About Brook Brook helps young people to make informed, active choices about their personal and sexual relationships so they can enjoy their sexuality without harm. Brook services provide free and confidential sexual health information, contraception, pregnancy testing, advice and counselling, testing and treatment for sexually transmitted infections and outreach and education work, reaching over 290,000 young people every year. Becoming a Bigger, bolder, better Brook Until 2011 Brook operated as a network of independent charities but we have now merged into a group of 17 subsidiary charities under a parent company. There are 13 centres in England and one each in Northern Ireland, Scotland and Jersey. We employ over 600 staff across the UK. 3 We have three key business areas; Clinical and support services including provision of contraception, testing and treatment for sexually transmitted infections and counseling. Education and training this is rights based and needs led. Education is provided for young people and training for professionals. Campaigning, lobbying and advocacy to educate and influence young people, parents and carers, professionals, parliamentarians and other decision makers. The following weblink shows the areas that we cover The Ask Brook helpline is also available to all young people under 25 and provides a free and confidential telephone helpline , text information service and secure online enquiry service via Education For Choice Education For Choice (EFC) is a project of Brook and supports young people s right to informed choice on abortion by: delivering workshops for young people; providing evidence-based information and resources; and training health and education professionals. EFC calls for all young people to get accurate information and good quality education about abortion, and impartial support with pregnancy decision-making whoever they are, whoever they ask and wherever they go. Find out more at: Campaigns Brook campaigns for sex and relationships education (SRE) to be fit for the 21 st century through our Sex:Positive campaign. We know that young people want SRE that is relevant to their lives, focuses on relationships as well as sex, is honest about human sexuality and taught by professionals who are well prepared and confident. You can find out more about the campaign at In partnership with FPA we also run the XES We Can t Go backwards campaign, launched in response to reports of restrictions to contraception and sexual health services across the UK. 4 Resources for professionals Brook produces a range of widely used and respected publications to inform work and understanding of sexual health and sex and relationships education for use by nurses, GPs, teachers, parents, youth workers and young people themselves on a broad range of sexual health issues. The tool is available online at a PDF version can also be downloaded and it is also supported by training and consultancy packages from Brook trainers across the country. Brook provides, education and training in: Condom distribution Chlamydia screening Sexual exploitation Boys and young men Sexual bullying Abortion: decisions and dilemmas Sexual health for people with a learning disability Supporting young people to safely navigate risk Confidentiality, the law, negotiation and consent Building self esteem and managing relationships. 6 Role Specification Receptionist Post: Receptionist Ref: SAL480 Reports to: Service Coordinator Location: Salford Hours: 6 hours per week. Monday Salary: 14,437 per annum pro rata Key accountabilities To provide reception, referral, and information to clients in a flexible, respectful and non-judgemental manner, including referring to others, and answering queries; keeping up-to-date records and files; using IT systems and word-processing as appropriate. Responsibilities o Assist with creating an appropriate atmosphere to enable clients to feel at ease using Brook services o Register clients ensuring that personal details, reason for visit, referral and action taken are accurately recorded using appropriate Brook procedures and database systems o Refer clients to members of the clinical team, make follow-up appointments and signpost externally as necessary o Give non-clinical information and advice to young people who may attend for information on sexual health or related issues including condom teaching in accordance with Brook policies o Arrive in good time to start the session promptly and remain on the premises until all clients have been seen and/or the session has finished o Undertake reception and administration duties including greeting clients, taking telephone calls, filing, database input, faxing referral letters, secure storage of confidential information Receptionist - Recruitment Information March 14 6
7 o Ensure that client files, leaflets, supplies and paperwork are available and in order. Adhere to confidentiality procedures at all times. infection control and health and safety guidelines o Assist with the induction, training and supporting of new Receptionists and CSW staff in liaison with the Centre Manager o Work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team to meet the needs of young people o Facilitate the safe storage, movement and dispensing of supplies according to agreed procedures and pathways. Adhere to infection control and health and safety guidelines o Keep up-to-date with sexual health issues, current legislation involving young people and Brook guidelines and information o Participate in education, marketing and promotional activities for Brook as requested. o Attend internal staff and supervision meetings. 8 Person specification The successful applicant will have the following experience; Essential Able to provide support and cover when required Supports the aims and work of Brook Centres Maintains strict confidentiality concerning all Brook matters Educated to GCSE standard Previous receptionist or administrative experience Experience of customer service Experience of telephone work Experience of record keeping Ability to work both independently and co-operatively as part of a multi-disciplinary team Good written and verbal communication skills Understanding of the communication skills required to work with a diverse client group including those with complex needs that can include disability and communication difficulties Excellent customer service skills.
