The Tile Industry s New Product Sustainability Certification Program Overview
Understanding Green Squared SM Introduction and Purpose The Standard Certification Implications
What is Green Squared SM? A sustainable productcertification program which can be applicable to tiles and tile installation materials manufactured in all parts of the world A mechanism for recognizing products which are in conformance with the industry s new product sustainability standard, ANSI A138.1 The North American tile industry s consensus interpretation for how to evaluate and validate product sustainability The tile industry s integration of leading North American sustainability principles into an established and well-understood benchmark for products
Purpose of Green Squared SM? To establish measurable market-based definitions for tiles and installation materials which are most sustainable To develop a widely acknowledged mechanism for determining and communicating which products meet these definitions To direct market focus towards a single, credible, and open multi-attribute assessment of sustainable products and minimize varying and often misunderstood single attribute sustainability claims To provide guidance to producers, purchasers, and policy makers in their efforts to improve the environmental and social sustainability of products and services
ANSI A138.1 American National Standard Specifications for Sustainable Ceramic Tiles, Glass Tiles and Tile Installation Materials Voluntary standard, written by an ANSI Accredited Standards Committee (ASC A108) representing a diverse range of stakeholders: Green building community leaders Tile consumers Manufacturers Distributors Installers Several others
How it all started... What is a green/sustainable tile? Documented where and managed by who? What about tile adhesives? What about other installation products? What makes this product greener than that one? So many different stories! Who can I trust?
Things to consider... Perpetual/Inexhaustible Resources Zero VOCs Recycled Materials Human Health and Well-Being Energy Efficient Solutions History and Longevity
Things to consider... Environmental Impacts, Social Responsibility, Economic Realities Planet People Prosperity
Putting it all together... ANSI A138.1 Consensus standard for sustainable tiles and installation materials Evaluation of industry and its products throughout all lifecycle phases A clear industry position on what it means for a product to be green Clear, objective sustainability criteria which can be easily incorporated into specification and certification efforts Raw materials Product Attributes End of Life Manufacturing Installation and Maintenance

A prescribed (depending on type of product) quantity of electives are met. Freedom to choose electives Multi-attribute assessment Pre-requisites + Elective Options = Flexibility and Sustainability Optimization
Green Squared SM Certification Program Developed by TCNA as a way to ensure conformance with ANSI A138.1 through 3 rd party certification Intended to be the authentic, go-to strategy for certification to A138.1 Intended to provide market clarity as to which products go above/beyond self declaration to A138.1 True third party certification TCNA s owns logos and manages the program Independent certification agencies perform all evaluations and audits Program developed in accordance with ISO Type 1 Environmental labeling and declaration requirements (ISO 14024)
How the Green Squared Program is Structured Manufacturer submits a product for certification Manufacturer may utilize any certifying body which is recognized by the GreenSquared Certification Program Products verified to be in conformance with ANSI A138.1 are awarded the Green Squared Certified mark
TCNA s Licensing of Certification Bodies (CBs) Only CBs approved by TCNA are allowed to issue Green Squared certification Open to any certification organization which meets TCNA s criteria for CBs Operation pursuant to ISO/IEC Guide 65 Other criteria defined by TCNA s license agreement TCNA hosts summits and works routinely with industry members and CBs Education and promotion A138.1 technical interpretation Other Green Squared related issues Current participating CBs Underwriter Laboratories (UL) Environment Scientific Certification Systems (SCS) NSF International
How Green Squared SM certification works Manufacturer interested in having a product certified applies directly to an authorized Green Squared certification body, not TCNA.
How Green Squared SM certification works The certification process involves the following: General evaluation of the applicant organization Evaluation of conformance to ANSI A138.1 product requirements On-site facility evaluation
How Green Squared SM certification works Determination of certification made solely by certification body in accordance with ANSI A138.1 conformance determination guidelines (developed by TCNA and relevant stakeholders) Green Squared SM Certified All engineering judgments made by certification body Scope of certified products determined by certification body Any appeals made directly to certification body
How Green Squared SM certification works Certification rulings communicated to TCNA in clear and efficient manner so that databases of certified products are kept consistent. Certifications are valid for a three year period; surveillance audit performed each year within these three years. Once the three year period has expired, re-certification is required.
