1 ATTENDANCE AND PUNCTUALITY Aims: To recognise that good time keeping and attendance at school is a key requirement for good progress in learning. To maintain effective systems and procedures for encouraging regular school attendance. To investigate any underlying causes for poor attendance. To inform parents in order that they may cooperate with the systems and procedures of the policy. The Deputy Headteacher is responsible for the operational management of the attendance policy. The Leadership Team and all teaching staff will work to raise levels of enjoyment and commitment to learning. Registering pupils and categorising absence The rules and regulations for recording pupils attendance can be found in the front of class registers. The appropriate symbols for recording any absence are also located in the front of registers. Woodfield use the OMR Registration Sheets and Absence Sheets and staff fill them in in pencil. All registers are printed in alphabetical order. The gates open at 8.30 am and the school day begins at 8.45 am. Registers are taken at 8.45 am and must be closed by 9.05 am in the morning session and 1.45 pm in the afternoon. It is vital that all children attend the registration room. The school day ends at 3.15 pm. Monitoring attendance Persistent lateness should be notified to the office staff who will issue a letter to parents stressing the importance of good time keeping and regular attendance. Children who arrive at school after the gates have been locked will need to use the main entrance and be registered in the Late Book. Parents are expected to telephone the school or personally inform the office on the first morning of absence then inform the class teacher by letter to confirm the reason for absence on the child s return to school. This will enable the correct code to be allocated to the absence. By contacting the school the parent is indicating that they are aware of the child s absence and that the child is safe. The class teacher will retain all letters regarding absence in the back of the register. Registers are stored in school for a period of five years once completed. Absence letters are stored for a period of two years. If the school is not informed of the reason for absence, a standard letter will be sent from the office requesting the reason. Authorised absence is where the school has given permission for a child to be away or has accepted an explanation offered afterwards. If an unsatisfactory reason is given for an absence (for example, shopping) the child is recorded as having an unauthorised absence. This is pointed out to the parent where possible. The school will make every effort to address attendance problems and will work closely with the Educational Welfare Officer (Julie Davis) where there is persistent lateness or absence.
2 Attendance problems are often the result of some underlying cause so the pupil will investigate whether there are any school or home factors (or both) that are affecting the pupil s school attendance. Holiday leave Parents/carers considering holidays or other absences during school time should first discuss the implications with the Deputy Headteacher before making any commitments, especially if the absence is of lengthy duration. If extended absence for a period longer than two weeks during term time is planned, parents/carers must explain why they think it necessary for their child/children to be away for a period of more than two weeks: 1. The nature and purpose of the visit 2. The length of the absence and its impact on the child/children s education, particularly in terms of continuity of learning 3. The place or other country being visited and whether absence is seen as a rare event in the child/children s school career Parents/carers should also consider whether the timing of the proposed visit is at the most appropriate time of year and at the least disruptive point in the child s school career. The Headteacher or Deputy may not grant any leave of absence during term time unless they deem it to be exceptional circumstances. Only the Headteacher or Deputy at Woodfield has the discretion to authorise leave and this will be considered on an individual basis. The Headteacher or Deputy will determine the number of school days a child can be away from school if the leave is granted. Parents/carers cannot demand a leave of absence as an automatic right. Parents can be fined for taking their children on holiday during term time without the consent of the school. On occasions when the school has not been notified of a holiday the EWO will be notified. A child would normally be removed from the register after 20 days, unless the EWO is aware of extenuating circumstances. Maintaining good attendance Letters can be translated upon request or parents may approach the appropriate members of staff for a verbal translation. Registers will be analysed on a weekly basis to identify any trends for individual pupils, classes or year groups. The school aims to achieve and celebrate success in terms of good attendance. Praise, Certificates and Rewards will take place daily, weekly, half termly, termly and yearly for individual attendance. A weekly certificate will be issued to the class with the highest attendance. At the end of the school year those children who have achieved 100% attendance will be awarded a special prize/reward in recognition of their success. Attendance % Attendance %
3 Attendance target % Attendance at Woodfield needs to continue to improve in order to eventually achieve 94.5% + BEHAVIOUR This policy deals with the expectations of behaviour at Woodfield Academy, the support to help children develop and maintain those desired behaviours and the consequences should behaviour fall below our expectations. Woodfield Academy encourages positive attitudes towards behaviour.modelling from staff and pupils in all areas of school life sets a good example. ATTENDANCE LEARNINGBEHAVIOURACHIEVEMENT The Behaviour policy has three main objectives: 1. To create a structure which is understood by all and promotes consistent approaches, for the pupils to take ownership. 2. To have positive strategies to promote good behaviour 3. To create a clear structure of sanctions to respond effectively to inappropriate or unacceptable behaviour. There is a flowchart chain of responsibility but ultimately it starts with the form teacher with serious matters filtering to the Assistant Head > Deputy>Headteacher. Policy Aims Promotes an ) A a sense of self discipline orderly community ) C controlling our own actions and words where learning takes ) E ensure respect for property and people place Expectations Think, learn and care are all key words plus our mission statement and school aims to endeavour to promote positive attitudes towards self, others, property and the environment. Pupils are expected:- To show good manners Think of others Behave in a manner that promotes their safety and that of others Try and show respect at all times to adults in and out of school To understand the school systems for rewards and sanctions To accept that each child has a right to an education free from disruption or distress To provide a safe and secure environment for everyone to prosper Ethos and Morals Woodfield will endeavour to protect and promote established moral values. We will seek to counter any negative images of race, religious belief, disability, gender and homophobia. Physical Restraint
4 The use of physical restraint is not part of the disciplinary/class management process it is an emergency response, albeit a considered one, to an exceptional situation. Restraint must be justified. Any use of physical restraint must be recorded Further guidance Worcestershire County Council Guidelines for school staff in case of Physical Restraint.
