Title: DOUBLE TROUBLE 1 (OPENING MUSIC) BOOK: Today s story: Double Trouble. In the house just down the street and around the corner, the past seems to come alive in more ways than one. (Humming) La la la la. Hi - Yi! PROF: (laughs) Don t be frightened, Joy, this is just the skeleton of a dinosaur I m putting together. PROF: Would you kindly hand me another box of those bones, but be sure you don t drop it. PROF: PROF: Okay. (LIFTING) Um. (YELL) (YELL) Watch it! (YELL) Oh. Mmp! Whew! Chris, you hit me with the door when you opened it. But how could I know you were standing right in back of it? You were very lucky, because if Ruffles hadn t caught the box, it could have broken. PROF: Stop trying to blame me! Came on now, children, no more arguing. No harm s been done, I m Chris & Joy: Hmph! happy to say. RUFFLES: PROF: Arf, arf. You were such a good dog I m going to give you a present, Ruffles. I m going to do my homework.
Title: DOUBLE TROUBLE 2 Wait. Hmm. What are you following me for? I thought you might want to ask me to play some badminton when you re finished with your homework. If you want to play, let s do it now. No, not until you finish. Aw - Ah! Superbook! JOY & Ohhh. BOOK: Hmmm. It looks like a story about two brothers?! Today we re going to visit Jacob and Esau. And you re right, they are brothers. In fact, they re twin brothers. BOOK: They re twins? Where do Jacob and Esau live? They live in ancient Beersheba. If you re ready, Let s go. (Music) Umf! Uh! Bump. Mmm -- This must be Beer-sheba, don t you think, Chris? I guess so. It looks kind of familiar. Look at those tents. I don t see Jacob and Esau. I don t see any people. Mmmmmm -- Attention. Alien approaching. Where? North by northwest. It s a man!
Title: DOUBLE TROUBLE 3 Man with spring, running down. I think you re right, Gizmo. Look! He s falling! (GASP) He must need help. Di-di, di-di. To the rescue. Ten - four, Di-di, di-di, di-di. (LOOKING UP) Hmm? What s going on? Hey, are you hurt or something, mister? Please, give me food. We don t have any food, I m afraid. I ll find some for you if I can. Esau. What s the matter? Jacob, will you please give me something to eat? Yes, I will. But first, let s get you over to my tent, Esau. (STRAINING) Umm Hold on. ESAÜ: (FALLING) Hmm Easy. (SOFTLY) They must be the two brothers we saw in the picture at home, Chris. Right. Please hurry. Ahhh. Thank you, Jacob, thank you. Mm. What s the matter? Listen. You ve got to make a vow to me that you ll give me your birthright before you can have any of this food. Hm? Ha! What blessed good is a birthright to someone who s starving to death? I ll make any kind of a vow that you want right now, just to get that stew. Give it to me. (EATING SOUNDS)
Title: DOUBLE TROUBLE 4 Hmmmm. I feel rotten about this. But birthrights are so unfair! Why should Esau inherit everything from father just because he s the oldest son? Jacob, is Esau better? Yes, Esau s going to be just fine. Thanks very much for trying to help him. I ll bet he just needed some home cooking. Well, Esau happens to be a great hunter and spends all of his time in the mountains. He stayed too long and ran out of food. He was barely able to make it home today. Incidentally, I m not sure you and I have met. I guess you aren t from around Beer-sheba. REBECCA No, sir, I m not. Jacob! Jacob, do you know where Esau is? Why, yes, mother, he came back from the mountains and I m giving him lunch in my tent. Would you please ask him to come over here because his father wants to talk to him right away. Did you hear that, Esau? Yes, be there in a minute. Thank you, Jacob. Why, you ve been travelling all day; you must be starving, too. How about some of my stew? Oh, thanks a lot. You betcha! Esau, is that you? Yes. Come in, son.
Title: DOUBLE TROUBLE 5 ISAAC Father -- I m here. Oh, son -- I can t see you any more. I fear I haven t much longer to live. I m so old. Oh, father, you ll be with us for many days yet to come, I m sure. Um - hum. No, only a few. That s why I am asking a favor of my son. To do something to please you, father, would certainly make me happy. Mmm. Can you tell me what s my favorite meal? Yes, father, it s venison stew. Well, I ve just got to have venison stew once more before I die, So I ll strike a bargain with you. You catch the deer and cook the stew and I ll give you a special blessing. All right? Thank you, father. Um - hm. You know I d do it happily, blessing or not. Dear God, let this blessing make up for the birthright I traded. Father, I m going to catch the fattest deer in the forest and make you the best venison stew you ever tasted. Good luck, son. Isaac always favored Esau. It isn t fair. More, please? Good appetite. Me too. Hey, one at a time, but I m flattered that you like my cooking so much.