One Industry-Recognized Mark Products certified under the Green Squared program are allowed use of the Green Squared Certified mark Only allowed on products verified by an authorized CB to be in conformance with ANSI A138.1 Can only be used in conjunction with certified products, not other non-certified products even if produced by the same manufacturer Can only be used within a product s valid certification time period Use of the mark awarded by certification bodies, not TCNA Right to use the mark may be withdrawn by a certification body or TCNA if product is found not to be in conformance with ANSI A138.1 or the Green Squared Program Criteria
How the Green Squared Certified mark may be used Where? Directly on certified products On product packaging on cartons belonging to certified products Promotional literature published about a certified product as long as in direct correlation with that product Color and sizing standards outlined in VERIFIED BY (Certification Body) VERIFIED BY (Certification Body) Green Squared Certification Program Criteria Manufacturer may choose to use a color or plain black version of the certified logo Manufacturer may choose to include identification of the independent certification body which performed the certification VERIFIED BY Certification Body s Logo VERIFIED BY Certification Body s Logo
The Green Squared Service Mark May be used by certification bodies to advertise their participation in Green Squaredif authorized by TCNA May not be used by a manufacturer in conjunction with a product May not be used to imply endorsement of a manufacturer by TCNA or the Green Squared program May be used by an authorized certification body or their Green Squared certification clients to: Communicate about the Green Squared program Providing education through workshops, seminars and training relevant to the program To promote the Green Squared program and services relevant to the program
Next Steps and Timeline for Green SquaredCertification Program Manufacturers already working with authorized certification bodies Announcement of very first group of Green Squared Certifiedproducts to be made in early April, 2012 Major news item for Coverings 2012
What does Green Squared SM mean for the tile industry moving forward? A simple, industry-recognized mechanism for determining product sustainability Ease of product specification Consistency in green marketing Consistency in evaluation to and Interpretation of A138.1 A credible program managed by true sustainability experts and relevant stakeholders Unified North American tile industry position for what it means for a product to be green Smooth, clear and responsiblestrategy for expanding the market for tile products in green building projects
Driving the need for Green Squared... Architectural Sustainability Initiatives Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) International Green Construction Code (IGCC) Federal Initiatives; Executive Order Other Green Building Programs State and Local Mandates for Sustainable Products (e.g. Initiatives in California and Pennsylvania) Increase in Consumer Awareness
LEED in 2012 and Beyond... Potential rewarding of points to building projects using products which are certified to meet multiattribute sustainability standards
LEED Pilot Credit 43: MR-Certified Products Credit Compliance Pathways Products with Certification(s) A: Single Attribute Certification Weight = 50% B: Type I Environmental Label (Multi-Attribute Certification) Weight = 100% C: Type I label based on Type III EPD Weight = 200% Products with EPDs(Environmental Product Declaration) A: Self-Declared LCA Weight = 50% B: Third Party Certified Type III EPD: Industry-Wide Weight = 100% C: Third Party Certified Type III EPD: Product-Specific Weight = 200%
LEED Pilot Credit 43 Multi-Attribute Product Certification Option Type I Environmental Label/Certification Certification Pathway Option B, 100% weighting Voluntary, multi-attribute based 3 rd party certification to a standard or labeling program that has been developed with ISO and life cycle considerations as its basis; general indication of environmental preferability among similar products Example: NSF 140 Carpet Standard, NSF 332 Resilient Floor Standard, Green Squared (potentially)
Putting things in perspective what Pilot Credit 43 means for the tile industry Currently, an additional opportunity for tile products to contribute to a LEED point as the concept is being piloted Green Squared products 100% weighted value, direct contribution to 10% building material goal Will more than likely become a permanent credit in most of the LEED rating systems Historically revisions made to LEED rating systems have been mirrored by other green architectural specifications and initiatives
International Green Construction Code (IGCC) Green Building Code for Commercial Buildings Similar to other U.S. Codes (Plumbing, Electrical, Etc.) Enforceable language and criteria; strong influence on sustainable product specification Potentially, non-voluntary; The law if adopted by a jurisdiction Effective March 2012 The need for product industry sustainability standards and other specification tools will increase as future revisions are made
U.S. Executive Order Recovery Act, 2009 Preferential treatment for sustainable products GSA building project specifications Consideration of products which meet industry green standards
In Summary Green Squared, the North American tile industry s new product sustainability program, establishes measurable and verifiable criteria for products and serves as a valuable tool for producers, purchasers and policy makers. ANSI A138.1, the standard upon which Green Squaredis based, addresses social and environmental multi-attribute sustainability for products throughout their entire life cycle. Products certified under the Green Squared program are allowed use of the Green Squared Certified mark, providing market clarity as to which products are truly in conformance with ANSI A The establishment of Green Squared/ANSI A138.1 facilitates the identification of tile products which possess the full range of social and ecological attributes most important to the North American green building community, resulting in improved product specification and increased market clarity.
