2 HISTORICAL NOTE This is a collection of biographies for many of the pioneer settlers of Tempe, Arizona Territory. Each folder contains the name of a settler(s) with a biography of his/her life, a photocopy of the biography, and photos. Many of these pioneers were buried in Double Butte Cemetery, known as Tempe s Arlington since many early prominent citizens are buried there. The Old Settlers Picnic was started in the fall of 1902 at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Niels Petersen, early settlers of Tempe, Az. Officers were elected and the picnic was held annually for all Arizona pioneers. The biographies in this collection were written to tell the history of each pioneer. A few of the biographies were dated, written in 1939 and Most of the settlers in this collection arrived in Tempe during the 1870s through the 1890s. The earliest settler arrived in SCOPE AND CONTENT This collection contains 91 folders in two boxes of early settlers of Tempe, Arizona Territory. The folders are alphabetized using the last names of the individuals. They contain short biographies and photographs of the individuals. Box three contains the cover from a box titled Photos and History of The Old Settlers of Tempe Association. PROVENANCE This collection was created within the Arizona Historical Society library archives using pre-existing materials, possibly donated by the Old Settlers of Tempe Association, to document the pioneer settlers of the city of Tempe, Arizona. RESTRICTIONS None LITERARY RIGHTS STATEMENT Permission to publish material from the Tempe Settlers Collection must be obtained from the Library and Archives Department at the Central Arizona Division of the Arizona Historical Society.
