering Electrical and Electronics Engineering Mechanical Engineering Aerospace Engineering. Graduates are eligible for graduate membership of Engineers Australia. Full membership as an Engineering Associate may be obtained after an appropriate period of professional practice. Australia is one of eight countries that are signatories to the International Engineering Alliance, also known as the Dublin Accord, for engineering technicians. Graduates with this qualification are recognised in all countries that are signatories to the Accord. The other streams do not yet have accreditation by Engineers Australia. Accreditation will be sought for these streams as soon as it is feasible to do so within the accreditation timelines set by Engineers Australia. Once they are fully accredited, graduates of the programs will be eligible for graduate membership of Engineers Australia. Units 3 and 4 a study score of at least 20 in Mathematical Methods (CAS) and a study score of at least 20 in any English (except EAL) or at least 25 in English (EAL). This program diversifies into one of seven disciplines in second year. This program offers a balance of engineering and managementtype courses. An associate degree is a two-year university qualification that is taught in a vocational setting. Associate degree students graduate with industry-ready skills to enter the workforce and can continue on to further study towards a related bachelor degree.

Aviation is highly competitive and needs well-trained individuals who can work effectively in rapidly changing environments. RMIT has been involved in aerospace and aviation education and training for more than 60 years. RMIT s suite of programs produces graduates equipped to be effective in a wide range of roles and levels. You will gain a broad awareness of the aviation industry and a range of analytical skills that will give you a comprehensive appreciation of the aviation operating environment. Through this program you will develop breadth and depth of thinking, and the ability to solve problems relevant to the aviation industry. The program contains two specialised streams. The first stream is in aviation operations and management, while the second is in piloting. The program also offers a career development option for people who already hold a Commercial Pilot s Licence. Commercial pilots can receive up to one year of advanced standing credit. The program contains two specialised streams. The first stream is in aviation operations and management. This stream focuses on developing a breadth of skills and knowledge across the aviation industry. This includes operational and management aspects of airlines and airports, as well as cargo and logistics, ground handling and safety. This stream also includes opportunities for you to select various focuses, tailoring your degree to your preferred area of future employment. The second stream is in piloting. In this stream, you will gain the depth of knowledge and skills required to become a commercial pilot, while gaining the extensive knowledge about the aviation industry. Flight training can be taken in conjunction with RMIT Flight Training at Point Cook, or with any other government approved provider (either at Moorabbin or another aerodrome). Students should note their specific enrolment requirements for full-time study, which may limit them to selecting RMIT Flight Training. Areas of study include: Technical studies: You will develop an understanding of aircraft and aviation systems. Professional development courses: project activities develop and integrate discipline-specific skills and generic capabilities that are widely used across the professions. Industry systems and processes: You will develop knowledge and skills in planning and management. Planning and management relevant to the aviation industry: these take account of risk, safety, human factors, the industry environment and other key themes. This program has connections to a range of aviation industry organisations. In all years of the program, industry-based professionals deliver lectures that are designed to enhance your understanding of the aviation industry. Many final year projects are supported by aviation industry professionals. Graduates may choose to embark on professional careers in the following areas: airline management airline operations airport management airport operations airport planning aviation charter business aviation consulting aviation regulation and safety commercial pilot. Global Opportunities RMIT encourages you to aspire to a global career, not just a local one. Student Profile I chose to study at RMIT because it is wellknown in the areas of engineering and aviation. The degree focuses on the aviation industry as a whole by bringing in many expert lecturers from the field and developing the course to mirror the industry as it changes. I was fortunate to undertake an internship with Emirates Airline, which changed my way of thinking and gave me the chance to learn from experts in the field. As a participant of a Korean Air University summer program in South Korea, I had the chance to build my knowledge and make new connections with students in the same field. Humaid Almaazmi Bachelor of Applied Science (Aviation) You can specialise in one of two specialised streams. The first specialisation is in aviation operations and management. The second specialised stream is in piloting. Through partner organisations in Europe, Asia and the United States, the RMIT International Experience and Research Program (RIIERP) offers workplace training and academic research placements between six and 12 months. There are also opportunities to study overseas through Education Abroad. Qualified commercial pilots and others with experience in the aviation industry are particularly encouraged to apply. You will also need to attend a mandatory interview at the Point Cook site prior to enrolment. Note: In most cases having minor vision problems, such as those requiring you to wear glasses, will not prevent you getting a licence. The medical examination ensures that there are no conditions that prevent you from operating an aircraft safely.

