1 Thompson Instrumental Music How To Be A GREAT LEADER! Learning Goals and Feedback 1. I will clearly communicate in a professional and positive manner all the time. 2. I will gain an understanding of what the different levels of articulations look and sound like. 3. I will reinforce and support the class learning goals. 4. I understand the things I do in class are designed to help me achieve the learning goal. 5. I need to talk about the learning goals often. 6. I need to create personal and team goals throughout the year. 7. Posting goals / charts will help my section improve and have fun. 8. I will encourage everyone to share their feelings to be better musicians and people. 9. I can explain to others our specific learning goals and how they relate to each members improvement. 10. I know how my section as a whole is progressing towards our goals. 11. Our performance and attitude are a direct reflection of my leadership and work ethic. 12. I will figure out different ways to praise members when they achieve a goal. 13. I will recognize success beyond the class for the members in my section. 14. I will compliment all students who grow, regardless of their final score. 15. I will celebrate the final status of other sections and groups in the program.!1

2 16. I ensure my section communicates to their parents about class activities. Rules and Procedures 1. I will model professional behavior and be a roll model at all times. 2. I clearly communicate rules and expectations for my section. 3. If my section doesn t follow the rules, I will talk about it with them and make plans to solve it. 4. We are all responsible to help make classroom rules and procedures work. 5. We can use and develop appropriate hand signals, gestures, or phrases to help students follow the rules. 6. I ensure that the band room is an organized and clean place. 7. The band room is set up (e.g., stands, chairs, etc) for learning. 8. The practice rooms / storage rooms are organized; I don t fall over things and it s not overcrowded. 9. I make sure we can always see and hear the director / coach. 10. We can find the supplies and music we need. 11. I help display things on the walls that are helpful in learning. 12. I will promote the band room as a professional place to learn and promote the enjoyment of music. New Information 1. I will remind my section about the most important information. 2. I will remind and repeat the music vocabulary used in our lessons. 3. I take notice of the more important information for learning. 4. I will be excited and detailed when I teach.!2

3 5. I can explain why certain information is the more important then others. 6. When my director / coach presents information, I will appear excited, focused, and ready to learn. 7. I can ensure productive sectional work if asked. 8. When asked to teach new information, I can delegate work into a small group. 9. I understand that each student learns differently. It is important to find out how to work with them. 10. I will collaborate with other sections or groups to learn better. 11. When I work in a group, everyone will act respectfully. This includes verbal, physical, and other gestures. 12. I will make sure everyone is comfortable sharing opinions and asking questions in my section, at the right times. 13. I will help to build off of what they already know. (E.g., musical, marching, etc) 14. I will figure out fun activities to help talk about what I already know to ease tension and build skill. 15. I will use video or audio recordings to help in learning and cleaning, as approved the director. 16. If someone doesn t know something, I will make the time to go over it. 17. I try to stay ahead of each goal and/or lesson. 18. I will try to break down each lesson into smaller goals. 19. While teaching, I will stop and ask for clarification. 20. Setting time goals for each lesson goal will be helpful in sectionals. 21. I will stop in the middle of something to talk about a mistake as needed. 22. I will often check to see if my section understands their music and/or schedule. 23. I will know what to do if I am asked to talk in public.!3

4 24. I understand that some students need extra time to think about what they have learned. 25. I am expected to summarize what I have taught. (E.g., verbal, written) 26. I am expected to explain things to other students. 27. I will work with the leadership team to think of examples or concepts of what we are learning. 28. I am comfortable making and sharing predictions about what I am learning. 29. I am comfortable asking questions if I don t understand something. 30. I will be asked to learn things beyond the class. 31. I am asked to think about what we didn t talk about in class and research them. 32. I will be asked to professionally explain my thinking. 33. I understand, that in order to solve problems some do not have obvious solutions. 34. My director asks me to share learning using pictures, charts, and diagrams. 35. It is ok to summarize what I have learned using graphic organizers. Practicing and Deeping Knowledge 1. Starting each sectional warm-up, I will go over what we already know and move forward from there. 2. Each class / practice I will reinforce that all students in our program are here to help each other learn. 3. I understand why my director / coach asks me to work with other students. 4. I understand that I will be asked to do research or ask for help on how to give feedback to other students in our group. 5. I will make sure assigned homework is understood in my section. 6. I will reinforce the assigned homework by extra work with my section / group.!4

5 7. I am encouraged to think about how things are alike and how they are different. 8. I am encouraged to compare facts, details, objects, or vocabulary terms. 9. I will look for errors in the information I hear or read. 10. When I speak or write, my reasoning is logical and clear. 11. I am expected to practice things over and over until I get good at them with my section. 12. Our goal is to master the assignment in order to be provided with harder skills. 13. If there is a misunderstanding on an assignment, I am encouraged to ask the director / coach for clarification. 14. If I hear about social conflicts, the leadership team will work to figure out what is wrong. Applying Knowledge 1. I will provide leadership and help solve problems across all teams / sections. 2. I will cooperate well with others in this program. 3. I am expected to answer questions to help me figure out what kind of task is best for me, from my director. 4. I am always willing to help and provide guidance. 5. I work to get things I need to support my learning. 6. I feel comfortable telling the director when I need help or resources. Engagement 1. I will notice when other students are not interested and help them to be engaged in learning. 2. I will help make learning interesting. 3. If students are messing around, I will help provide a positive and engaging environment.!5

6 4. I will help to make this experience fun and rewarding for everyone! 5. I will help all members pay attention. 6. When we play games or compete in class, it is in the spirit of fun. 7. I will help everyone to participate in class discussions. 8. I will encourage everyone to play / march their show by themselves. 9. Even if the practice is slow and detailed in another section, I will help keep the focus. 10. I will demonstrate my love for the activity at all times! 11. I will encourage positive stories from past experiences supporting what we learn about. 12. We will never feel threatened or disrespected because of thoughts, ideas, or opinions. 13. I will provide an open dialogue with my section. 14. I want to understand how school connects in my sections general life and interests. 15. I will point out connections I learn in class that are applicable to the real world. 16. Using the interesting information my sectional tells helps me keep the section engaged in learning. Management 1. I will make sure my director / coach knows about everything that goes on in program. 2. I will help manage discipline while maintaining the focus of my section. 3. I will make eye contact when I teach or communicate. 4. Inappropriate behavior will not be tolerated. 5. I will be fair.!6

7 6. I will make notice when my section follows the rules. Relationships 1. I will get to know what life is like outside of school for members in my section. 2. I will greet my section every day and ask them how they are doing. 3. I will have self-control and not get upset. 4. Even though I am friendly, I will remain professional and in charge as the authority and role model in the program. Expectations 1. I believe everyone in the program can succeed. 2. I expect all members in the program to succeed. 3. Students in the program are not allowed to make negative comments about others. 4. I will encourage everyone to be at their best. 5.
