1 PhD in DESIGN - 32nd cycle Number of scholarship offered Department 6 DIPARTIMENTO DI DESIGN Description of the PhD Programme Description of the PhD Programme Detailed information on research proposals to be developed for Ph.D application is available at: The PhD Programme in Design prepares designer-researchers who, addressing the problems and opportunities of contemporary society, know how to produce original knowledge in design. The curriculum lasts three years, during which periods of both training and research activities are provided. The Programme develops design and analytical abilities, adopts various research methodologies and promotes a collaborative disposition. Most of research is delivered by research groups, which also contribute to the teaching activities undertaken by the School of Design. The PhD Programme hosts research projects that pertain to the research topics addressed in all Departments involved. The list can be consulted at From the beginning candidates become effective members of a research group, within which they develop an original research project (PhD thesis); this activity is the fundamental core of the learning process. Parallel to this main activity, candidates are involved in several other educational processes, divided into common and specialised activities. Proposing department: Department of Design. Scholarships In this PhD Programme the description of Departmental scholarships is defined on page 2 of this document. For specific research subjects, further increments can be defined by the proposing research group (see the additional subjects forms in the following pages describing the topics and scholarships for each subject). All candidates will be admitted with the basic departmental scholarships, and the specific research subject will be assigned, with the agreement of the candidate and the Board of Professors of the PhD Programme, within the first months of the PhD activity.the positions and scholarships available may be increased up to completion of all evaluations. Motivation and objectives of the research in this field Context of the research activity The general aim is to develop interactions among the different design cultures in order to enhance innovative strategies in representation sciences, communication, cultural heritage and landscape identity, advanced design. The concurrence of different scientific competences is grounded in the humanities centered approach, that provides a shared platform for research in the fields of material and immaterial cultural heritage, museography and exhibit design; product and interaction design; visual design with reference to both traditional technology and digital and multimedia systems; representation methodologies oriented to the project of handmade artifacts. Methods and techniques that will be developed and used to carry out the research Different methodologies (critical historic research, experimental/techonological approach; actionresearch; metadesign; critical analysis of representation languages; interdisciplinary team; case study and scenario design) are being used to foster research in the various fields of design linked to humanities. All the issues will deal with the use of innovative technologies as an answer to new needs of post industrial societies. Educational objectives The designer-researcher In Design&Cultures is a flexible professional figure, specialized in managing complex projects for communication; skills and abilities in the field of representation; advanced use of 1 / 2

Job opportunities In today complex and multicultural society, new opportunities are available for jobs addressing new needs of identity, human centered innovation and social challenges in the design-oriented cultural heritage. Motivation and objectives of the research in this field Context of the research activity The research activity of the Department section Product, Strategies and Services intends design as a continuum made by tangible products, ervices and communication interfaces fine-tuned with the evolution of society. The main goals consist of: - Exploring research fields where design is applied at different scales and complexity degrees to people, organizations, communities and other social entities; - Investigating actual phenomena and exploring on the edge research issues able to anticipate new scenarios related to the role of design in promoting new consumption patterns and new ways to create companies and social communities; - Understanding and design new ways to conceive the meaning and the use of innovative technologies (related to products, process and communication) connected to emerging user behavior and socio-cultural models. Methods and techniques that will be developed and used to carry out the research Design tools and strategies for the creative management of new products, services and systems, in integrated form. Service design approaches and methods. Strategic design and project management, knowledge of the production chain, storytelling. The overall aim is to encourage a multidisciplinary integration and to facilitate human-centered and participated design processes. Educational objectives The candidate will learn how to merge the 1 / 3

The learning process will be based on theoretical studies linked with practical activities to enhance the capacities and skills necessary to act also as a design practitioner. The final aim is forming researchers with specific attitude in exploring and designing forms of innovation able to generate value for society, economy and environment. Motivation and objectives of the research in this field Context of the research activity Research about the role of: Interiors and Contemporary Urban Environment, Arts and design, Contemporary Museology, Urban landscape, Mobility, systems and services,in the processes of refunctionalization of the city in the age of globalization. Methods and techniques that will be developed and used to carry out the research International enquiry about the transformations in the field of design related to the interior and contemporary urban environments, landscape and mobility. Development of the individual design skills. Educational objectives Training of designers able to face the innovation processes both technical and expressive at international level and to generate new values for society and its environments. Job opportunities Collaborations and internships with design studios and companies involved in the solution of new challangies in the field of interior design and urban space design. Specific topics can be: retail spacies, housing, offices, museums, from tertiary to museum, as well as the design of landscape and mobility services. Motivation and objectives of the research in this field Context of the research activity Digital technologies are rapidly evolving, and allow the development of innovative services, supporting users in a number of daily activities. Ubiquitous computing and new wearable devices should be employed to design smart systems and environments, and to improve customer satisfaction. In order to define convenient and sustainable scenarios, design innovative services and technology based solutions, and to make them acceptable and appealing, the technological research must be accompanied and oriented by the study of human needs and attitudes so to optimize the innovative solutions with respect to the user experience. The research will focus on the design of smart spaces, included those dedicated to retail services. Methods and techniques that will be developed and used to carry out the research Ethnographic analysis aimed at understanding users needs and attitudes with respect to wearable devices, smart spaces, internet of things. User centered design methodologies for the design of digital devices, systems and services. Creation of prototypes and interactive mockup. Testing activities based on qualitative and quantitative methodologies. Educational objectives The education aims at providing theoretical and experimental based insights about conscious and non conscious mental processes associated to human activities supported by digital devices and services; furthermore, it focuses on interaction design methodologies for innovation.