The Bachelor of Applied Science (Aviation) component will prepare you for employment in a range of operational management and planning roles in the aviation industry. The Bachelor of Business (Management) component will further enhance your understanding and skills and prepare you to manage contemporary organisations within complex and changing economic and social conditions. You will study core courses and elective courses that will allow you to tailor your double degree to your interest area. Core discipline areas include: aviation and airport management aviation strategy aircraft maintenance human factors aviation safety and quality business courses. Business management studies will focus on business skills, professional specialisations and business experience. Specialisations can include: management employment relations management accounting and finance human resource management marketing. In the final year you will undertake the Capstone Aviation Industry Project (AERO 2431) in which you will receive feedback from industry practitioners. RMIT has expanded Australian and international links with the aviation industry. Key stakeholders participated in the original development of this double degree and play a continuing role to maintain its relevance and strong graduate career opportunities. 12 12 Aerospace Engineering and Aviation Bachelor of Engineering (Aerospace Engineering) (Honours) RMIT Code: BH078...FT4* V T 2015 Clearly-in ATAR: CITY AND BUNDOORA CAMPUSES* Aerospace engineering is an exciting profession focusing on the analysis, design and operation of sophisticated aerospace hardware and software systems. The term aerospace includes atmospheric and space flight. As with all fields of engineering, aerospace engineering is complex and demanding, requiring talented, creative and highly motivated people. This highly analytical field of engineering requires you to have well-developed skills in mathematics and physical sciences, as well as excellent communication skills. Australia s aerospace industry is international and export-oriented. There s a firm emphasis on value-added design and manufacture activities that are internationally competitive. These make effective use of the excellent standard of aerospace education at RMIT. You will graduate with the analytical, technological and managerial skills required to practise aerospace engineering. You will also learn to appreciate the wider social implications of the engineering profession. * Years one and two are conducted at the City campus and years three and four at the Bundoora campus. The program is composed of core engineering discipline areas (for essential learning) and elective studies. You can tailor your program to suit your developing area of interest and as a way to enhance career opportunities. The core areas include engineering design, engineering practice, engineering professional development and engineering sciences courses. Sustainability issues are built into multiple areas of the program. There is increasing demand for long-term solutions in this area. The aerospace discipline consists of aerodynamics, aerospace materials and structures, aerospace systems, design, dynamics and control, mathematics, professional skill development, structural analysis, thermodynamics, aerospace propulsion and engineering project management. Specific aerospace focus commences in the first semester of the program. You will be provided with multiple opportunities for experimental learning across the program, including a design, build, fly challenge for micro-aerial vehicles, an Engineers Without Borders challenge and other hands-on activities. Global Opportunities RMIT has an international exchange program agreement with Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, China (NUAA). Second year students are selected to attend NUAA from early September to the middle of January. You will gain credit points for your studies, which will include elementary Chinese, aerodynamics, design of aircraft and structural design and optimisation. In the final year of your studies you will undertake a major project that is either industry-based or simulates an industrial situation. You will work with industry leaders using the theory and practical experience gained through the program to solve a problem. In order to graduate from this program you must complete a minimum 12 weeks of engineering industry experience. This allows you to gain first-hand experience in an engineering practice environment under the supervision of a practising professional engineer. The nature and timing of this engineering experience can take a range of forms. Opportunities exist for an overseas work placement of between six and 12 months (this satisfies the work experience requirement). These placements are normally taken during a one-year break in the middle or at the end of the third year of the degree. The most likely destinations for graduates are: design and manufacturing companies including Boeing Australia, Airbus, BAE Systems Australia and Australian Aerospace defence forces: Royal Australian Navy, Australian Army and Royal Australian Air Force Defence Science and Technology Organisation and Defence Materiel Organisation Australian and international airlines airworthiness organisations: Civil Aviation Safety Authority and Department of Defence general aviation. Aerospace engineers also gain skills in various fields of advanced technology that are in high demand in non-aerospace organisations, including the automotive industry, power generation industry, software support companies, and research organisations. This program is fully accredited by Engineers Australia. Graduates of the program are eligible for graduate membership of Engineers Australia. Full membership as a professional engineer may be obtained after an appropriate period of professional practice. Australia is one of 15 countries that are signatories to the International Engineering Alliance, also known as the Washington Accord, for professional engineers. The qualification of graduates from this degree is recognised in all countries that are signatories to the Accord. Units 3 and 4 a study score of at least 25 in Mathematical Methods (CAS) and a study score of at least 25 in any English (except EAL) or at least 30 in English (EAL). 