Title: DOUBLE TROUBLE 6 Son --- Jacob, come. (GRUNT) Why, mother, what is it? I can t tell you here. Come. All right, all right. Hey, have we met that lady somewhere before? Yeah, why, I think it s Rebecca. Ohh, that s who it is. Then Isaac must be the father of the twins. No, Rebecca, was much, more young. Yes, of course. The last time we met her she was just getting ready to marry Isaac, remember? Right. YOUNG Rebecca: (GIGGLES) My name s Rebecca. BETHUEL: OMNES: MOTHER: LABAN: Good luck! Here, here! Be a good wife to Isaac. God bless you. Bye, Bye. Bye. And then, Isaac and Rebecca were married. Listen. That s what I heard him say. Jacob, it isn t right because I was told by the Lord before were even born that your father s blessings rightly belong to you. Mother, there s no need for you to be concerned because Esau has already made a trade with me for his birthright. His birthright?
Title: DOUBLE TROUBLE 7 He exchanged his birthright for a bowl of some stew. Oh. But I ve got a feeling that your father s giving this blessing to make sure that Esau will inherit everything anyway. But, mother, you told me that God once said he s supposed to leave it to me. Listen... Jacob, I have a plan but you have to do exactly what I tell you to. All right? Ah, all right. Here s what you have to do. Bring me two young goats out of the flock and I ll make your father s favorite dish. You ll bring the stew to your father and your brother s special blessing will then be yours. Esau may return any minute now, son, so go, be quick. All right. Good luck. My memory bank, cannot believe, the sweet Rebecca, we knew and loved, could pull a sneaky trick, such as this. Mine, either. I think that Esau should hear about this, but I really don t know where he might be. GIZMO We ll, let s stop wasting time and go look. Ten - four! Di di, d, di di, d, di di, d, di di, di di. What s that! You! Wait a second. Uh - oh. Ump. (WHISPER) Don t let on we know her.
Title: DOUBLE TROUBLE 8 C AND J: Okay. Hello. My name s Rebecca. Hi. I think I must - know you. No. Are you sure we haven t met somewhere? I don t think so. REBECCA Why --- CHRIS C AND J: We come from the north. We come from the south. Uh. We come from another place. Oh, yes, of course, I remember. You re Christopher and Joy. (SOUNDS) How strange, you must have discovered how to stay young. I m a lot older. That s because, because, because, because you really met our mother and father you never met us before. Yeah, that s true. I m the son of Christopher and she s the daughter of Joy, right? Right, Chris, Junior! Oh, I see. But what about you? I am the clone, of Gizmo one. Oh??? (SEVEN LAUGHS) (LAUGH) (ECHO?) Oh, Esau!! Esau! Esau!!
Title: DOUBLE TROUBLE 9 Attention, attention, attention. There is Esau, north by northwest. (ECHO?) Esau, come back. Esau, we ve got to talk to you. Guess he can t hear us. He keeps getting too far. He is faster than speeding bullet. Yeah. What can we do? We ve lost him. Guess all we can do is go back and try to stop his father from giving Jacob his blessing. Esau, fails to catch, one deer yet. Perhaps Jacob, fails to catch, two goats yet. Right. There s still a chance we can get back to Isaac s tent before it s too late. Yeah. Father. Mm?! Father, are you awake? I ve brought you your favorite dish, venison stew. Who is that talking? Why uh it s uh me, Esau. I can t see you out there. Move in. How quickly you ve come. I know. Uh, I was so anxious to please you, I hurried as fast as I could. Your voice sounds like Jacob s voice. Are you really Esau? Come here. Let me put my hands on you.
Title: DOUBLE TROUBLE 10 Why, of course. Ah, that s right. And surely this is Esau s hairy arm. I m sorry for doubting, my son, but I don t trust Jacob. Here s your stew, father. Ah, thank you, thank you, son. Mm.. hm. I mustn t let father see my face. I feel rotten about fooling him like this --- putting goat skins on my neck and arms, but I want that inheritance. Ah, the stew was delicious. Now come. Kneel by my side. Oh yes. Now, Esau, I will give you my special blessing. I proclaim that my place as the head of the family shall according to custom pass to you, son, after I m gone. Before God I name you master of all my lands and worldly goods and may God bless you and bring you harvests of plenty. Go, and prosper. YENTA: YENTA: YENTA: Mother! Where are you, mother? Hello, neighbor. Hello, Jacob, you look very happy. Ha. Well, I am. Because father has just now given me a blessing. Oh, is that right? Good for you. Excuse me, I want to tell my mother the good news right away. GASP (TURNING) Mm? Aw! See, it s already too late. Nuts. Rats!!! It looks like, we have missed, the boat. (Music)
Title: DOUBLE TROUBLE 11 GIZM0: C AND J: Esau: ESAÜ: Hmmm, Wish there was something I could do to help. Yeah. Look. Huh? Alien approaching. Possibly Esau. Yeah... It is! Esau! Esau! Hurry up, Esau! We ve been looking for you. We ve got something to tell you. Sorry, children, I can t talk to you now. But it s important. Emergency. Emergency. Hahahaha. I d like to play your games with you but I m too busy now! But, but.. Oh, hey, wait. Sorry, I have to go and see my father. OMNES: Awwwwwww -- Don t lie to me!! Are you trying to tell me that you re Esau? But it s true, father. Jacob must have tricked you into believing him before. And blessing him as well. Ahhhhh! No, no, no. I m so sorry, my son. How could he do this? Has he taken everything from me? Father, don t you have some blessings left over that you can give to me? Please sir. Isn t there something? Mm? Hm-um., hm-um.
