2 The Lesson: Matthew 4:1-11 Open with the Lord's Prayer Today in the gospel lesson, we read about something really important Jesus did for you. You see, after Jesus was Baptized, the Bible said the Holy Spirit led Him out into the wilderness where He was tempted by the Devil. What does it mean when someone TEMPTS someone else? It means the person says things, makes promises or even gives gifts to another person, in order to get that person to say or do something. It's like saying "I'll give you some candy if you break your favorite toy!" In the Bible lesson, though, Satan tried three times to tempt Jesus into worshipping him. First He knew that Jesus was really hungry, so he told Jesus to "turn the stones into bread". Jesus does not do what the Devil tells Him to do, rather we don't live just to eat food, but to hear and believe what God says. The next time the Devil tries to tempt Jesus, he takes Jesus to the top of the temple and says "Jump off here, because the Bible says angels will catch you." Do you guys think Jesus listened to the Devil? You're right. Jesus didn't listen. He told the Devil TRUE OR FALSE that we aren't supposed to say or do things to make God prove Himself to us. Last but not least, the Devil tried to tempt Jesus by taking him up so high in the sky, that Jesus could see all of the different countries on the earth. The Devil made his biggest promise yet! He told Jesus he would put Him in charge of everything if Jesus would worship and trust in the Devil. Of course, Jesus said no because as the Bible says, "You shall worship the Lord your God and serve Him only." This is a really wonderful thing we heard about today. You see, the Devil wasn't just trying to get one more person to follow him, he was trying to take something away from you and me. He was trying to take Jesus from us. He didn't want you to be saved. He didn't want you to know Jesus. He didn't want you to have hope and trust in Jesus. His plan didn't work, did it? Jesus stayed strong and faithful. He didn't worry about the promises of the Devil. We know that the promises of Jesus are WAY better. Jesus went into the wilderness to go camping. The Devil wanted to tempt Jesus. Jesus didn't listen to the Devil. The Devil just wanted just another follower, nothing else. The promises of Jesus are the best. Page 2 of 6
