1 1 HARRISON COUNTY PONY LEAGUE BASEBALL COACHING TIPS FOR PINTO LEAGUE One of the key attributes all coaches must have is the ability to communicate their ideas and instructions to their players. A coach must therefore have the ability to communicate and connect to everyone they come into contact with within their role (players, other coaches, parents, ect.) Keep it fun for the kids. Remember that their attention spans are typically short. This is definitely not the Pros, but we want to provide the best possible learning environment for the game of baseball. Don t let it be frustrating for you. Keep it positive. Winning is not the most important aspect at this stage of the game (Shetland/Pinto League). We are teachers and facilitators of the game of baseball. One of the best things we can do as coaches is to have a plan. Like a teacher in the classroom with their lesson plan. What I like to do is write out my practice plan then I know what I want to cover in the time frame (60 to 90 minutes long). Your plan should consist of stations. A station is a group of players and 1 or 2 coaches. The term station refers to whatever skill is being worked on during that time frame. You will need help to cover these stations. Take advantage of your assistant coaches and parents that want to help out. You will be training the parents as well on how to help out with the drills/stations, and they just might work with the player at home as well. An example of fielding stations includes: 1. Fielding ground balls in the infield. 15 minutes 5 players, 1 coach, 1 parent catching in for coach. 2. Catching fly balls in out field grass. Use tennis balls for less skilled players/baseballs for more advanced kids. 15 minutes 5 players, 1 coach, 1 parent catching in for the coach.

2 2 When you let your players take a water break use this time to add some instruction as a group. Don t let the water break become a free for all for them to horseplay or a time for you to make a phone call for 10 minutes. A good idea might be to talk to them about the proper fundamentals of swinging the bat, fielding a ground ball, or a technique that is used for catching a fly ball. Go over what you have been doing in practice so far and what you are going to do next. A good practice should seem to be over quick. If you use stations in your practice sessions, you will keep everyone active and the opportunity to learn aspects of the game of baseball will only improve. One of the worst practice scenarios is when a coach decides to throw batting practice to 1 batter at a time. There is no on deck batter, the coach can t get the ball over the plate, no one to pick up the balls, and the rest of the players are standing around in the field. This type of practice makes the game of baseball boring. So please, be creative in your practice sessions. Use a variety of stations that cover hitting, throwing, catching, fielding, and game type scenarios. You can also rotate your coaches and volunteers to different stations each practice so they can learn the various stations. The game of baseball is best learned through repetition. So if you want to keep the practice session fun while using Stations, then try to keep them around 15 minutes max for the players sake. Stay positive and definitely give praise to your players when they do these stations correctly or when they show improvement. Remember not all players have the same skill levels, but all players need consistent praise and encouragement.

3 3 PRACTICE SESSION EXAMPLE = 90 minutes 1. Coach arrives early to make sure everything is set such as rake the field, set the bases, and get baseball equipment ready for practice. 2. Players arrive and coach gets his players ready to begin practice. Coach talks to the team about what he plans on covering today. 5 minutes 3. Coach has players begin practice with a warm-up that might consist of jogging around the field, calisthenics, stretching, or some form of running. 10 minutes 4. Throwing with partner. Have each player get a partner and 1 baseball. I would put players together based on their abilities rather than the buddy system. Explain to them the proper fundamentals of throwing and catching 1 st. Put the team in parallel lines. Each 2 player group needs adequate space between other groups for safety. You may have them start out at approximately 15 feet apart depending on the age and skill level. They can gradually move farther apart if they are successful at this distance. The coaches need to look for proper throwing technique during this time. Now is the best time to correct these mistakes. If you don t do it here, the kid will suffer later. Any overthrows are to be picked up and run back in the line. You don t want a kid throwing a wild throw from a great distance because it s not safe. Another safety tip is to make sure the kids are not trying to throw as hard as they can. The goal is to throw the ball accurately to your target. Coaching Tips for thrower: Teach proper gripping of the baseball (four seam fastball is best), Teach the player to point the front shoulder toward the target and stepping toward the target as well, think elbow alignment throwing arm and glove side elbow, proper follow through. Coaching Tips for the receiver: Have the player that is catching the ball to hold his glove about chest height as this is the target. His stance should be shoulder width apart (balanced stance). Have him work on 2 hands on

4 4 the glove as this technique leads to a quicker release in game situations and it s a more successful way to catch the ball. 10 minutes 5. Ground Ball Fielding Stations = 2 stations 1 coach/6 players each 15 minutes Begin by explaining and demonstrating the proper technique of fielding a ground ball. You can use the phrase, field the ball like an alligator. A. One group of 6 kids will field ground balls between 1 st and 2 nd base. They will field the ground ball and make a throw to 1 st base. B. Another group of 6 kids will field ground balls between 2 nd and 3 rd base and make a throw to 3 rd base. C. You should rotate who is catching the ball at 1 st and 3 rd base. Ready position: Weight evenly distributed, feet wider than shoulder width, knees bent Extend arms downward into the path of the ball. Watch the ball into your glove Cover the ball with throwing hand after ball enters glove. (Looks like a set of "Alligator Jaws") Cradle the ball into chest area Transfer ball into throwing hand and point non-throwing shoulder to target Follow through with the throwing arm across your body

