(SECTION 1) Inspiration is a software program used as a graphic organizer. With it your students can make Venn diagrams, character maps and story webs. Open Inspiration. In the middle of the screen you will see the Main Idea oval ready for use (these ovals will be referred to as bubbles throughout the manual). Your first task in Inspiration will be to put together a quick concept map showing a main idea and four associated points. You will learn three different methods for adding links. Step 1: Click in the Main Idea box and type Weather. Step 2: Click on the Rapid Fire button on the toolbar, notice that you now have a red symbol in the Main Idea bubble type Tornados and press Enter. You should now have a bubble that links off of Weather. Click on the Rapid Fire button again to deactivate it. We will now see another way to add links. Step 3: Look on the toolbar and find the Create icon. Notice that as you mouse over the outer spokes they light up this indicates the direction your link will go from the point of origin. Click on the Main Idea bubble to select it (it should now have white boxes around it), click on one of the spokes on the Create icon, click in the new bubble that has been created and type in Hurricanes. Step 4: This is the third method for adding a link. Click in the empty space out to the side of the Main Idea bubble. Now click on one of the shapes on the Graphics toolbar along the left side of the screen (if it is not available press the F8 button and it will appear). You should now have a bubble that is not yet connected to the Main Idea. Type Lightning in that bubble. In order to connect floating bubbles you will need to do the following:
Make sure you have selected the bubble that will be the point of origin for the new Link line Click on the Link button on the toolbar Then click on the bubble you want the arrow to point to Step 5: Now create a fourth bubble using any of the above methods and type in Clouds. You should now have a basic concept map with a Main Idea (Weather) and four associated points (Tornados, Hurricanes, Lightning, and Clouds). Later we will learn how to format a web (font, background color, adding graphics, etc.). SAVE your concept map and name it WEATHER. ADDING NOTES Click one time on the Main Idea (Weather) bubble to select it. You know a bubble is selected if you see white squares at the corners. Click the Notes icon on the toolbar. A Notes pop-up window opens for you to type in your comments. Go ahead and type in a short comment regarding Weather and close the Notes window. Notice that now there is a small Notes icon on the top left corner of the bubble this indicates that a comment has been stored there. Type an appropriate comment to accompany each of the four links attached to the Main Idea. Go ahead and Save this concept map again with the Notes intact. USING OUTLINE VIEW This is a valuable study tool for your students as well a useful way to further demonstrate how thoughts and ideas are organized. Using the Weather concept map again, add a link or two to each of the sub-topics. For example you might want to link off of Hurricanes with How they are Named and When is Hurricane Season?
Click on Outline on the left side of the toolbar. You should now see your concept map in the form of an outline. Notice that in outline form the toolbar changes to allow you to edit the outline see also that the Notes that were added are now able to be viewed. To get back to the concept map select the Diagram button. (SECTION 2) FORMATTING A CONCEPT MAP Open the Weather concept map created in Section 1 (if not already open). Double click on a bubble, then click and drag over the text to highlight it. From the Format menu along the bottom of the screen make changes to the text size, style, etc. You can make these changes one bubble at a time OR you can click and drag over several bubbles to highlight them and make simultaneous changes. Right click in the empty space to the side of your concept map. Select Background Color and experiment with different options. Click on a bubble to highlight it. Then using the toolbar at the bottom of the screen use to tools for changing the inside color of the bubble, line color, text color, etc. Continue this until all desired changes have been made. Remember that you can highlight multiple bubbles for formatting purposes as described above. ADDING GRAPHICS Graphics can be used to enhance a concept map by adding them along the outside area or by replacing bubbles with actual symbols to illustrate the idea. Replacing an Inspiration bubble with a symbol is a simple process. Your only difficulty will be finding and selecting just the right symbol.
The Graphics Library (also referred to as the Symbol Palette) toolbar is located on the left side of the screen if it is not available press the F8 key on your keyboard and it will appear. The three black arrows at the top of the Graphics Library will help you find what you are looking for. The center arrow reveals the different categories of graphics if you are looking for something in particular you can select the subject area here. The arrows pointing to the left and right take you through the different libraries one at a time. Take a few minutes to familiarize yourself with what is available. In the Science category you will find a section of Weather graphics select this library so it is available for use. On the Weather concept map click on the Main Idea (Weather) to highlight it. On the Graphics toolbar select a picture and click on it your Main Idea bubble will be replaced with that picture. Find graphics to go along with other portions of your concept map and experiment with replacing bubbles as well as inserting them into the background (simply click on the space you wish the picture to be placed and then click on the actual graphic). CREATING A HEADING Using the toolbar located at the bottom of the screen insert a Text Box to be used for a heading. Experiment with changing the text color, etc. so that it matches the formatting you have already used on your concept map. USING WHAT YOU HAVE LEARNED Now that you have learned the basics for creating and formatting a concept map in Inspiration, take what you have learned and create one that will work in your classroom.
Your Inspiration web should include the following: Main Idea and at least 4 sub-topics Notes on each sub-topic At least one hyperlink per sub-topic A minimum of 3 links attached to each sub-topic Background color Changes in Font including size, style, and color A heading Graphics that pertain to your topic (demonstrate an understanding of how to replace bubbles with graphics and how to insert graphics into the background)
