1 Create, Imagine, Play A pre-visit social narrative to enhance your Sensory Friendly Day visit Children s Museum of Winston-Salem Education Department Special thanks to ABC of NC Child Development Center for their assistance in developing this tool.

2 This story will tell me what I will see and do when I visit the Children s Museum of Winston-Salem. When I walk into the Museum, the first thing I will do is stand in line with my grownup to pay for our admission. I will wait my turn and be patient.

3 When it is our turn, the person working the Welcome Desk will stamp my hand if I would like them to. This stamp will wash off with soap and water. Next, I can hang up my coat. My grownup may put some of our belongings into a locker.

4 Next, I will choose what exhibits I would like to see. I will need to stay with my grownup and use my walking feet. If I am thirsty or hungry during my visit, we may eat a snack and have a drink in the Vending Area. The next pages of this story will tell me more about the exhibits I can see at the Children s Museum. An exhibit is a place where I can play, explore, learn, and have fun!

5 I can see the Luckey Climber from the Welcome Desk. I can take off my shoes and place them in the shoe cubbie if I would like to climb. In the Amazing Library I can read books, wear dress up clothes, or play with puzzles and games. This is a quiet place.

6 In Ice Venture I can skate in my socks, toss pretend snowballs, decorate a fabric snowman, or build with soft blocks. It is not cold or icy in Ice Venture! If I would like to play in this exhibit, I should take off my shoes and place them in the shoe cubbie.

7 Kaleidoscape is outdoors. Depending on the weather, I may want to wear my jacket. I can climb inside of this handmade playground. If there are other children climbing, it will gently move. The ropes above my head may make quiet chirping sounds. I will stay inside the gates.

8 There are three different ways to get to the second floor the stairs, the elevator, and the Beanstalk. I can climb the Beanstalk while my grownup climbs the stairs. The Beanstalk is very tall. It is okay to try to climb a few leaves and come back down. If I climb to the second floor, I will be able to step out of the Beanstalk.

9 In the Enchanted Forest I can play inside four small houses, take a ride in a boat that is not floating on water, or climb on a bridge. There are dress up clothes I can wear like bonnets, aprons, and hats.

10 In Animal Alphabet I can see letters of the alphabet. The H, F, R, and K are located in other exhibits. Each letter has something fun I can play with. I should not climb on the letters. I can tell my own story using this Storywall.

11 Airways has lots of tubes connected to the wall. Air blows through them. I may not like the sound. I can put scarves into Airways. When I do, air will blow onto my face. My hair may move around. I can let go of the scarf and watch it move through the tubes. I can change the way the air blows through the tubes and watch what happens to the scarves inside when I do this.

12 In the Veterinary Clinic I can pretend to take care of stuffed animals. There are doctor s coats, pretend food, and tools that veterinarians use to care for animals. In the Art Studio I can create something. There might be different materials every time I visit.

13 In the Grocery Store I can shop for pretend food. I can also pretend to be a grocery store worker. My job may be to serve ice cream, prepare sweets and bread in the bakery, or run the check out. If I would like, I can wear a special apron.

14 In the Doughnut Factory I can place plastic doughnuts in one side, then turn many different wheels to move the doughnuts to the other side. If I would like to, I can put the plastic doughnuts into special boxes or pretend to drive the delivery truck. I can also wear a special apron. When the doughnuts drop down the chute, I may not like the noise.

15 I have learned many things about the Children s Museum of Winston-Salem. I will have fun when I visit! I will remember to follow the rules when I am there. I will stay with my grownup. I will use my walking feet. I will take turns with other children. I will tidy up the toys I use after I play with them.
