6 Pre-AP/AP Program It s not just an Examination. It s not just a Course. It s a Program.

7 Responsibilities of AP Students A willingness to actively engage with sophisticated concepts. A willingness to be judged by rigorous, college-level standards. A willingness to complete longer and more complex nightly assignments. A willingness to complete the Advanced Placement Examination in May.

8 Level of Commitment Homework: Students will have homework in most Pre-AP/AP classes every day. Readings: Pre-AP/AP courses may require outside reading. Essays: To prepare for the national exam(s), AP students may be expected to write numerous essays in several classes. Grading: Because students will be graded as strictly as in college courses, Pre-AP and AP courses will be weighted 10 points for the purposes of grade point averages and class rankings. Textbooks: AP courses often require the use of college textbooks, and may, therefore, contain more mature subject matter.

9 Benefits of the AP Program Students who successfully pass the AP exam for a course can earn college credit while still in high school. Earning college credit through AP exams can save families a substantial amount of money and time while in college. AP Courses and AP exam scores are important to college admissions offices; colleges want to know that a student has attempted the most rigorous courses available while in high school. Research from College Board indicates that students who take AP courses and exams are much more likely to finish college in four years; students are better prepared for the rigor of collegiate academics.

10 Ap Program Information

11 Transcripts and Your GPA GPA = grade point average. Your student earns credits in high school and the grades they earn begin to average together to create a GPA. Students who take Pre-AP and AP courses get 10 points added into their GPA calculation. You can access your GPA and transcripts on Home Access Center. At this time your student would not have a transcript.

12 Virtual Learning Students have the option of selecting these courses if they are comfortable with receiving all of their coursework online. Teachers interact with students through and online office hours. Students must maintain their pacing in the class in order to receive the best possible grades. Students will have a class period in their schedule where they will be mentored by a Keller ISD teacher as they progress through the course.

16 Registration Materials Please note that students signing up for volleyball, football, basketball (girls and boys), soccer (girls and boys), baseball, softball, and wrestling will only sign up for 7 credits. CHOOSE ALTERNATE COURSES CAREFULLY!

17 Frequently Asked Questions Q: What if I don t have access to a computer, how can I register my student online? A: There will high school counselors at the middle school campuses during the week of February 6 th for open registration. During this time the high school counselors will be registering students in small groups. If your student is absent or needs to make changes and you do not have access to a computer there will be counselors on campus. The library computers are also available.

18 Frequently Asked Questions Q: Where can I find a course guide? A: Course guides are available online on the Keller ISD website.

19 Frequently Asked Questions Q: What if I miss the deadline to submit my course requests online? A: If you fail to submit your course selection online, courses will be chosen for you. You will be able to see this on your Home Access Center. The deadline for entering your courses online is February 17 th. But, you will be able to change your course requests IN WRITING until April 28 th.

20 Frequently Asked Questions Q: What if I get in an AP class and it is too hard, can I get out? A: Students are not able to request to get out of an AP class until after the second week of school. If a student wants to get out of an AP class at this time a SAVE meeting will be called. Level changes are not always granted when they are requested.

21 Frequently Asked Questions Q: When is the last day I can make changes to my schedule? A: The last day students will have access to enter changes into the computer is February 17th. After that students wishing to make changes to their course requests have until April 28 th requests changes to request changes. These changes must be submitted in writing.

22 Frequently Asked Questions Q: My student does not know what they want to do. Did they have to choose a pathway? Endorsement? A: Yes, It is best to prepare your students to start making some choices about their academics. If they change their mind, we will work with you yearly to make sure that your student is on track to graduate.

23 Frequently Asked Questions Q: Can my student choose classes outside of their endorsement? A: Absolutely, your student can choose classes outside of their endorsement. They will have the ability to register for 8 credits each year. However, they will be required to meet the expectations of their chosen endorsement.

24 Frequently Asked Questions Q: Will a student be stuck with a track all four years if they change their mind? If not, what is the process for this and the effect on the student s schedule? A: Students will be able to revisit their endorsement choice yearly with their counselors. This will occur prior to registration each year. At that time, a student with parent permission could make a change. Many of the courses will overlap and not create scheduling problems. The counselors will be working to help the students stay on track.

25 Frequently Asked Questions Q: Will my student continue to have an advisory period built into their day? A: No, your student will have 8 classes with a lunch in their schedule. They will have the opportunity to attend tutorials before and after school if needed.

26 Frequently Asked Questions Q: It looks like my student is going to be very involved in school. I am worried about possible overload. A: High School is definitely more challenging than middle. This will be a time where choices will have to be made. Students will need to use time management and study skills strategies. If it gets too overwhelming, the counselor is definitely a resource.

27 Frequently Asked Questions Q: How many credits do I need to be classified as a sophomore? A: Students need 6 credits to be a sophomore. Each year students have the opportunity to earn 8 credits.

28 Frequently Asked Questions Q: Where can I find more information about my student s graduation requirements? A: Click on the igraduate icon on the Keller ISD website.
