1 Series B May 2007 Florida Staff Salaries of Selected Positions Salaries for employees are the major operational expenditure for school districts. This statistical brief presents average salary information for full-time district employees for the school year in 47 positions common across the districts. Positions for which average salaries are presented include: 1) superintendents, school board members and other district-level administrative persons (e.g., directors, coordinators), 2) school-level administrators (e.g., principals), 3) instructional staff (e.g., guidance counselors, teachers), and 4) support and technical staff (e.g., secretaries, bus drivers, teacher aides, mechanics). This brief does not incorporate the salaries for all district employees. Salaries contained herein are averages for those persons actually employed full-time in each district and are necessarily affected by the number of years of experience of those persons. Thus, caution should be used when analyzing and comparing district-to-district or district-to-state average salaries. Although most employees are hired for 12 months each year, others work fewer months. Table 1 shows a comparison of statewide average salaries for and for selected positions. Table 2 displays average salaries for selected district-level administrative staff. Tables 3 through 5 show jobs for which the number of months worked varies from district to district. The salaries of the employees who work fewer than 12 months were not adjusted to equate to 12-month salaries. Teacher salaries, presented in Table 4, represent the average salaries of those professionals paid on the instructional salary schedule negotiated by a Florida school district. This salary represents not only classroom teachers but also other certificated instructional staff such as school librarians. Additional information relating to teacher salaries is contained in a separate statistical brief, "Teacher, Experience, and Degree Level." Cautionary Note In Florida, each public school district, after collective bargaining activities, adopts a salary schedule for instructional personnel in that district. In some school districts, a salary schedule for the school year is negotiated and adopted after the collection of salary data for that school year by the Department of Education (DOE). In many of these districts, the final negotiated salary schedule provides retroactive pay to instructional personnel for the entire school year. When this happens, the salary information on the DOE Staff Database does not reflect the subsequent salary increase for that district. Users of staff salary data are advised to be aware of this and other factors affecting the data when making judgements and drawing conclusions based on these data.
