1 Young Mums Worker Job Pack Thank you for expressing interest in this role. We are very excited about the challenge of engaging and supporting young mums in the Acocks Green, Tyseley and Yardley areas and look forward to employing someone who can take this work forwards. We are a small and independent charity run by local people, most of our funds come from small trust funds therefore we are able to be impartial and operate with the best interests of children and families at heart instead of meeting strict targets. In 2013 we set up our family centre in a small building conveniently located on the Warwick Road a short walk from the centre of Acocks Green, the Stockfield estate and the Yarnfield estate. Since then we have grown the number of families accessing our services and opened another building in Yardley as well as outreach into the centre of Acocks Green through or Village of Play initiate. Long term our aim is to have a network of family support workers working across east Birmingham offering befriending and encouragement to lonely and isolated parents. We are aware of the high number of single parent households in the ward and are sure there is a link to high levels of depression and anxiety. We believe that by engaging parents and opening up social networks we can reduce depression and reduce the burden on the NHS. Furthermore we know that 8% of households with dependent children have no one in work this is nearly double the national average. We are sure that by raising parents confidence and aspirations we can reduce this figure creating a brighter future for our children. This post is the first step on the journey as we trial our theories working specifically with young mums. Your input and experience will help to shape and model a far ranging package of support and services for the east Birmingham area we want to really give you the opportunity to develop and grow your experience so that together we can achieve a new way of working to help parents and children.

3 JOB TITLE: GRADE: HOURS: LOCATION: RESPONSIBLE TO: Young Mums Worker 7.20 per hour, 16 hours per week See below The Operations Manger. PERIOD OF CONTRACT: 1 st February th October 2016 PURPOSE OF THE JOB: To positively engage and support mothers aged years through one to one support work, group sessions and training MAIN DUTIES: To work in partnership with the Operations Manager, Senior Children and Families Worker, trustees and other members of the team to develop a strategy to engage and support young mums. To identify and work with key stakeholders including Health, Children s Centres, Council, Social Services etc to promote the services on offer and to gain referrals. To proactively seek out and engage between young mums in the Acocks Green / Tyseley and Yardley areas. This may be done through referrals or through direct approach. To be a first point of contact for clients / stakeholders via phone or To listen to the needs of young mums and report findings to the Operations Manager. To help at least 10 young mums to access services they may have struggled to access alone e.g. Nursery places, Statutory services etc To provide at least 10 young mums with up to 4 home / community visits to offer support and guidance. To organise and facilitate at least 4 social gatherings between April October 2016 for a group of at least 6 young mums. This may include trips, play sessions, beauty days etc. To organise and facilitate at least 4 skills / learning based workshops between April October 2016 for a group of at least 6 young mums. This may include healthy cooking, basic money management, parenting skills, etc
4 To work with the Operations Manager to organise and facilitate a Parents Voices group to meet at least 3 times between April October 2016 to plan and develop a funding bid to improve a public facility e.g. a local playground. To help at least 10 young mums to set clear 5 year plans including routes into employment, housing issues, healthy relationships, good parenting. Ensure that whilst working with parents children are provided with a range of appropriately organised and supervised activities To take responsibility for planning each session, and to monitor the effectiveness of the activities. To lead sessions and organising a range of activities appropriate to the needs of the women. When organising a session which requires the support of your colleagues ensure colleagues are properly deployed and are offering an appropriate level of support and range of activities. To ensure provisions are safe environments, that safety procedures are implemented. To submit half page monthly reports and advise Operations manager on numbers, issues, concern, successes. To contribute to, implement, and work within all the organisations policies. To attend training sessions as required. To administer first aid as appropriate. [Only if qualified] To maintain confidentiality when dealing with families and staff issues Any such other task as may be reasonably requested by the Trustees. Child Protection Awareness & Procedure General Administration including maintaining records including keeping a log of receipts. Location House of Play + Education has the use of two venues: The House of Play + Education 895 Warwick Road Acocks Green Birmingham B11 2ER The Living Hope Centre Unit 7 Swan Courtyard Yardley Birmingham B26 Other community venues can be sourced at cost if required. As this post is mainly community based it is imagined that the worker will work from home (for admin purposes only) and that the worker will spend at least half of their time in the community this may include home visits, walking the streets giving out leaflets, visiting service providers with a parent etc. Access to the internet can be provided from our Acocks Green venue at certain times when the building is not in use.
5 Person specification Young Mums Worker Key Criteria Essential Desirable How measured Qualifications and training Good standard of education to GCSE level. A relevant Level 2 qualification in Health and Social Care or experience of pastoral or counselling care Access to a car and a driving licence would make this job a lot easier Application Form Competence summary (knowledge, skills, abilities, experience) The ability to communicate effectively with parents and children, stakeholders and relevant practitioners. Practical experience of planning appropriate stimulating activities and opportunities for young mums Experience working with children or young people who have disabilities or additional requirements. Application Form Interview References the ability to enthuse, motivate and stimulate young mums. Ability to work on own initiative and prioritise tasks. Good interpersonal skills and the ability to relate well to children and young mums. Excellent organisational skills and the ability to work both independently and as a team member. Other requirements Willingness to attend and participate in any induction, training and team meetings determined by the Trustees A friendly,outgoing and confident personality Excellent communication skills and people skills

To hold or willing to undertake an enhanced DBS check and to have no convictions that would deem you unfit for a role working with vulnerable adults and children.