6 6 1. Fly ball catching stations = 4 stations 4 coaches or parents/3 players each 15 minutes Begin by explaining and demonstrating the proper technique for catching a fly ball. Work with all of your players on the following fly-ball basics: Line your throwing side up with the ball. Get your glove up in-line with the ball with your fingers pointing to the sky. Elbows are bent and relaxed (do not extend arms straight to catch ball). Catch the ball in front of your head off the throwing side of the body. Catch the ball with one hand (glove), covering the ball in your glove with your bare hand. Position glove close to top of head on throwing shoulder. When catching a ball in the sun, try to adjust angle to play ball out of the sun. Use either the glove or the throwing hand to shield the sun while tracking the ball. Coaching Tip: Start young kids with very soft and light balls to help eliminate their fear of the ball. For example, use a tennis ball to teach catching with two hands with palms facing away from body and fingers up. You could put the groups together based on skill level or you could rotate each group to each of the 4 stations. IMPORTANT: Have the player catching the fly ball to call it out. He may say I got it or mine, mine, mine. A. Group # 1 3 kids will catch fly balls between 1 st and 2 nd base. B. Group # 2 3 kids will catch fly balls between 2 nd and 3 rd base. C. Group # 3 3 kids will catch fly balls in Right Field. D. Group # 4 3 kids will catch fly balls in Left Field.

8 8 1. Hitting the Baseball When teaching kids how to hit a baseball, the most important principle you have to keep in mind is to keep things simple. Kids get bored with long speeches and they easily lose interest when you confuse them. It is also important to consider that not all kids have equal amounts of capability when it comes to batting, throwing, or catching. It goes without saying that some will have a more natural talent for baseball than others. HITTING Batting -- the stance, swing and follow-through Bend knees, body in slight crouch. Weight on balls of feet. Grip bat; hands together above knob. Hold bat firmly; don't squeeze. Bring bat up and away from the body. Keep shoulders level; bat and head steady. Eyes on the ball. Short step with the front foot at start of swing. Swing level and bring the bat through the center of the ball. Watch bat hit ball; keep head down. Weight shifts to front foot; back foot stays on the ground. Extend arms and follow through; swing around. Drop the bat; do not throw it Key points: eyes on the ball no cross-handed hold position of feet stride [weight shift] rotation the swing

9 9 Hitting Stations = 2 stations 1 coach with 6 players each A. Station #1 at home plate 1 hitter and the other 5 players are fielding the balls from a safe distance, then making a throw to the coach or parent volunteer minutes B. Station #2 in outfield (safe distance from station #1, may be in right field if you have right handed hitters at station #1) 1 hitter and the other players are fielding the balls from a safe distance, then making a throw to the coach or parent volunteer. *This would be a good station to use whiffle balls to build the confidence of the hitter.* C. Station #3 in outfield (safe distance from station #1 and can be done where hitter is hitting ball into fence) 1 hitter and 1 coach or parent volunteer Have the hitter hit off a tee if the hitter is struggling to use proper hitting techniques. I have learned over the years that this is a valuable exercise to help hitters at the Pinto level. 1. Running the bases (If time remains in your practice session) A. Home to 1 st base running straight through the bag. B. Home to 2 nd base taking the proper angle when you reach 1 st base and heading to 2 nd base. You can also practice stopping after you have made turn to 2 nd to return to 1 st base. C. 1 st base to 2 nd base on a fly ball. You are teaching them about tagging up or getting a secondary lead before deciding if the ball is caught in the air or if the ball is not caught therefore the runner may advance. Coaching Tips: Use a base coach on 1 st base. 1 st base coach is vocal and uses non-verbal signs to communicate to the baserunner. Use commands such as straight through the bag, turn and look, go to 2 nd base.

10 10 1. Situational Play (After players start to get the basic fundamentals and techniques of throwing, catching, and running; you need to start teaching situation play.) A. Take 9 of your players and put them in the field, making sure to fill each position. Have a few coaches or parent volunteers go out in the field with the defense to help show the players proper positioning at each position. (In between hitters have a coach/parent volunteer that is in the outfield throw a baseball to the outfielders to keep them from getting bored) B. Have the remainder of your players bat as if they would in an actual game. You may want to have a coach or parent volunteer keep the players in the dugout organized during this drill. C. Have the coach that throws the most strikes, pitch and allow the hitters to hit as if it was an actual game (Coach can even throw from 1 knee to the kids that are struggling to hit the baseball). Have the hitter run the bases as hitter would in a game. (This is a good way of teaching situational running as well. Be clear in explaining what the runner should do before each at bat.) Example: 1 out + Runner on 1 st Base + Pop Fly to Left Field=Runner advances part way between 1 st and 2 nd watching to see if ball is caught. Coach should process with runner after situation to make sure runner understands the situation. D. Have the coach pitching and/or the coaches/parent volunteers on the field explain what the defense should do before each at bat. Be clear in explaining what the defensive player/s should do. Example: 2 outs + No one on base=play is at 1 st base for Infield/Play is at 2 nd Base for Outfield

11 11 Coach should process with the defense after situation to make sure defense understands the situation. E. As the Defense gains a better understanding of the different situations of baseball: ask instead of tell the players what they should do from situation to situation.
