1 HST252: Development of Japanese Civilization 2 Instructor: Sven Saaler (saaler@sophia.ac.jp) COURSE DESCRIPTION The primary purpose of this course is to provide you with a survey of modern Japanese history. Our main goal is to see how Japan evolved as a modern nation-state since the mid-19th century and to gain insights into major patterns and themes that characterize the development of modern Japan and Japan s rise to a regional and global power. Furthermore, this survey of Japan s modern history shall enable you to bring a more discerning eye to your understanding of contemporary Japan, which is in diverse ways shaped by its historical experience. Lastly, this course is intended to impart some notion of what historiography as an intellectual discipline is. We ask questions about the past that are inseparable from our present personal, social, cultural and political experiences. It is our individual interest that leads this dialog with the past and that makes history a multi-dimensional and contested endeavor. Course Materials: As the basic textbook we will use James L. McClain: Japan. A Modern History. New York and London: W.W. Norton, Additional readings (sources and articles) will be made available on Moodle. For each class, the instructor additionally has listed, next to the required readings, online accessible visual and primary sources such as the homepage of an important history museum, a documentary movie or an online archive/collection of historical sources. These sources are not going to be used in class (two exceptions are marked in bold in the schedule below), but students are strongly encouraged to explore these resources as a part of their preparation for classes. Student Evaluation: Students grades will be determined by a midterm and a final test, class participation, and writing assignments. The grade distribution is as follows: Midterm test: 30% (essay) Final test: 30% (essay) (three) writing assignments: 30% Class participation and quizzes (short essays): 10% Missed Tests or Deadlines: Unless there is a valid, documented medical reason, students who miss an exam will receive a zero for this part of their grade. Class Participation: No credit will be given for class attendance. However, you can improve your grade by actively participating in class. 1