13 Aerospace Engineering and Aviation 13 Bachelor of Engineering (Aerospace Engineering) (Honours) and Bachelor of Business (Management) double degree RMIT Code: BH082...FT5* V T 2015 Clearly-in ATAR: CITY AND BUNDOORA CAMPUSES* This program combines aerospace engineering with business skills, so you will be prepared for leadership roles in an exciting global industry. Aerospace engineering is concerned with the analysis, design and operation of sophisticated aerospace hardware and software systems. The term aerospace encompasses both atmospheric and space flight. The industry is complex and demanding, and requires talented, creative and motivated people. To succeed in this program, you will need welldeveloped skills in mathematics and physical sciences, as well as good communication skills. Management is concerned with organisational planning, coordination and resource direction. Managers draw on technical skills ranging from accounting to organisational behaviour, and are reliant on their analytical and leadership skills. Why Double Up? Many engineers quickly move into positions of management within organisations. This double degree will give you an advantage, allowing you to progress into positions of responsibility and influence. A business degree will prepare you to operate in a complex financial system one often associated with large engineering projects. * Years one, two and three are conducted at the City campus and years four and five are shared between the City and Bundoora campuses. The management component is studied at the City campus for all five years. The double degree is composed of core courses that cover material essential for all students in the program, and elective courses through which you may tailor your degree. Core discipline areas include: engineering design engineering practice engineering professional development engineering sciences business courses. These studies are contained within the aerospace disciplines of: aerodynamics aerospace materials and structures aerospace propulsion aerospace systems design dynamics and control engineering project management mathematics professional skill development structural analysis thermodynamics. The specific focus on aerospace commences in the first semester. You will be trained to Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) standards to gain the skills required for a Commercial Pilots Licence. As well as the Commercial Pilot s Licence, you will also develop the necessary skills to apply for the Recreational Pilot Licence, the Air Transport Pilot Licence and the Private Pilot s Licence. Civil and infrastructure engineers plan, design, construct, supervise, manage and maintain the essential infrastructure of our modern community. They aim to be responsive to wider community needs and reflective of the values that relate to the economic, environmental and social impacts of projects. Civil and infrastructure engineers work with the environment, using natural resources for the benefit of the community. The program emphasises work experience and project-based learning. A broad range of electives means you can customise your studies to suit your interests. Graduates acquire good interpersonal skills, a solid understanding of engineering theory, and the ability to apply learning and knowledge to a wide range of situations. RMIT aims to provide innovative learning experiences with a strong emphasis on communication, teamwork and leadership. Year One The first year introduces key graduate capabilities in sustainability, problem solving, engineering analysis, teamwork, leadership and communications. You will extend your mathematical skills to gain some basic concepts around engineering applications. Year Two The second year focuses on the big theoretical ideas around practical engineering, including site investigation, geotechnical, water and transport engineering, and more structural engineering and mathematical modelling. Years Three and Four The third and four years cover the application areas of structures, water resources, geomechanics and transport. Specialisation and diversification in these years is also possible. Sub-disciplines include: construction/project management: civil infrastructure projects geotechnical: earthworks, tunnels, dams and ground improvement structural: bridges, power stations, sports stadiums, towers, factories and other large buildings transport: roads, railways, airports, canals and harbours water resources: water supply, wastewater treatment, protection of coasts and river banks. The program also maintains an environmental sustainability focus, in line with continuing trends in the global engineering profession. Graduates are employed as project managers, design engineers, construction managers, environmental engineers and engineering asset managers. The program has strong links with industry, organisations and departments concerned with civil engineering, and relationships are established between students and organisations through project-based teaching modes used in a number of courses. In the third and fourth years of your studies you will undertake major projects that are either industrybased or simulate an industrial situation. In order to graduate from this program you must complete a minimum 12 weeks of engineering experience. This allows you to gain first-hand experience in an engineering practice environment under the supervision of a professional engineer. The nature and timing of this engineering experience can take a range of forms. Opportunities exist for an overseas work placement of between six and 12 months (this satisfies the work experience requirement). These placements are normally taken during a one-year break in the middle or at the end of the third year of the degree. Student Profile I was drawn to RMIT because it is a highly regarded institution for engineering and it offers a pathway from TAFE to university. I articulated into the degree program from the Advanced Diploma of Engineering Design where I was awarded the Jacobs Prize for top student in the program. Students have been placed in workplaces including engineering consulting companies, construction companies, government agencies, and local councils. You will also have the opportunity in year one to participate in an industry project run through Engineers Without Borders in your first year. Global Opportunities RMIT has civil and infrastructure engineering student exchange program agreements with a number of universities in the US, Canada, Europe and Asia. Optional tours are organised to Paris to study practical applications related to sustainable cities of the future. This program is fully accredited by Engineers Australia. Australia is one of 15 countries that are signatories to the International Engineering Alliance, also known as the Washington Accord, for professional engineers. The qualification of graduates from this degree is recognised in all countries that are signatories to the Accord. Pathways Graduates of the Associate Degree in Engineering Technology (Civil major) who achieve a grade point average (GPA) of 2.0 or greater are guaranteed entry with up to two years exemption (equivalent to 192 credit points). Graduates of the Advanced Diploma of Engineering Technology can apply and may be eligible to apply for exemptions if successful in gaining a place. The program gives us the technical knowledge to be confident when designing structures in industry, while group assignments, which are often simulations of a typical workplace project, help us to develop our interpersonal skills, working as a team to achieve a common goal. I get great satisfaction from providing a successful solution to a design challenge. In the future, I hope to work on projects around the world and one day look back on those iconic projects, proud to have been part of them.