Title: DOUBLE TROUBLE 12 Nothing? (SOBS) There is nothing I can do. I don t have anything left to give you but my love, I m afraid. YENTA: YENTA: YENTA: I have been betrayed. Betrayed! Esau, what in the world s the matter? Argh! Oh, dear, dear. Leave me alone! Isaac must have given everything to Jacob. No wonder he s upset. First Jacob stole my birthright from me, that was enough, but now he s stolen my father s blessing, when he knew all along it was meant to be mine, with his dirty tricks. That does it; after my father dies I m going to kill my brother, because I can t forgive him. Never. I can t. I ll kill Jacob, I swear. YENTA: (GASP) Ohh. I feel as if something awful s about to happen. Yes, so do I. I m afraid. Excuse me. Does anyone know, where we will sleep tonight? Well, I suspect we d better sleep here. Chris, do you think the brothers will have a fight? Well, I think Esau had a right to get mad. I think Jacob and Esau should share their father s wealth. That is true brotherhood. I think the love of money s the root of all evil. Yeah -- Look, Aliens assembling, in front of Jacob s tent. Those aren t aliens. That s Jacob and Rebecca.
Title: DOUBLE TROUBLE 13 YENTA: And that other lady s their neighbor. That s what he said. He s planning to kill you, Jacob, so be careful. Thank you for telling me. Well, mother. Come inside. Ah -- If Esau s really angry enough to kill, me, what am I going to do, mother? I have a plan. Listen. I m frightened. So, I want you to leave tomorrow and go away to Your uncle Laban s house. No, all the way to my uncle s house? Yes, son. You ve got to stay away til your brother has a chance to calm down. And I will let you know when it s altogether certain that it s safe for you to come back. Ahh -- I ve brought you such trouble. I m sorry. No, son. It was all my idea, tricking your father into thinking it was Esau who brought him the stew. This is all my fault. Now, I was willing to do almost anything, whatever would help me take Esau s blessing away from him. It s nobody s fault save my own. Yes, but I allowed you to do it because I thought it was the will of God. I didn t have any idea that Esau cared so much about it. And I do love him. I don t want to lose either of you. Mother, I know you don t. But I think I should leave. Good heavens, how will I explain it to father? Well -- I ll go and speak to him first while you wait for me here. I ll be back in a few minutes. Bye. Rebecca, departing from Jacob s tent, heading for Isaac s tent.
Title: DOUBLE TROUBLE 14 Wonder what she s doing. Isaac, it s time for Jacob to marry, but there are no suitable girls around here. So, I would like to send him to visit Laban. I will ask my brother, to help Jacob to find a wife. So may he go? I told him I would ask you. Mm. Bring him here. I ll speak to him. Yes. Jacob has wronged his brother Esau. Perhaps Rebecca is right to send him away. Jacob? Come here. Yes, sir. Forgive me for my treachery, father. (AS HE KNEELS) Please, sir. Will you let me go away? All right - you have my permission to go to your Uncle Laban s where I hope you will find a good woman to be your wife. CHILDREN: BOOK: Thank you. I hope I will, father. I ll leave tomorrow. Goodbye, father. Goodbye, son. Goodbye, Jacob. I ll send you word. Soon, I hope. Thanks for everything, mother. Goodbye. Goodbye, Jacob. Goodbye. Two brothers, now go, separate ways. Too bad. Yeah. Hope they re gonna be friends again some day. Brothers should be friends, especially twins. Well, Jacob left Beer-sheba not to return for many years. Butwhen he did, Esau was happy to see him and received him with open arms. The brothers were friends once more. (Music) RUFFLES: (barking)
Title: DOUBLE TROUBLE 15 Huh? Is that you, Ruffles? Wow, you look beautiful! (KISS) Where do you think Ruffles got this ribbon, Joy? Musta been his reward. (GIGGLE) Ha. You mean, this is the present my father promised you? Haha. Some present, wasn t it, Ruffles? Hey, you promised me a game of badminton, Joy. Okay. Our homework can wait until we get some fresh air. Fresh air is important. RUFFLES: Get it, Ruffles. That was a good shot. Get this. (barks) I might as well not be here if he d rather play with Ruffles instead of playing with me. Hey, I ll bet you can t get this one. Good dog! Stop! Hey! What s the big idea? You re spoiling our game. Yeah?? (REACT) What about my game, huh? Hey, cut it out! I haven t been waiting around all day just to watch you play with your dog! PROF: BOOK: Yii! Mm? Ohhh - Tsk, tsk, tsk. Arguments, large or small, spell trouble. Some-times, doubletrouble. Peace be with you. (CLOSING MUSIC)
