1 Aim (What you want the students to learn): Jesus founded the Church on earth, and entrusted her to the care and work of the Apostles. Peter was the first pope and the head of the Church on earth and all the bishops. The Church is made up of various members. Material Succession of Popes poster. As Catholics there are many ways we can live out our lives following you. Today help us learn more about the various roles in our Church. Begin/Opening Activity/Question/Story/The Attention Getter(1-5 minutes) Pg 14 Pass around pictures of the following: pope, a bishop, a priest, a nun, martyr, a saint of choice, and parents (laity) Optional: Start the class off with child dressing as the Pope: (White costume, white beanie ) Also have the real picture of the pope Bishop: (Red costume, red beanie, miter) Also, a real picture of a bishop Priest: (Black costume, white collar) Also, a real picture of a priest Nun: (Black costume, white veil) Also, a real picture of a nun Martyr: (Choose a martyr, if died from a sword, include this as part of the costume) Also, the picture of the actual saint Saint: (Choose a saint of your choice) Also, include the picture of the actual saint Parents: (Choose two students, have them holding a baby doll) Laity Develop/ Explanation /Activity Read pages in the student text The Pope Ask the children Who founded the Church. Tell them that Jesus founded the Church. Ask them Who give life to the Church. Tell them that the Holy Spirit gives life to the Church. Who guides the Church as the Vicar of Christ on earth? The Pope. Who was the first Pope? Saint Peter.

2 Who is the Pope now? Show that he is the successor of Peter by following the line of succession. What jobs does the Pope have? He must proclaim the truth in matters of faith and morals, which means he must uphold what we believe as Catholics. This is very important today, when not everything we must face is in the Bible. For example, human cloning is not in the Bible, but the Pope, who speaks on behalf of the Church, says that it is wrong. The Pope is infallible (protected from teaching error) when he teaches on matters of faith and morals. Show the students a poster of the succession of popes, pointing out Peter as the first pope and Pope Benedict as our current pope. 12 Apostles, the first Bishops Hold up a picture of the twelve Apostles. Point out Judas, the one who betrayed Jesus. (See attached pictures at the end of the lesson.) Next, point out Saint Peter, who was the first Pope. He acted as Jesus representative on earth. All Popes are successors of Saint Peter. All the other Apostles were bishops. Even today the Pope is a bishop. He is the Bishop of Rome and the leader of the bishops. From the Apostles all bishops can trace their ordinations. The Bishop A bishop is an apostle. He teaches, preaches to, and guides all the people in his diocese. He protects them from error. He is a good shepherd, like Jesus. Bishops must work with the Pope. Together they teach the truths of the Church. Sometimes all the bishops of the world meet with the Pope in an ecumenical council. During these councils they discuss things of importance for the whole Church. They must only teach what the Pope agrees with, though, because the Pope is the head of the Church. The Pope is a bishop. He is bishop of the Diocese of Rome. Point to Rome on a map and show the children how far it is from your diocese. Show the photo of our current bishop. (See attachment at the end of lesson. Since this lesson was made during a time of transition, a photo of Bishop Vasa was included to show the students what a bishop looks like and then one of our Bishop Elect, Fr. Liam Cary. ) Various Roles of Different People in the Church Explain the various roles of different people in the Church: Priests: Priests help the bishops. Remember that the bishop is responsible for all the churches in his diocese. But he cannot be everywhere at once, so the priests act in his place to help him. Diocesan priests make vows of obedience to their bishop to be sure they do his work in the parish. Priests bring us the Sacraments of Baptism, Penance, Eucharist, Matrimony, and the Anointing of the Sick. Sometimes they bring us the Sacrament of Confirmation. They can never administer Holy Orders (only the Bishop can). The priests are assigned to a parish and work in a specific neighborhood. You can trace your parish boundaries on a map. Religious Brothers and Sisters: These are people called by God to serve the Church. They are lay men and women who have consecrated their lives to God. They spend their lives helping others, praying and being witnesses to the Gospel in anticipation of Heaven. They often take vows of poverty, chastity

3 (they will not marry anyone), and obedience. They are members of various religious congregations, which tend to different needs in the Church. Laity: These are all the other members of the Church. They live their lives either as single or married people. They bring the Gospel to the world through their work and their families. Martyrs: Those who are called to lay down their lives to witness to the truth of the Gospels are martyrs. Saints: Those souls who are already in Heaven are saints. They lived good lives on earth and now enjoy their just reward. Holy Souls in Purgatory: Those who await Heaven while in a state of purification are the holy souls in Purgatory. Church as the Mystical Body of Christ Analyze the model of the Church as the Mystical Body of Christ. Read the following passage from a children s Bible: 1 Cor 12:1-31. Who is the head of the body? Christ. What are the parts of the body? Can they imagine a body with 10 left feet? What about one with one hundred eyes but no mouth? Would not that be crazy? Everybody has a different role in the Mystical Body of Christ: o Apostles Prophets o Teachers Workers of miracles o Healers Helpers o Administrators Those who speak in tongues o Membership of the Church The Church is made up of 3 Members: Is the Church made up of only those people we see here on earth? No. The people here on earth are called the Church Militant because we are fighting the good fight to get to Heaven. What about the people in Heaven? Are they part of the Church, too? Yes. They are the Church Triumphant because they are enjoying their just reward. What about the souls in Purgatory? They are the Church Suffering. They will go to Heaven, but must first be purified. Explain the relationship between the people in Heaven, on earth, and in Purgatory. On earth we can also pray to the saints in Heaven. The souls in Purgatory are suffering and cannot pray for themselves, so we must help them with our prayers and sacrifices. The saints in Heaven can pray for us and intercede on our behalf before the throne of God. All souls are united in the Sacrifice of the Mass. Application: Have you ever thought that God might be calling you to a religious vocation? Pray that you will know and follow God s will in your life. Workbook

4 Choose one of the work book pages Have the students do them on their own and go over together in class. If time, have the students draw the steps needed to faithfully receive Jesus in the Eucharist. Assessment/Evaluation/ Review Game (1-10 minutes) Go over the CCC questions at the end of the chapter. Provide a quiz or do some sort of review of the material covered during class, especially the Aim (see above). Closing Prayer Homework: Send one workbook page home from Pg Lead the students into the chapel/church. Remind them that they are in the presence of God and need to be respectful and quite. If you have something you would like to tell a friend, save it for outside the chapel. Have the students practice genuflecting and making the sign of the cross before entering the pews. God, you entrust each of us with a role in our family and in our Church. Please let me know the way in which you want me to live my life for you. Thank you for giving us our families. And thank you for giving us the Pope and our priests and bishop to guide us to follow the plan you have for us. Today Lord I want to especially pray for our priest(s) Fr..
